Chain Saw recommendations (1 Viewer)

Snickers

Footballguy
I live on over 5 acres that is mostly wooded and have been taking down a lot of trees that are encroaching my lawn. I've been using a few older model Stihl's but they are requiring a lot of maintenance and slowing my work down.

I've done some reading and like what I've read about the Husqvarna 460 Rancher, anyone here have one?

Anyone have a saw they love?

TIA

I have an older Husqvarna that I bought in 95. Didn't get used a lot but didn't have many problems with it until I lent it out.

I still think Stihl is top of the line.

I have a Stihl MS260. I prefer to get top of the line and buy once. Big enough to take on most any job but not overboard.

About six or seven years ago we had a giant storm here knock down all bunch of trees. Instead of paying some company a few grand to get rid of them I went out and bought Stihl 391.

Starts every time and I have never once had a problem with it. It demolished oak and pine trees that were 4 and 5 feet in diameter. I consider this one of the best purchases I've ever made.

Thanks, that looks like a solid saw and right in line with what I was planning to shell out for the Husqvarna. I'd love to see a comparison of the two.

I used a Sears when I took down 24 trees to put my pool in. Took it back for a new one three times and then got my money back on the fourth. 16 trees down. Bought a ms 271 and took the rest down. Have used it quite a bit since then. No problems at all and shows there's a huge difference in quality out there.

Maybe as part of your decision-making process, you should look around your area for a place that you'd get it/go to for maintenance.

If, for example, there is a place near you that specializes in Stihl over Husky, that might sway you.

I have a place near me (10 minutes away) that carries both (in addition to most every type of small motor equipment to use) but the guys there thought Stihl was slightly better from a dependability perspective.

All that said, I would strongly suggest getting more saw than you think you need.

I have a Stihl 361 that I run a 20" bar on.  Great saw.

Ill also add A couple of other considerations...

1-Check to see if you have a local dealer near and if you get priority treatment. I bought mine at the local ACE hardware and while they service all brands, I get pushed to the front of the line with the other Stihl owners when I bring in one my stihl tools, which brings me to the next item...

2- Fuel mix ratio. I used to own a buncha different brand power tools which all used different fuel ratios. Now I only own Stihl products and I only have to keep one gas can filled.

Good advice although most repairs will be done by me and my FIL. Well, mostly my FIL although I try to shadow him whenever he is doing stuff so that eventually I can fix things on my own.

If you mean change the oil, chain and refuel, sure, but you'll want the pro's opening up your high end power tools when it comes time for service.

Hell if I'm letting the father of the girl I'm boning touch my chainsaw!! Obviously I'm kidding but you get the point.

Just my humble opinion, from a more than handy guy.

I have all Stihl stuff. My weed trimmer is over a decade old. I'm clearly biased, but as long as you aren't buying something from a large chain like Lowes or Home Depot, you're probably ok. Just go to a local shop which carries each brand or multiple ones. My Stihl place just carries Stihl, and even then, there was probably 6-7 models on the wall.

Husqvarna.

Bought one about 17 years ago.  Still going strong.

I own a Husqvarna that works well.  It was given to me as a gift.  If I was buying a chainsaw, I would go with a Stihl.
