Chris Simms released (1 Viewer)

Bucs released QB Chris Simms, according to NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

They should've traded him during draft time, when Tampa Bay was offered a mid-round pick. Now, he's available to the highest bidder. The Bears are known to be interested in Simms, who's 28 and didn't play badly in camp.

He would fit right in with Grossman and Orton.

Do the Bears have no concept of QB play in the NFL?

Bears should have been in the Tampa parking lot waiting for Simms to walk to his car. What a shame they refuse to upgrade their QB position.

Vikings better try to get him. He would be their 3rd QB, but they need to insure themselves in case Tarvaris doesn't recover.

Id agree if it was a bit earlier in the pre-season. However Signing Simms at this point would seem more like insurance for 2009. Maybe get a few games under his belt once the Bears are out of the playoff race.Bears fans are looking forward to wasting our 1st pick on Tim Tebow next year :goodposting:

I lost a little respect for Gruden on this one. He never intended to give Simms a chance to start, he gave up a chance to trade Simms for a draft pick, and now he waits until the absolute last possible minute to give the kid a chance to find a job. That's about as cold as it gets.

Speaking only superficially without knowing all the details of the inner workings, TB has treated Simms extremely poorly. After suffering a life-threatening injury, coming back and being trailed along without any chance of starting or contributing and now holding onto him until it's too late to be picked up and make a serious run in 2008 with another team, I think TB as an organization should be ashamed of themselves. I know it's just a business and I'm sure someone will respond that there's more to it than I or others know about, but I've read enough about the TB/Simms relationship to have this impression.

I have to agree with Bostonfred and gianmarco. This was a horrible way to treat a person. Gruden and the Bucs organization are guilty of treating a guy who almost died playing ball for them as nothing more than a steer in the field. To be done with as the butcher wishes. A big :goodposting: to the TB and Gruden. I dont care what he did or said.

He's not the greatest QB in the world but there aren't too many guys in the NFL who can give their teams a shot at winning with them at QB. Sure he struggled plenty but he's got low end starter level talent. Those guys don't exactly grow on trees. Here's hoping he gets in a place that will allow his career to develop again. I'm sure pulling for him.

Trust me, this type of behavior has tarnished the Bucs reputation and I guarantee you that free agents don't want to play for Tampa if they can help it.

You'd think that, but there are very few teams that haven't tarnished their reputation at one time or another. In the long run, teams can get away with tarnishing their reputation, and players can't. That's a huge advantage in negotiations.

:o They just signed the premier OL FA this offseason. I can't believe anyone would think this matters.I don't get the hand-wringing over Simms. Not like they weren't paying him (a lot, actually...he was compensated very well for his role and time here). They kept him because they thought he had trade value, not because of some evil dirty vendetta that some people (and in Bostonfred's case, smart people) seem to have bought into. The Bucs didn't hate Chris Simms, they thought they could eventually move him when teams lost QBs to injuries in the preseason so they could get a pick out of it. Makes no sense. Who waives a commodity for free unless they absolutely have to? Why wouldn't they explore his value to the very end?

Jeff Faine signed with Tampa Bay because he was offered a 37.5 million dollar contract. Had other teams offered him the same he would probably be elsewhere. Jon Gruden isn't exactly Tony Dungy in regards to how he treats his players. He constantly lies to his players and word spreads quickly. Just about every player who leaves Tampa has something negative to say about Gruden. Money talks, but if all is the same, a player isn't coming to play for Tampa which is Plan D if Plan A, B and C doesn't pan out.

Says who? You? Since Gruden has been here they've re-signed plenty of their own players and plenty of free-agents that were available.

[JerryAngelo]The forward pass is a fad - it will come and go before you know it.[/JerryAngelo]I hope they sign Simms and give him a look. He can't be worse than Grossman.

Almost hurts to do this, but  I was a Gruden fan once upon a time.......

You know, the season Chrissy got hurt he was to be a free agent. I was at that game when he got injured, deadly hot. For those who aren't aware, Chrissy was 0-4 at that point and had 1 TD / 9 INTs.

Anyways, at the end of the season (2006).....before he even came back and showed that he could throw a ball the Bucs offered Chrissy a nice extension with a SIGNING BONUS. If Chrissy wanted to leave, he should have said no. Instead of being cut last summer when NO ONE would have paid him the Bucs mercifully put him on IR and paid his salary the entire year (2007). Now, they have a QB competition and honestly it's hard to see him beating out Garcia, Griese, or McKown but if one was to get hurt and they cut him earlier in the preseason to "be nice" would have been a very poor move.

In the grand scheme of things, Chrissy got hurt in 2006. Got paid about 4million to do NOTHING, then #####es about having to compete in camp this summer. Now he gets his freedom and someone will also waste their money on him. He's riding on his dad's name in my opinion.

 He is good enough to start for the Bears or Chiefs right now, and probably the Ravens too.

The Ravens are expected to explore the quarterback market and are rumored to be interested in Chris Simms.

Kyle Boller (labrum) has told teammates he expects to be ruled out for the season. With Troy Smith's underwhelming preseason and Joe Flacco not yet ready to take over, Simms could emerge as a starting candidate if he signs in Baltimore. The Packers, Cowboys, and Bears are other potential suitors.

Simms/GrudenAgain, this isn't a guy who just blew out a knee and fractured a bone. He almost died on the field. He's had to recover from a serious injury. There's a couple of times in life where you just do the "right" thing (or nice thing as you want to call it). I don't think Simm's salary broke the bank in TB or even close to it. However, at least from Simm's perspective, this relationship has been strained for a while. So yeah, they put him on IR in 2007 and paid him. That's great. Why keep him around this year when there was obviously no intention of letting him play?

You make it sound like they did him a favor by paying him. I don't think Chris Simm's needs the money that badly. I don't think he rehabbed to come back and play in the sport where he almost died just to get a paycheck. The guy wants to play football. We're not talking about a superstar here that could be the key to TB's future or could come back and hurt them if he goes to a divisional foe. Be classy and give the guy his wish if things aren't working out together. Do you do this for all players? Of course not. But in special circumstances, you do. This is one of them.

This is a bit of a tangent, but I must admit I am curious if this will have any affect on Phil Simm's ability to be objective while commentating a Tampa Bay game. There are numerous emotional posts in this thread, I wonder if he has the same feelings or even more so given it was his son. At one point, he became agitated when someone questioned Chris's toughness. What happens if during the game his partner mentions the way his son was dealt with? Would he maintain his professionalism or fly off the handle?

Appears nobody wants this guy. Baltimore signed the corpse of Todd Bouman ( ) instead of Simms.

Gruden is the anti-christ though for hoarding him from all these prospective employers. Shame on him.

Thank God, amen, you got this summed up pretty well, but I want to interject and say something. I lost a lot of respect for Gruden in the whole process of this. My perception as a fan is that SImms was under an immense amount of pressure and i didn't see Gruden caring much that SUnday when Simms could have possibly died. I really felt like his father was needed big time when this happened. I know he got down there pretty quick and sort of created a buffer between the Bucs and Simms...now Phil Simms has quite a bit of influence in the media of the NFL and it would ahve looked horrible had the Glazers and the Bucs thrown Simms away. The Glazers can sit in these NFL owners meetings and no one can say a word to them, the GM, whoever because they paid his ### the whole time he was out...and by God they should have. I cannot predict whether he will succeed at the next place, but I do think he makes a quality back up on a team like Dallas who has Brad Johnson right now, should something happen to Romo, I wouldn't want to have ride the season out with Johnson. Dallas is in a position to where they have to think about what would happen if...they simply have too much talent to make a SB run.
