Cedric Benson WAIVED by the Bears (1 Viewer)

Bears send home Benson, later release troubled running back

ESPN.com news services

Updated: June 9, 2008, 5:04 PM ET

Cedric Benson's time with the Chicago Bears is up.

The troubled running back, whose relationship with the team soured further because of his second arrest in little more than a month Saturday, was waived by the team on Monday, sources told ESPN.com's John Clayton.

Before his release, Benson made one last ditch effort to repair the situation, issuing an apology on Monday afternoon.

"I apologize for making the poor decision to drink and drive during the early morning of Saturday, June 7th," he said in a statement. "Given the incident last month, it was a particularly bad decision. I have no excuse for this lack of judgment.

Though I strongly believe that I am not guilty of any crime, I realize that the public and the Bears organization hold me to higher standard. Though my local attorneys will continue to work hard to prove my innocence, I confess to using poor judgment. Please accept my deepest apology."

The Bears released the running back shortly thereafter. The Chicago Sun-Times reported on its Web site earlier in the day that Benson showed up at Monday's OTA and was sent home by coach Lovie Smith.

"I know that he went to practice today and Lovie told him to go home," Benson's attorney Sam Bassett said before the release, according to the newspaper. "I don't know if it's because of the publicity or because it's a distraction, or if the Bears are trying to decide what to do. He's just kind of waiting to see what they tell him and what they are going to require of him.

"His agent and business manager are doing some stuff with the Bears that I am not privy to. He knows the Bears may release him. He hopes they don't. He knows he screwed up."

Benson was arrested on a drunken driving charge in Austin, Texas, early Saturday and Bears officials said they would treat the matter seriously. Benson's attorney said the former Texas star had a few drinks with dinner but didn't think he was intoxicated and cooperated with police.

The arrest comes a month after Benson was charged in Austin with boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest. He has said neither charge is true, and those cases are pending.

At a fan event at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday, Angelo said he hadn't spoken to Benson but called the most recent situation unfortunate.

"Disappointment is too much an often-used word when we're talking about Cedric, and the number one lesson for every player is protect your job," Angelo said. "So we're all held accountable for our actions."

I've heard he was sent home...but still have not found one credible source that states he was released yet.

And ESPN is NOT CREDIBLE, they are probably just throwing this out there in hopes it comes true.

Show me when Shecter/Shefter (sp?) from NFL Network says it's happened and I'll believe it.

ETA: If this proves true...Hello Mr. Kevin Jones, you have a call waiting on line 1.

Anyone else chuckle by his admitting to drinking and driving and then saying he honestly believes he's not guilty of any crime? :goodposting:

Waste of a first round pick. I think not only does Forte's value go up, but Adrian Peterson looked o.k., and Wolfe has some potential.

Guy is a freaking idiot. Move over Curtis and Rashaan. Man, we simply can not draft a good running back in the first round.

Peterson is what he is and nothing more. HE's a sold special teamer and a third-down back. We need to sign one of the FAs. Anyone know how much the bears have in cap room and what the hit is from cutting Benson?

That jumped out at me too. And his "attorneys will continue to work hard to prove my innocence. This guy just doesn't get it. If admitting that you have a problem is the first step to recovery, this guy just doesn't have a shot at success in life, outside of the gridiron.

:lmao: That's a pretty solid crew of free agent RBs entering camp. Last year's free agent veteran RBs at this time were Corey Dillon and who? And Dillon never signed anywhere. This will definitely be interesting to see if, where and when these guys might wind up week one.

BEARS BID BUH-BYE TO BENSON

Posted by Mike Florio on June 9, 2008, 5:12 p.m.

After Bears running back Cedric Benson’s first arrest last month in Texas, coach Lovie Smith declared that Benson is still the starter.

He isn’t any more.

The Bears have released Benson. (Technically, he has been placed on waivers, since he has less than four years of NFL service.)

“Cedric displayed a pattern of behavior we will not tolerate,” General Manager Jerry Angelo said in a team-issued release. “As I said this past weekend, you have to protect your job. Everyone in this organization is held accountable for their actions. When individual priorities overshadow team goals, we suffer the consequences as a team. Those who fail to understand the importance of ‘team’ will not play for the Chicago Bears.”

Benson was the fourth overall pick in the 2005 draft, which now features four busts of Biblical proportion among the top ten selections: Benson; Pacman Jones (No. 6); Troy Williamson (No. 7); and Mike Williams (No. 10).

Some league insiders believed that the Bears would keep Benson around because his salary is relatively low and because running backs tend to get hurt.

The move could prompt the Bears to try to sign an available veteran, such as Shaun Alexander or Travis Henry.

It’ll be interesting to see whether anyone claims Benson on waivers. Somehow, we see the Buccaneers or the Cowboys in Benson’s future

I just wanna say that if Benson ends up being successful for some other team I'm going over to his house and botch-slapping his wasted ###.

It didn't used to be that way. Gale Sayers, Walter Payton, Neal Anderson were all first-round picks by the Bears. They drafted at least 1 good running back a decade from the 60-80's. The 90's and 00's have just been a failure. What happened since then?

I have no idea. But if you look at that draft class, it was like playing russian roulette with five bullets:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?season=2005

1 Alex Smith QB Utah San Francisco 49ers Bust

2 Ronnie Brown RB Auburn Miami Dolphins

3 Braylon Edwards WR Michigan Cleveland Browns

4 Cedric Benson RB Texas Chicago Bears Bust

5 Cadillac Williams RB Auburn Tampa Bay Buccaneers Bust

6 Pacman Jones CB West Virginia Tennessee Titans Bust

7 Troy Williamson WR South Carolina Minnesota Vikings Bust

8 Antrel Rolle DB Miami (Fla.) Arizona Cardinals Bust

9 Carlos Rogers DB Auburn Washington Redskins

10 Mike Williams WR USC Detroit Lions Bust

11 DeMarcus Ware OLB Troy State Dallas Cowboys

12 Shawne Merriman OLB Maryland San Diego Chargers

13 Jammal Brown T Oklahoma New Orleans Saints

14 Thomas Davis DB Georgia Carolina Panthers Bust

15 Derrick Johnson OLB Texas Kansas City Chiefs

16 Travis Johnson DT Florida State Houston Texans

17 David Pollack LB Georgia Cincinnati Bengals

18 Erasmus James DE Wisconsin Minnesota Vikings

19 Alex Barron T Florida State St. Louis Rams

20 Marcus Spears DE Louisiana State Dallas Cowboys

21 Matt Jones WR Arkansas Jacksonville Jaguars Bust

22 Mark Clayton WR Oklahoma Baltimore Ravens Bust

23 Fabian Washington CB Nebraska Oakland Raiders

24 Aaron Rodgers QB California Green Bay Packers

25 Jason Campbell QB Auburn Washington Redskins

26 Chris Spencer C Mississippi Seattle Seahawks

27 Roddy White WR Alabama-Birmingham Atlanta Falcons

28 Luis Castillo DE Northwestern San Diego Chargers

29 Marlin Jackson DB Michigan Indianapolis Colts

30 Heath Miller TE Virginia Pittsburgh Steelers

31 Mike Patterson DT USC Philadelphia Eagles

32 Logan Mankins G Fresno State New England Patriots

Six of the top ten were total busts and another three in the first round. This was just a really, really bad year to have a top-ten pick.

A few additions and corrections

17 David Pollack LB Georgia Cincinnati Bengals severe neck injury, forced to retire

18 Erasmus James DE Wisconsin Minnesota Vikings numerous knee injuries

20 Marcus Spears DE Louisiana State Dallas Cowboys maybe not a Bust, but not a boom either

A really great year for late first rounders though.

I think the Bears should take a shot with Travis Henry.

My BEARS UNDER 8 wins wager

is looking better and better.

I don't consider someone like Pollack, who suffered a career-ending injury, and someone like Ced or Pacman, who pissed it all away by being a criminal or #######, to be in the same class. But it's the same net result for the team that drafted them.

Later bum ;)Just one question: What happens to Benson_Will_Lead_The_Way now?
Benson can still lead the way. Lead the way to court. Lead the way to, if he's lucky, a tryout with another team. Lead the way to his couch for a year. Lead the way to the Commissioner's office to be suspended for 4 games for when a team actually does sign him. Lead the way to 3rd arrest. Lead the way to obscurity. And that's when BWLTW changes his nic to Forte_Will_Lead_The_Way.

Don't get me wrong. I don't either. That was the point I was trying to make, that the end result was the same. Pollack was a great player. It was a shame what happened to him.

Yeah, he was amazing at UGA. Definitely one of my favorite all-time bulldogs, but I always wondered about him in the pros. Really is too bad. I think he will make an amazing coach and I bet the doors are wide open for him at UGA to be a defensive-ends coach or a d-line coach. By far the best play of his career was when he recorded a sack, interception, and a TD all within about 1 second. That defense he was one was second to none.

:goodposting:

Told you 3 years ago this guy was a bum.

Where's Colin?

Do the Bears look at Henry? Do they pick up the phone and call the Raiders to see what it will take to trade for Jordan?

Something tells me that they will not sit pat with Forte, Peterson, and Wolfe.

Henry has a bit of a checkered past also. I really don't see how Angelo could go that route. I think it will be Jordan or KJ.

Alexander might work as well.

To me, Kevin Jones looks like the guy most likely to benefit from a change of scenery. The other guys are either broken down, have had chances at multiple teams, or both. Whats SA gonna do with this offense? He might be effective on a team that can spread the field with a legit passing threat, but he's not going anywhere against 8 man fronts all season and an o-line that may actually be worse than last year (if there is so much as 1 injury). You need a guy with some wiggle, and KJ might pull it off.

That would have been sufficient. I'm referring to the current regime alone, as the Bears have had some of the greatest RBs don their uniform... but Angelo and whoever else is working for him ... they just don't seem to know a thing about RBs.

I think KJ would be their first call. Word is he looks very good.

 KJ is the most logical fit.

Unbelievable. Ehh, maybe its a good thing for the team, as amazing as that might sound cutting the 4th damn pick in the draft just 4 yrs ago.
