SD insider just tweeted that Chris Chambers has been released from the Chargers. Fantasy relevance?

Only relevant if/when somebody else picks him up, then you analyze... right now he's just as valuable as Joey Galloway.

Chris Chambers-WR-Chargers Nov. 2 - 3:01 pm et

Chargers released WR Chris Chambers.

The move locks in Malcom Floyd as a starter. The writing was on the wall for Chambers throughout the season's first half. Struggling badly to get open, the 31-year-old managed just 122 yards in seven games. He's simply lost his explosiveness, and never had reliable hands. Legedu Naanee now becomes San Diego's clear-cut third receiver. Chambers will probably get another look elsewhere, but his days of being an impact player are long gone.

BIG bump for Floyd... he looked like he was gonna go off yesterday but didn't do anything after the 1st quarter.

This would be great news for Malcolm Floyd as he moves into the starting role. I don't think it has much affect on Rivers, VJax, or Gates because Chambers sucked.

Per Schefter:'WR Chris Chambers has been released'
What does this mean for Floyd and Naanee?Naanee has 13 receptions so far on the season, but only one yesterday. Floyd had 11 receptions on the season, but has been a little more involved recently - 7 catches the last three games. I don't even think Naanee played the last couple games before this week.ETA - look like Floyd got the start over Chambers yesterday anyway.

According to Keven Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune:

'The primary reason for CC axe was Floyd's emergence. Defensively and in the kicking need to get help. Will add a LB in the next few days--ka'

'Kassim Osgood will get work at receiver now, Norv says. And Buster too, maybe -- ka'

It's amazing how some WRs age gracefully (Mason, Driver, Owens) while others hit a wall and vanish overnight (Horn, Moulds, Chambers).

This could be a good pickup for a team with a lot of young receivers like Tennessee or Cleveland. I'm not going to argue this guy's value as an elite #1 receiver for those teams, but rather the experience to teach young receivers some tricks of the trade of how to get off being jammed at the LOS or weaknesses in opposing DBs games.

Really feel a bit sad reading this. I was a fan of Chambers and thought he had a lot of talent as a young player coming into the league.

Chambers was a good guy, never any of the big problems like a lot of players, however he never lived up to his potential.

He never positioned his body well and never fought for a ball, he would sit back and let the ball come to him and time and again the corner would jump it while he's sitting there waiting.

How much could this possibly help any WRs? Chambers had what, like 15 yards/game on average?
But how many snaps/game and targets/game did he have?
9 catches from 31 targets for 122 yards and a TD. Thats about 4 additional targets/game between Jackson, Gates, Sproles, etc. I dont know, I guess I dont see this as having a HUGE impact that everyone is getting excited over. And if Floyd has additional snaps, who is he stealing targets from if you think him starting will get him more targets than Chambers was?

Exactly. I'm stashing Floyd on my bench and fine with it............The Chargers targeted WR's 18 times yesterday and Floyd got 4 targets with Chambers being in the lineup. This is also a game where Rivers only attempted 25 total passes (his lowest of the year). With Chambers gone now and Floyd starting you have to think he'll be targeted at least 4-6 times per game. The way Jackson is playing he is going to start drawing lots of doubles and top corner coverage so I have to think Floyd will see plenty of single coverage with Jackson and Gates being who they are.

With calvin's status mum and Rice on a bye this week, I will welcome the opportunity to start the WR lining up on the oppostie side of Jackson against the Giants. Everyone else has abused that secondary lately, why not Malcom?

The difference is that Chambers was never really that good to begin with.

:bowtie: True, Chambers really doesn't deserve to be in the same conversation with Mason, Driver, Owens, Horn and Moulds. All those guys were better players in their prime than Chambers ever was.

Most of those guys are still better in their decline than Chambers was in his prime. He was one of those guys people always thought would break out, but outside of 2005 (82-1118-11) he was nothing but disappointing.

The memory of Chambers that will live the longest is of this Dolphins fan I knew who in 2003 went around telling everyone that Chambers was better than Randy Moss and only needed a better QB.

I remember at Wisconsin he had a flair for making the circus grabs but constantly dropped the easy ones.

For the dynasty minded:

VJack = free agent in 2010. Most likely to be signed quick though. I can see part of Chambers' contract being spent toward VJ.

Floyd = free agent in 2010. Unsure if they will re-sign him or not.

Osgood = free agent in 2010. Special teams pro-bowler has been trying to get released for over a year.

Naanee = free agent in 2011. Can probably start if Floyd isn't brought back.

Davis = free agent in 2012. First round bust so far. Inactive every week. Who knows?

Byrd = free agent in 2013. Let's see him get on the field first. Decent talent though.

About what it was as of yesterday. I don't know if this is going to make any difference - how well does he know the playbook? When will he leapfrog Bradley? He's never going to surpass Bowe. Can he actually hold onto the ball?

I wouldn't bother picking him up.

what is his fantasy value?
Not much. He was the #2 wr on an offense light years ahead of KC and he did nothing. I guess he won't have as many targets as they did in SD but they also throw for probably 1/2 as many yards. Learning a new system, bad team, deteriorating talent....not a great mix.

<hijack>

I wonder who the chiefs will release to make room for him. Hmmmm...

Ha ha...I don't think they can release him. Can they? Probably just leave him deactivated?Did he go off Waivers? So SD off the hook for like $2.5M?Will Haley threaten Bowe (or Cassell or the fans) that he will start Chambers?

Doesn't this mean that San Diego are off the hook for the rest of his $5.4m salary this year & the chiefs pick it up?

Chris Chambers should not even be in the news....apart from one year, the guy is flat out useless. He drops more passes than anyone I have ever seen in the NFL. I would pick up Keenan Burton or Danny Amendola off the WW right now before Chris Chambers....especially when he is on the Chiefs.

Yeah, pretty much. Sad that hacks like him continue to fool NFL GM's.
