Cedric Benson (1 Viewer)

The idea promoted in some corners that Cedric Benson was woefully behind in rehabilitating his broken left leg/ankle was off. Considerably. If running around in shorts and a helmet counts for much, and we know it doesn’t, Benson looked pretty good Wednesday in the Bears’ practice at Halas Hall.In fact, if Benson had not been wearing his No. 32 jersey, you might not have recognized him.“I’ve lost about 10 pounds,’’ he said. ``Alternating my diet a little bit, and I feel great. That stuff really works.”Some complained Benson was out of shape last season, something he always refuted, but he looks to be a new man and was in good spirits following the two-hour practice.“I feel faster, stronger, clearer, healthier,’’ he said. “I feel great.”As for if it is a make or break summer and season for the fourth pick of the 2005 draft?“I don’t know,” he said. “I haven’t really thought about that. But if it is, come on, make or break, I’m sure I’m going to make it happen.”
Sounds like a new man.

Do you mean it's the same boss who drafted Benson as the 4th pick in the 1st round?

memorial day weekend and the benson threads have begun.

He looked good in shorts and a helmet, please. let me know when he looks good breaking tackles through the middle.

Chicago will have one of the 5 worst offenses in football.

QB: Rex Grossman...definition of insaniy is to do the same thing again and again and expect different results. This guy has had ample chances. And they don't have anything behind him either...SCARY!!!

WR: Marty Booker is your WR1, Mark Bradley the WR2, rookie at WR3, Devin hester...c'mon this group is awful.

TE: Clark and Olsen are a nice combo.

OL: Horrific last time I peeked in on them.

There is a reason that no Chicago Bears players are being taken in the 1st 5-6 round sof the SSL Survivor drafts going on int he mock Draft Forum for anyone that hasn't gone over there(you should). They are pitiful and Lovie Smith is going to be looking for work after they go 3-13 this year.

It always scares me when a player adds or drops significant weight. I remember at the end of Faulk's career he added like 15 pounds of muscle and the company line was so he would be able to absorb more hits. Except that didn't help his knee to stay healthy. And then there are the players that drop weight in some sort of attempt to get faster or something. It just always seems to backfire.

10 pounds isn't a ton of weight, but it still concerns me. Does he plan on dropping more in TC? Will losing this weight make him faster? And more importantly, will it make the O-Line block better or bring Grossman's throws down to where his WR's (and not the secondary) can catch them...

:hot: without hester the bears would be in the running for the #1 pick next year. they may only win 2 games. green bay at home and green bay on the road.

1. No QB

2. No O-Line help this off-season

3. No Berrian or Moush to keep the defense honest

4. New #2 Bradley already has injury issues

5. Defense continues to age and will not be able to keep many games close.......no running game.

6. Benson has yet to do anything.

Doesn't look good for those are are going to take a flyer on this guy!!!!!!!

A large back loseing 10 pounds by eating healthier is a good thing. This isnt like Ricky Williams loseing over 30 pounds. Benson could gain the 10 pounds back in a week of bad diet. It appears to me that Benson lost some focus last year without competition. The drafting of Forte could be a good thing for Benson owners. He's focused again for now.

I still don't like it when players add or lose weight in the offseason. Yeah, 10 pounds on this chunk isn't much, but it always worries me...

I told ya...drafting Forte was just a ploy...
I have been a Bears fan for almost 30 years and go to games each year. There is no ploy here. I am not going to call Forte the next Sweetness. I am going to tell you Benson stinks and no amount of praise in shorts and a T is going to prove otherwise. The reality is this team took a turn for the worse faster than should be possible. Angelo is a genius at drafting D. He and Lovie are going to go down with the ship when it comes to Grossman and Benson.

The O-line was atrocious, and he ran like he was looking over his shoulder and with no confidence. The guy has tons of talent, and has fought the injury bug every year in the NFL along with bad advice his rookie year. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a top 5 back for the next 3 years, or out of the league within 3 years. If he gets focused, he could be special.

The guy for most of his career leading up to the NFL was the "Golden Child", and he hasn't handled adversity well since turning pro.

should be interesting

OK, this is getting a little out of hand...1. No QB-No debate here2. No O-Line help this off-season-Chris Williams will be ready to start from day 13. No Berrian or Moush to keep the defense honest-Neither one of these guys kept defenses honest. Our WR corps was improved mightily through the draft. Expect Bennett to start and Monk to be on the field a lot in 08. Even if you don't agree with that. you can't say that our WR corps has somehow gotten worse. Berrian was our only good receiver last year and I expect the guys we drafted to make up for him. Moose was cut for a reason. He sucks.4. New #2 Bradley already has injury issues-Bradley won't start. It will be Booker and either Lloyd or Bennett.5. Defense continues to age and will not be able to keep many games close.......no running game.-We made two important picks on the defensive side of the ball in Steltz and Harrison. Harris, Vasher, Anderson, Tillman and Briggs are all either approaching or at their prime. The only guys that are important to the defense that are getting past their prime are Urlacher and Mike Brown.6. Benson has yet to do anything.-Agreed

Mmmm.. hanging your hat on rookie WRs doesnt sound like a recipe for success. Certainly not instant improvement.

Williams will start from day 1, but that is a necesity, not a commentary on his readiness.

The real shame is that the Bears have had a pocket full of cap money they have done nothing with. This is idiotic- it practically begs the guys you already have under contract to ask for more. Hey, its just sitting there, right? If you're not paying for help you are claiming the guys you have are good enough, and its a short way to those guys assuming they deserve that money. Witness Gould and Urlacher. Now if the cubbard is bare in April because you spent on free agents, you just pull out your pockets and say sorry, nothing we can do for you this year.

Forte will be a huge improvement over Benson that is a certainty. Benson has been nothing short of a bust peroid.

Your title = oxymoron.

Benson's games last year = no speed, no vision, no good. That is the only thing that matters.

It boggles my mind as to why I continually see "Cedric Benson" threads in here. I don't understand. He's awful...period.

Reminds me of Ron Dayne...alot. Some backs simply can't play/produce in this league, at least not at the level to which they are expected to.

Forte couldn't have an easier road to travel to achieve "starter's status".

I owned Benson in one of my leagues and imagine my surprise when about 3 weeks ago I received an offer of Edge and Kevin Walter for Benson, Adrian Peterson(Bears), and Ted Ginn. My finger couldn't get to the accept button fast enough.

Not bad - Edge for Ginn.

Do you mean it's the same boss who drafted Benson as the 4th pick in the 1st round?
Isn't this analogous to talking about how good your first date was with a girl AFTER you forgot her birthday, got caught sleeping with her best friend and skipped her mother's funeral to go fishing?

Although I don't think they will be an offensive popwerhouse, I also don't think they will one of the worst 5 offenses. QB: The guy can be good, and he has shown it. He was just terribly inconsistent. With an improved OL and less pressure form the D (which is why he struggled mostly), he will be better. Tait has moved to his natural position on the right side which will help.WR: Not the best group of WRs, but did they ever have one? They will be OK for what they need to do, IF they all stay healthy. Chicago is a run-first team. I am not sure why everyone thinks this group is much worse than last year. Berrian was overrated. He was OK but not a star that many people on this board make him out to be. His loss was not monumental nor tragic.TE: Add them to the group of receivers and they already look better.OL: Peek on them again. Not the greatest but improved with Tait going back to the right side. They will not be great, but far from pitiful. And Lovie isn't going anywhere next year, even if they have a losing record. If they do, he's not the one leaving.

:X

Who could possibly be worse than them?

Chiefs? Jets? Dolphins? Falcons? Ravens?

There shouldn't be ANY doubt they are a bottom 5 offense in the NFL unless MAJOR strides are made.

Everyone has written Benson off, including me but at what point is he worth a draft pick. Is he a RB3 option? RB4? At some point in the draft this guy will represent some value, how far down is that?

I would gladly take him as a RB4. I guess that is pretty subjective to who all is on the board, but I would imagine he would be about the best at that point.

Am I the only person who have kept Benson/Ginn?

I've gotten him in a couple of survivor leagues. Even if I think he sucks, it's silly to pass on a "starter" in the 8th, 10th rounds, as RB37 or 45. (These are 16 team drafts...so 8th round=10/11th of a 12 teamer, 10th = 13th.)All too often, we label a guy as "sucks", and then fail to recognise when they become more then a little bit of a steal.

I agree although he's one of those guys who I hope is drafted earlier than I have him projected. I don't want him but at some point I'll feel he is good value. I'm going to hype him on our message board and try to get someone to take him out of the mix.

Starter??Ok on paper...for now. don't fool yourself. Forte will over take him in short order.
