I am all for being aggressive, and like that coached are going for 2, or going for it on 4th down more often. That said, that definitely wasn't one of those times, just gifted the Raiders 3 points there.

Yep that is simply stupidity.

I don't like the play call, but I'm not too upset about going for it on 4th, even from that field position, when down by only three. If they convert it, they might be on their way to a score. As it is, it's still just a one-score game. Worse case scenario: they are down by 10 against a team they've been outplaying since the beginning of the 2nd quarter with a quarter-and-a-half left to play.

I hope idiots don't blame analytics for Staley's stupidity. Even using analytics, it was a dumb decision to go for it.

The worst thing about going for 4th and 2 (and not converting) is that it seems to have lifted the Raiders spirits.

And the % stat they just flashed….that is what has gone too far in sports…..you got computer geeks doing spread sheets and saber metrics have made many coaches make some very very bad decisions….in fact I venture to say more bad than good.

In the meantime the Chargers are getting owned on the LOS…..maybe you should watch your game and how your team is executing or lack of executing in the trenches the last few series instead of your spread sheet with your saber-metrics.

You can wipe your ### with all that if you can’t block….which clearly the Chargers are having an issue doing right now.

numbers showed it was a wash....situation/recent blocking suggests it was dumb as crap

Had they converted it (with a short pass or something they've been doing well), I'm betting few people are very outraged by the decision.

outrage? no

Shocked as hell? yes

I honestly thought something was wrong with headset and QB snapped it by accident.

Josh Jacobs might be the most "better than his stats" RB in the NFL. Feels like almost every touch he's adding 2-3 yards above what he should get. He's probably a top-10 NFL RB.

worst part of Staley decision was Raiders decision to mess up gift by running Mariota gimmick didn't get panned enough.

Totally disagree, especially since even if they converted there was still a low chance of scoring.
You still think all these armchair analysts would be upset if the conversion was successful and got them a new set of downs and further down the field? Seems unlikely.

Let me put it another way. On any given play (regardless of down, distance, time, score, etc.), what do you think is Hebert's chance of picking up two yards or more on a pass play? If it's more than 50%, I can see the argument for not just giving away the ball.

Now that I’ve had time to process what happened, I’d like to reiterate just how incredibly stupid it was to go for it on 4th down inside one’s own 20. Just so phenomenally dumb. I am shook.

Crosby has had a couple of those too. I wonder if the camera is just enough off center that its creating a bit of an optical illusion.
Nah, it happens all the time in just about every game you watch. I hate it.

And don't get me started on the offensive alignment. Players are in an illegal formation all the time, too.

I just hate the inconsistency. Call the rules as they were intended. (Or change them.)
