I don't pass judgment on people.  I consider myself insanely lucky not to have to deal with depression issues, and I can't imagine what it must be like to be that despondent or bereft emotionally.  I can never walk a mile in his shoes, so I don't feel like my assessment of the situation would be anything but balcony sniping.  I feel for his family and friends.

 
Soundgarden was my favorite band of the grunge era and I saw them in 96 or 97.  Missed out on the recent Temple of the Dog tour when they hit NYC and really upset I didn't make time to see them.  

 
Very sad.  I'm numb to the numerous overdose deaths with celebrities these days, but suicide (if that's the case) is so haunting. Hearing the people who struggle with thoughts in the thread on this board is tough.  You feel helpless.  How anyone gets to that mental state, especially with a successful career, wife and kids is tough to comprehend. But the mind is complex.  Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.  And obviously his fans - great stories here guys.

I used to be very judgmental about suicide. Then I went through a rough divorce and experienced some truly heart-breaking estrangement from one of my kids. I never seriously contemplated it, but suddenly it was relate-able to me. And I wasn't clinically depressed; I didn't have a brain chemistry problem. I was just sad and depressed about some awful ####. 

In the past two years, two of my old friends have killed themselves and more recently two teenagers who were close to people in my immediate family have killed themselves. 

It goes without saying these were huge tragedies to the people that were close to them. And, objectively, we would have to say they were selfish decisions. But I also know none of these people would have hurt their loved ones like that if they were thinking clearly. They had to be trapped in despair that most of us have trouble imagining.

He certainly had very broad catalog that extends well beyond Soundgarden. Someone else already mentioned it but one of my favorites is "You Know My Name" from the Casino Royale soundtrack.

Producer Barbara Broccoli says: "Chris Cornell ushered in the new era of Bond with his adrenaline fuelled song "You Know My Name" for Casino Royale. He was a gentleman and a true artist and we loved every moment of our collaboration with him. Michael and I and the entire Bond family mourn his tragic loss.”"

Soundgarden and Chris Cornell were always my favorite band/person that I never got to see live.  So when they announced a tour with NIN in 2014, my wife and I jumped on the opportunity to rectify this situation.  To be honest, I wasn't expecting a great sounding show.  I figured that after 30 years of singing the way that Cornell sings, his voice would be shot.  I couldn't have been more wrong.  It ended up being on of the best shows I'd ever seen.

Haven't thought of that song in years.  Decades.  That was on steady rotation at the fraternity house circa 1993/94.  

Of all the early 90s acts that dominated my college life and beyond, I always felt that Soundgarden was the best of the best.  Better than Pearl Jam by a country mile.  Much better than AIC and Nirvana, though Nirvana's whitewashing of the hairbands was a blessing.  Always felt Down on the Upside was criminally underrated as an album and would put "Blow up the Outside" and "Burden in my Hand" among their very best tunes.  

Heavy SG rotation for me today.

 
Met and hung out with him a bit once - 1994, at a PAW show Limpy - he was very cool and gracious and patient with my drunk ###.

I liked Soundgarden alot but they were never quite up there with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, or Smashing Pumpkins for me. I never did get into their earlier stuff or even their last couple of albums. I did like Euphoria Morning. I think I need to spend some time and revisit their catalogue.

And not to be insensitive, Pretty Noose another great tune. Impossible not to sing full volume when that was playing in the car. RIP.

Oh, how I remember that one.  It wasn't even the provocation or insensitivity that bothered me in that thread, it was the ignorance that was absolutely staggering.

I'm sure I've told you this before, but back around '93, one of the stalls in the Wrigley Field Bleacher's bathrooms had 'Lawrence Hates Paw' scrawled on it. So not sure how welcome they are.

I liked that song, actually. Taped it from radio on a Nakamichi cassette on a Nak deck because I didn't want to buy it in the store.

Well they made a great album, and were blowing up enough to have CC and Kim Thayil hanging out backstage at their London show.  Also they were vocal right wingers so maybe that's why Lawrence hated them :shrug:

 
Oddly enough, just a couple months later I saw Soundgarden play in London themselves and TAD opened that show

Had no idea they were outspoken right wingers. Great. That fits. I hate outspoken right wingers. 

I mean, my favorite hardcore/punk L.A. album was cut by a band called the Circle Jerks.

It was fine by me, they had an anti-liberal anthem they were very proud of called "Sunflower" and they #### talked Zach De La Rocha on stage that night

I was in the military and a bit of a Republican myself in those days.

 
I was always fond of the last song "The Last Remaining Light" on the first Audioslave.. will sound good on the CC mix I'll inevitably throw together this weekend

Yeah, I'm kinda fine with any politics when it comes to music -- I'm so used to it. Just an interesting note. I do wonder though, how does Zach justify copyright law when it's an extension of property rights that he hates. 

Always thought he left himself a gaping hole. Anyway, this is for Chris Cornell and simple RIPs. So it shall be.

Agree with I am the Highway. My other favorite from that album was Like a Stone.

P.S. Still can't get away from calling it an "album" even though I have it on CD. Ties back in with the "feeling like an old fart" comments because of others saying Soundgarden was their first CD.
