Chargers - Stickumgate (1 Viewer)

The NFL is investigating the San Diego Chargers for the alleged use of "Stickum," a sticky substance that gives teams a competitive advantage when it comes to catching footballs.

It's believed some Chargers players used the adhesive in "one or more games" this season. "We are looking into it," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed. In last week's meltdown loss to the Broncos, an official confiscated a sticky substance from a member of the Chargers' equipment staff. The substance is currently being tested by the league offense. "We are aware of the inquiry," the Chargers said in a statement, "and we are cooperating fully with the league." - RW

the -gate thing has jumped the shark
It never made sense in the first ****ing place.
Ever heard of Nixon?
Was Watergate a water-related incident?
This guy gets it. Watergate was called what it was because that's where it took place.Adding "gate" to any other scandal doesn't make any damn sense, and never did. It's ridiculous, and only the NFL has been a part of this stupid trend.

You're right, only the NFL has ever used the -gate suffix. It isn't a worldwide thing or anything.

How many of those have you ever actually heard referred to with the -gate suffix? Very few. The NFL loves it. Most of those never caught on. I obviously overstated the lack of usage by anyone else, but everything else stands. It's stupid.

"Everything else stands" is also incorrect. The reporters that cover the NFL love the "-gate" suffix, not the NFL. The NFL certainly doesn't name their scandals....

I expect Norv and the equipment manager should be suspended for the year, AJ for 8 games, and 4 games for whichever players used the illegal substance.

Should also be major fines and loss of draft picks.

If the Patriots lost a 1st round pick for videotaping something that was already in plain sight, then this kind of subterfuge ought to be worth at least two.

Imagine if Gates had this for his career with the whole Armstrong thing going on....

I'm very surprised there isn't more talk about this here. Is it because no one generally gives a #### about the Chargers?

IMO this is the kind of thing that should get a coach who is already on the hot-seat fired. curious why this story isn't getting mroe play - non-existant on NFL.com or espn.com.

Tell me about this Nipple-"gate" you speak of.

For what it's worth Norv denies everything:http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000083906/article/norv-turner-denies-chargers-used-stickum-vs-broncos

"Nobody from the San Diego Chargers used stickum in the game Monday night against the Denver Broncos," Norv Turner told reporters. "Nobody in this organization has used stickum in any game."League spokesman Greg Aiello told NFL.com and NFL Network on Sunday that the league is gathering facts after a Chargers equipment man was spotted concealing a possible illegal, sticky substance and distributing it to players. The substance was confiscated and sent to the Broncos and league officials. Turner said the object of suspicion is a towel bearing a substance that dries football."It's pretty widely used," Turner said.

Maybe it's because they weren't actually guilty of anything?"Following a review of the San Diego Chargers use of towels that included an adhesive substance in an October 15 game against the Denver Broncos, the NFL has determined that the club did not violate a competitive rule by use of the towels."I never even really understood what they were being accused of. To the best of my knowledge stickum wasn't tape. First it was stickum. Then some sort of tape. Then it was the use of an illegal towel. If you have some inside knowledge of what should have been covered on NFL.com or ESPN.com I'd love to hear it.
