Channing Crowder to start? (1 Viewer)

I'm interested to hear what some of you have to say about this. He will have a spot inside according to reports out of Miami. Apparently, Junior Seau is moving to SSLB and Spragan's spot is being taken by Crowder.

This sentence is self-contradictory. In their 4-3 looks, Spragan was previously their starting SLB. So if Crowder is taking Spragan's spot, it would be the SLB spot.I didn't read that article (didn't want to register), but my understanding is that Crowder will be the starting SLB in their 4-3. And Seau will not move to SLB (which wouldn't make much sense anyhow).

From what I have read recently, this is what is being reported:

4-3 Alignment:

WLB - Junior Seau

MLB - Zach Thomas

SLB - Channing Crowder

3-4 Alignment:

OLB - Junior Seau

ILB - Zach Thomas

ILB - Channing Crowder

OLB - Jason Taylor

Hard to know what to make of this. I haven't seen any of their preseason games and as such don't know if they have been running the 4-3 or the 3-4 the most. If they play the 4-3 then imagine this news really doesn't mean much even if he started at SLB.

FWIW, Ourlads is listing Crowder as the starting SLB.

Didn't know he was starting but am very glad to see that. What kind of FF production are we looking at in this type of Defense? I'm not familiar at all with Miami's Def.

My understanding is that it's much like Dallas' in that it's a hybrid 4-3/3-4 defense, depending up on down and distance and personnel packages. Thing is, Dallas' personnel seem better geared for the 3-4 set, while Miami seems the opposite. For example, Jason Taylor is far too small for the traditional 3-4 DE role, which usually plays inside the LT and is therefore bulkier. If I'm right, and their base set is the 4-3, then Crowder is probably less important as a fantasy player because his role as a 4-3 SLB puts him in pass coverage more often. Long term, I think he's a stud because he's the heir apparent inside given Thomas' age. This looks to me like Sabin thinks he's too talented to keep off of the field and he's giving him a temporary role to get him there.

As someone who has drafted and contracted Crowder for four years without any hope of contribution in 2005 this is welcome news

Thanks for the info. That's good stuff right there!

Miami Herald Article
As for Crowder, he was elevated to the starting lineup during practice Saturday, and veteran Junior Seau was moved to outside linebacker. However, Saban stopped short of saying those moves were permanent.
FWIW, Rotoworld had Crowder moving to WLB and Seau moving over to SLB. It seems no two stories match. The Dolphins website still has CC as MLB2.

I just looked at Ourlads; they have him as the starting SLB. I'd trust those guys before I'd go with a newspaper or even the team website webmaster . . .

I'll second the utter lack of use that team website depth charts are. Some of them haven't been updated since last week. I saw at least one or two players who've been cut on them.Right now, I'm trying to figure out 3 guys listed on Ourlads as reserves, and see whom might actually be starting:Atogwe S StLJackson CB IndMitchell LB AriI'm going to start a post on figuring things out, and see if any guys with more experience know more.

The Blogger has this link today.I didn't feel like registering so I haven't read the full story, but the blogger summary is:
September 6, 2005, 09:36Dolphins :: LBOpportunistic Rookie LB Crowder To StartJason Cole, Miami Herald - [Full Article]Rookie LB Channing Crowder certainly made the most of his opportunity in training camp on the way to snagging a starting role in the season opener against Denver on Sunday. Crowder will start alongside LB Zach Thomas as an inside linebacker in the Dolphins' 3-4 defense.

In other words, we still don't know WTF is going on except that Crowder seems to have generally played well enough to get a good amount of playing time, if not start. I was already assuming that he'd be a starting ILB in the 3-4; the key here is whether or not he's on the field when they line up in the 4-3 . . . If he's not, I can't start him over some other guys I have.
