Childress: Rice 'might be about 3 weeks' away

Coach Brad Childress indicated over the weekend that Sidney Rice "might be about three weeks" away from returning.

It's not clear if that's three weeks from practicing or playing, though SI.com's Peter King took it to mean Rice will play in the final eight games of the season. We can't guarantee that Rice will be ready to contribute before mid-November, but this news confirms that he's well worth stashing in 10- and 12-team leagues. Brett Favre, if he stays healthy and suspension free, will see a spike production in the second half. Oct. 19 - 4:10 pm et

Hmm I can stash only one prospect WR: VJax or Rice. Rice will be back much sooner than VJax but I think game 12 on Vjax will be the Wr to own.

If Rice really is back playing within 3 weeks that would seriously dampen the prospects of either Harvin or Moss. I would think Harvin, having a much different skillset than both Moss and Rice, would be safer, but there are not going to be enough balls to go around for all three. This presents a pretty messed up WR situation in Minny. I assumed when they traded for Randy that they were not expecting Rice to return this season.

Its extremely unlikely that Rice will be game ready in 3 weeks. He was on crutches less than 2 weeks ago. He just returned to the practice field on Friday for some light jogging. They are going to bring this guy along slowly and the Nov 21 game is probably the absolute earliest he plays in a game.

Agreed. Word here in MN is that they will activate him and just have em be inactive for each game while he is practicing and slowly getting back into football shape, I doubt he gets back into game shape until December.

There was a news article posted in the FBGs news feed last Saturday that said Rice was still at least a week away from running. That, combined with the acquisition of Moss, made me cut bait in a redraft--it sounds like he's still at least a month from game shape, and then there's still the question of redeveloping chemistry + an offense that would have a lot of mouths to feed barring injuries.

If/when Rice returns the Vikings offense should be really formidable in a NFL sense, but I can see it being really frustrating for fantasy players. Peterson will be loving life, but Moss/Rice/Harvin (as well as Shiancoe to a lesser degree) will all score 0 one week and 20 the next...it will be kind of like the Saints or Broncos receivers except neither of those teams have a RB that demands the ball like Peterson.
