Chris R. Young, SD SP (1 Viewer)

I can see he was just dropped in the league I'm in, and that he's stunk thus far. Given that he's (in my recollection) an uber-talented SP, is he a definite pickup in a mixed league? Any concerns, injury or otherwise? Merely a slow start thus far that should be rectified soon? TIA.

IMO he should defintely be rostered in a 12 team league.

Pitching against the weak NL West and at home in spacious PETCO he has always done well.

On the road? Not so much

Young has always been the type of players to give you a series of great starts and then have one complete meltdown that scorches his overall stats. This season he has just had a few more of these meltdowns than normal.

Examples in the past month or so:

Good/Great

4/12 W, 7.0IP, 0 ER, 4 hits, 0 bb, 7K (Giants)

4/22 7.0IP, 0 ER, 2 hits, 4 bb, 3K (Giants)

5/2 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 hits, 2bb, 5K (Dodgers)

Meltdowns

4/27 3.0 IP, 8 ER, 7 hits, 5BB, 3K (Rockies)

5/13 4.0 IP, 6 ER, 6 hits, 3BB, 3K (Cubs)

You are not going to be able to find the type of pitcher that can put up the kind of games Young can when he's on. I think he's still a little gun shy on the mound from having his face shattered last summer, and that he'll get more consistent as the season progresses. He also has a tendancy to struggle against faster, younger, teams because his pick off move is terrible (Ask Dexter Fowler).

ETA: Also, as an extreme fly ball pitcher, make sure to avoid playing him on the road in a hitter's park.

:fishy: Without looking at the splits I'd start him in San Francisco but that may be the only non PETCO park I'd start him, maybe Atlanta (their offense sucks and they don't run). His fly ball tendencies do poorly elsewhere and he is the absolute worst pitcher in the majors at holding runners, if anyone with the slightest amount of speed gets on against him they're going to be on 2nd or 3rd in a hurry.
