Chicago Bears 2012 Offseason Thread (1 Viewer)

DT? That's one of the last things we need. As for CB and DE, we could find them in the draft. We're not going to fill every hole in one offseason. Protect Jay and find him someone to throw to. The defense has holes, but it's still a very good. I'm sure I'll change my mind again soon.
If you lose Okeye to pair with Anthony Adams gone then you do have a need at DT. Melton/Paea are the only impact people at the position.
I don't think they will let Okoye walk. He was too good last year. I'll bet they sign him within the next week. They didn't plan on letting Adams go and Okoye too, imo.
If they resign him then i'm okay with your idea because in theory we will be running the ball more next year with Tice. Adding Nicks/Gaither will only improve that aspect.

-Nicks Jackson

-Gaither

-mid-level wr Meachem

-good back up qb

-draft BPA
More on board with this plan. I just absolutely don't see the need to spend all that money on a Guard. He may be one of the best in the game right now, but Guard is so far from one of our team weaknesses. We need to spend that money elsewhere like WR/DE/CB. If we lose out on Jackson/Colston, I like this plan but going with one of the CB's.

And on top of that, I still think we need to figure something out with Forte. If he holds out at all, I don't see this team going very far, and I think he knows it too.Flap mentioned earlier that he doesn't think Forte has any leverage, but would that be his leverage? I think everyone believes we have a small window, a year or two, left before the core of the defense is gone or just not effective any more. We need Forte ready to play in game shape on day 1. We need him in the offseason program and working with the team, or I just think we aren't going anywhere.

I don't know what Forte wants anymore, but I really felt before last season we could have gotten him for a 16-17mil bonus and he was worth it. Now it's probably 18-19mil, and I think we may have to do it. Forte coming in like Chris Johnson and not being in good shape and starting slow basically kills our year.

I'm fine with this, too.

Levi Brown anyone?
He below average at best and wouldn't be that different that what we've got, imo. One thing's for sure, we only have two tackles on the roster right now, so we will have to get a couple more from somewhere.

Some good work in here flapgreen

I'ld also like Emery to consider bringing in a ready made 25 year old TE talent in Martellus Bennett.

Probably cost ~ 3 million per season, but he is a better blocker and receiver than anything we have now, and at 6-7 260ish # would be a mighty big target/safety valve in addition to Matt Forte, creating some real headaches for defenses whether running or passing.

Assuming we can get a decent mid-range WR and draft one or two talented youngsters at WR it could really go a loooong way towards solidifying the offense. And it doesn't break the bank either...

My plan A: get Mario Williams and ensure the defense and pass rush are so damn good (and start getting younger) that we don't have to rely on the offense to score 3-4 TDs to win every game. Throw in cheapest WRs available.

My plan B: Adopt flap's plan A to solidify the o-line first, and then add bargains at WR and Bennett at TE

My plan C: "Shotgun approach" - Bargains all around with emphasis on OT, DT, WR, and Bennett at TE

My plan D: Go get VJax and pray that his heart and head stay in the right place, and that along with Cutler and Forte he helps propel this offense into one of the better units in the NFL. Add one other bargain FA.

Riskiest plans Most Expensive plansD - lot of eggs in VJax basket A - Mario breaks bank A - see D, but young elite DE much less risky than WR B - lot of investment in offense need to rely on draft for 'D'C - only fear is quality of pro player eval here D - IF VJax doesn't pan out Bears are screwedB - only problem here is allowing defense to slide C - Lots of flexibility, no real long term investments
Any other solid options?

Am I right/wrong on risk/expense rankings?

Mostly agree here, couple of edits for my thoughts below.

Current free agents on the Bears. Who we re-sign will obviously affect the cap.

RFA

Khalil Bell. Will re-sign

UFA

Roy Will. I sure as hell hope not

Kellen Davis. Will re-sign.

Idonije. Questionable, but probably re-sign probably not for me, I think they try to get younger here.

Okoye. Priority #1 on re-signings. Get this guy signed!!!

Corey Graham. Doesn't look likely.

Tim Jennings. Probably re-sign

Zach Bowman. Probably re-sign. Again, I think probably not here, hasn't shown starter ability, and i think we use our rd 2 on a corner

Steltz-who knows Don't they have to resign him?? I don't think there is anyone else, he backed up pretty well, knows the system

Merriweather-gone

Any other guys we let go of over the course of the offseason will be considered dead cap space, because they will still receive part of their salary, like Omifail and Adams have.

I'm a Chicago fan living in Dallas. You do not want any part of Martellus Bennett.

I know he's had some maturity issues, but Dallas doesn't strike me as a very disciplined locker room either. Besides the versatility (good blocker/receiver) and youth are intriguing to say the least. Especially for a team that desperately needs to upgrade its offensive weapons. Is there a TE with better upside and risk/reward to be had in FA?Guess it comes down to pro player evaluation in the end, and I'm afraid the Bears new regime may not be solidified in that area yet.

Martellus Bennett is averaging less than 2 receptions for 15 yards per game and hasn't scored a TD in over 3 years. This is while playing 60 games on a passing team with Tony Romo chucking the rock and multiple pro-bowl receiving options (Witten, Austin) on the field at the same time. I don't think he's an offensive player and he's too expensive to be a blocker. When he was drafted 4 years ago he exuded potential. IMO he exudes something different now.

I'll admit I don't have the pro player evaluation chops to speculate with great credibility on whether or not Bennett is a legit talent or not. However, I'm intrigued by his youth/size/blocking/receiving ability in an NFL landscape that is increasingly favoring involvement of big athletic TEs.As far as the points you made about his past prodution:

How many snaps did he really get in those 60 games, and how many of those were actually on passing downs? How many times was he asked to be a blocker?

And with a potential HOFer in front of him in Witten, and top-flight WR options is it really a surprise that he didn't get much work in the passing game?

Hell with Dallas' offensive line woes over the last few seasons there have been times where even Witten has had to stay in and block and has 'disappeared' for long stretches.

I'm not sure I can agree with your reasoning at face value. Doesn't make you wrong, just that I think I have some valid reasons to be skeptical here...

^^^Long story short, Bennett is an idiot.

If he understood the game, or cared to understand it depending on who you ask, then he would have seen the field more in Dallas. The effort and mental aspect was never there so he never got on the field. Both of these were concerns when he got to the league too.

Bennett's just camp fodder until he gets his head screwed on straight, which he probably won't.

I don't have the answers to all your questions, but over the last two seasons only 40 TE's have received as many targets (67) as Martellus Bennett. Of those 40 only 10 have a better receiving percentage than MB's 67.2% so he doesn't drop the ball often. If you have an above average receiving athletic TE with Miles Austin and Jason Witten pulling coverage there should be a mismatch somewhere to exploit. MB was never able to take advantage of that.

I can only assume the problem is either he runs poor routes, doesn't get open, or Romo simply doesn't trust him. Regardless, if he couldn't become an option in Dallas I see nothing that indicates he could do so in Chicago. Take a moment to do a youtube search for Martellus Bennett videos. There are thousands of them but how many are NFL highlights? Even Kellen Davis has an NFL highlight video.

IMO MB is an incredible athelete who has all the physical skills to excel. Unfortunately it appears he's either lazy, lacks heart, or lacks the intelligence to reach his potential in the NFL. Many times someone can be dominant in college and completely disappear in the NFL when their athleticism alone isn't enough to carry them against the best competition in the world. I think this is another case of that.

I could be very wrong about Bennett, but the Bears are desperate for improved blocking and receiving targets.

At 25 yrs. old and with the receiving and blocking ability this big athletic TE brings to the table, and at a price tag that isn't prohibitive, I honestly see the risk/reward as being one worth considering. Again I admit I could be wrong and others could be spot on, but some gambles are worth taking IMO.

I'll stop arguing about it, but I won't be at all disappointed if the Bears nab him for a couple years at a reasonable price.

I can get on board with this proposed acquisition. -Good call.Carlson went to Notre Dame, right? Not sure where he grew up, but maybe since CHI is in the same neck of the woods as his school, it might have some added appeal?

 Hasn't he missed a lot of time with various injuries?
Carlson hasn't played a full regular season since 2009, and hasn't played in ANY games since the 2010 post-season, having spent the 2011 season on IR with a torn labrum.Despite having a healthy Carlson (at the time) under contract through 2011, the Seahawks went out and signed TE Zach Miller to a five year $34 million dollar contract in August of 2011.IF the Bears are preparing to spend BIG elsewhere I wouldn't mind Carlson as a bargain bin TE, but I wouldn't look for him to be anything more than an average TE when healthy. That's still a hell of a lot better than Kellen Davis though...

Lovie believes in Davis and Webb, unfortunately. After all of these years, he's still holding onto the Hester lie. I'm sure will hear again during training camp how Hester has made strides as a receiver. :loco:

With the talk that Finnegan and Vincent Jackson are a package deal, Chicago makes the most sense. Chicago is a playoff team(7-3 with cutty, NFC Championship year before) and both of those players want to win. They also both want good money, which Chicago can provide.

Other teams:

Washington-not as ready to win as Chicago

Detroit-can't afford both Vjax/Finnegan

Tampa Bay-see Washington, plus the ownership in Tampa doesn't seem to have large pockets

I don't like VJax at all as their splash in FA and would prefer spending the money on a tandem of Garcon and Meacham, or even Laurent Robinson.

If they land Mario Williams, that would be a clue as to Emery realizing the D in long in the tooth and is planning for the next couple of years down the road. By landing Williams, they can be prepared when Peppers calls it a career.

I would love to see them sign one of either Carr or Finnegan to fill the hole at CB.

This team just has so many upgradeable positions, it's amazing they were playing at a playoff level until Cutler went on IR. Then the wheels came off and they were exposed on both sides of the ball.

Where has that talk come from? I'm not doubting it, i've just never heard anything like it before. What is the reasoning behind it? Same agent or something like that?I would see them being a good pair to get in free agency if the price works out.

Found this on Profootballtalk.com:http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/08/report-finnegan-recruiting-vincent-jackson-for-possible-package-deal/Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reports that free agent cornerback Cortland Finnegan is actively “recruiting” free agent wideout Vincent Jackson to join Finnegan on his next NFL team. Cole suspects that team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Yeah, just found the same thing on CSNChicago. That's pretty interesting, seems like a strange plan, not sure why either would want to possibly limit what they can sign for by trying to make it a package deal, but who knows.

Dallas Clark.....very tempting.33 and often dinged though. What say ye...
I don't really see the point. He's missed half of each of the last 2 seasons. I'm all for adding proven guys but he's way past his prime. I don't think there's much of a chance they go after Clark, just not a good year for f/a tight ends. Most teams were a step ahead of us with the tight end craze. Now there's not much left, at least for now. I'd say there's a slim chance in hell we can get something close to Olsen with the third round pick we got in exchange for him.

Of course he is past his prime, but that doesnt mean he couldnt help. I would bet he can be productive in the right spot for two more yrs.

We WERE ahead of teams, right up until they shipped Olsen to Carolina. :wall:

Yeah. I counted that as being behind since they traded him away.

I'm getting on the Nicks bandwagon more and more every day. Not many chances you get to sign , arguably, the best player at his position in the NFL at the age of 26/27. Change of heart. Do it!!!

Had a dream last night that I was in the Bears war room during the draft this season. It was in a dirty hotel room. With my assistance, we drafted Stephen Hill. Take it to the bank!

If the Bears Ownership is going to go cheap on the War Room, then I would guess they would trade out of the first round and take 3 Guards with their first 3 picks. (followed by a kicker and 2 punters with their 3 picks after that) Did you say dream.....or Nightmare ??

 I'm with you on this. I was dreaming of a Peppers/Williams pass-rush, but tying up the team's cap at DE and the opportunity cost of short changing so many other needs is too harsh a price to pay.I fully endorse the Nicks/Gaither sweepstakes to solidify the O-line for the rest of Cutler's career in Chicago. Won't be cheap but probably still enough cap room to re-sign our own UFAs and a FA WR at reasonable prices.Besides Emery's strength is supposed to be in scouting the college ranks so let him fill in the defensive needs and a WR or two in the draft and start earning his paycheck IMO.

Oh Danny boy. One day Dan says don't spend any big money on one guy. The next day he says break the bank on one guy.

Texans' Williams should be Bears' top free-agent target

WR a need too, but rare pass-rushing skills too good to pass up

A little more than a month after the Bears professed to be re-emphasizing the draft, they likely are about to make it rain in free agency.

But that's good because this is an unusual year in free agency. Typically, the market mostly offers players who are old, overrated or out to lunch. But starting Tuesday, some difference-makers will be available.

It isn't often you see free agents the caliber of Texans defensive end Mario Williams, former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, Saints guard Carl Nicks, Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson, Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan, Saints wide receiver Marques Colston, Chiefs cornerback Brandon Carr and Seahawks defensive end Red Bryant.

If the Bears are thinking of casting a line for one big fish, the decision facing general manager Phil Emery is this: Williams or Jackson?

Defense or offense?

Sacks or touchdowns?

Signing Jackson, or even Colston, would be a coup for the Bears. But pass rushers like Williams hardly ever are available. If Williams is within the Bears' grasp, he should be their man.

Williams is Julius Peppers all over again, except he's three years younger than Peppers was when the Bears signed him. At 27, Williams also is two years younger than Jackson.

Those years could be significant when the price to sign Williams may be a $30 million signing bonus and about $14 million a year.

Williams' best football should be ahead of him. You probably wouldn't make that argument about Jackson.

It's easy to envision Williams thriving in Chicago, playing on the opposite side of the line of Peppers and being coached by one of the finest defensive line teachers and motivators in the NFL in Rod Marinelli.

The Bears could bring out the best in Williams, and he could bring out the best in them. Their defense badly needs another pass-rushing force to maximize the talents of Peppers. Last season Peppers created havoc without reaping a benefit far too often. If Williams were on the same line, that would change.

Williams is a rare talent. He might be a notch below Peppers, according to three front-office men who were polled. But there isn't much difference.

"He doesn't have the same quick twitch that Peppers has, and he's been a little inconsistent game to game," one said. "But he has excellent play strength and a lot of tools. You would take him over Cliff Avril, definitely."

Williams had five sacks in his first five games last season before tearing a pectoral muscle. Over five years, he has a better sacks-per-game average (0.73) than all but the Cowboys' DeMarcus Ware (1.0) and the Vikings' Jared Allen (0.99).

Williams was the first pick of the 2006 draft. If you could put all the free agents in a draft today, he would be the first pick again.

It's true the Bears would have an inordinate investment in their defensive ends if they signed Williams. But collecting pass rushers didn't hurt the Super Bowl champion Giants. The Lions have quite a group too.

As the subjects of the A&E series "Hoarders" might attest, you can't have too much of a good thing — especially pass rushers, and especially given the defensive and team philosophies the Bears subscribe to.

A defensive end's value is much greater than that of a wide receiver to the Bears. It's true a great quarterback can make his receivers better. On the other side of the ball, it's the end who makes his teammates better.

Many teams have won big without star receivers. Few have won without a pass rush that keeps quarterbacks up at night and down during games.

There will be competition for Williams. Teams that could be in the running are the Bills, Buccaneers, Chargers, Cowboys, Jaguars, Patriots, Seahawks, Titans and Texans. But that shouldn't prevent the Bears from trying.

If Williams says yes, the Bears still could add a second-tier free-agent receiver, maybe the Broncos' Eddie Royal or the Cowboys' Laurent Robinson.

If Williams says no, I could see them turning their attention to a No. 1 receiver and pursuing Jaguars defensive end Jeremy Mincey.

The top name on their wish list, however, should be Mario Williams.

I guess to maybe replace Roach. He's terrible. I dotn't think there's a playere we're NOT interested in at this point, according to someone. Wright is usually the most reliable one, though.

Plus you guys don't really have a plan B for Urlacher, right? Assuming you don't Hawthorne fits that mold. Then you guys can go in a different direction in the draft than MIKE backer.

I hope we don't get caught up in signing lesser needs like Hawthorne and miss out on addressing key needs. Like M Williams, VJax, etc. Focus, Focus, Focus.

David Hawthorne - He doesn't fit perfectly since he's not a speedy player, but he can play all three positions at LB's. Supposedly, a good run defender.
