CHI defense ranked #21 for week one? (1 Viewer)

CHI ranked in the bottom half of the DEF for week one is just crazy.

Yes, I know who they are playing against. But this is Chicago's DEF! Another very popular ff website has them ranked as the #1 DEF this week because they feel that although LT will get his the Bears DEF should be able to put pressure on Rivers and easily cover the WRs.

I'm just not seeing CHI *ever* being ranked this low. Yes, LT is a monster and will get his but this DEF is one of the more elite ff players including Peyton and LT. Just doesn't make sense.

What am I missing?

It doesnt necessarily mean that their defense will play bad, I think it means that San Diego's offense won't make nearly as many mistakes as most teams would against them. Look at the Lions defense for example - isn't it quite plausible that Culpepper will allow Detroit to score more fantasy points defensively than LT and Rivers? Unfortunately, my scoring system doesnt give me points for 3 and outs or punts - so I think it is a justified ranking for week 1.
 
well it depends on how your defensive scoring goes if it's based on turnovers...LT doesn't fumble, Rivers doens't get sacked much or throw many picks.

While I personally think 21st is low, there is no way they are the best option in week 1.
 
Is Tommie Harris even going to play in week one? Short of some special teams magic, I don't see the Bears being worth the start.

There seems to be a problem. The projections don't take pts allowed and yards allowed into consideration. Which explains why the Bears show up at #1 in the projections?! And the cheatsheet probably considers pts allowed and yds allowed. Since the Bears are expected to allow many pts to the Chargers, they are 21st. I think the projections page is flawed.

 
I am a Bears homer and I agree with the ranking.

From the Defense/ST perspective it is hard to imagine that the Bears will be able to 1. shut down SD and 2. get off on special teams. Couple that with the fact that LT does not fumble, and that Rivers throws very few INT's and it certainly leads me to believe that even if the Bears are able to win the game that they will not score a great number of fantasy points on the defense/st side of the ball. Certainly it is possible that they will return a kick for a TD, but I certainly would not bank on that against SD. You can make an argument to move them up 5 or 6 spots this week, but I really would not go beyond that. I understand why a person would start them this week if you own them since it is almost a guarantee that you had to spend a fairly early pick to get them, but week 1 is not a matchup to look forward to, IMO.

Another strike against the Bears D this week is that the SD O-line is good. Da Bears aren't going to get many sacks either. The league I'm in requires carrying two Ds and my other option is the Cards against SF, so I'm going to play the Bears. I'm thinking something along the lines of 1 INT, 2 sacks and maybe a fumble recovery for 3-4 points.

Being as this is the case, Joe or David, is it possible to expand the DEF scoring in the MyFBG section? It's a very, very bland set of options to configure your defensive scoring and it would be a nice upgrade to a great new tool.

Agree. Scoring systems for D are all over the place and MyFBG options are very limited.
 
In 2 of my leagues the top DEF scored well over 200 points putting them up there with the best RB2s. There is just no way that I sit CHI def just like I would never sit a stud RB based on the matchup.

The Bears the past 3 season have been very consistent in leagues where the top D gets big points.

 
I really don't expect the bears to stop teams from scoring this year. I do, however still expect the turnovers for TDs and Hester to continue to return kick-offs and punts. I will be starting them against SD.

scoring rules, maybe. Do you see a lot of TOs? How about a low scoring.low yardage game?I agree we probably have Chi ranked too low, but that is my opinion, not my call. My thinking is that it usually takes teams' offenses a little time to get it together, and the SD offense especially will need a little time due to the WR inexperience.

I think a ranking of #12 or so is more appropriate. That said, who would you start instead? Did you draft a b/u D?

When Team A plays Team B, I think Team A's fantasy defense's performance generally depends more on the quality of Team B's offense than on Team A's defense.

As people have mentioned, the Chargers threw only 9 INTs last year (tied for second lowest in league), Tomlinson fumbled only twice (losing one), and the Chargers gave up only 28 sacks (eighth lowest).

If the Chargers don't turn the ball over much, it's hard for opposing defenses to score TDs on interception returns and fumble returns.

Also, Mike Scifres is among the best in the league -- he may be the best in the league -- at not letting opposing teams return his punts. Which makes it hard for opposing defenses to score TDs on punt returns.

The Bears do have an above-average chance to score a TD on a kickoff return. But I don't think that makes them the top fantasy defense this week.

:thumbup: 2 of my leagues have very UNIQUE D's. Maybe a program similar to DD that allows you to set the Parameters?

I'm no Chicago homer, but from what I saw, without Tank Johnson and the other big men in the middle of that D , the Bears looked like a below avg defense the final 8 reg season games of 2006 in terms of yards allowed....I think they're closer to being more like that version, rather than what they were in the first 7-8 weeks of the 2006 season. You can run on them, without the big men up front to occupy the blockers, we all saw how badly Uhrlacher looked without Johnson and Co...Uhrlacher was easily moved aside, blocked, and appeared to be more of a pile jumper than anything else..and their secondary wasn't the best,either..Rhodes saw GAPING holes in the SB to run thru..again, they didn't have the D-linemen like Johnson, and Urlacher was pushed around in the SB..I'd be shocked if Tomlinson didn't get 120+ rush yards this weekend...

Chicago is a good defense, but I think there are better options out there...

I'm with you - it is REALLY hard to find a place on this internet thing where I can see them. ;)On the serious note, some of our best features come from ideas you all present in this very Shark's Pool. I think we've got the brain trust to do almost anything stat related that you all want.
