They can't pass the collection basket via zoom, and these old folks (marks) aren't set up on Venmo.
these giant tax exempt businesses are gonna get more and more desperate for your hard earned money.  they should confirm to guidelines.  they should be taxed.  would easily pay for the CARES act.

Too easy to stream music and sermons to any home with an internet connection.  The social aspect just needs to wait for now.

If a large church insists on holding regular services... maybe because they're afraid they won't get regular tithe checks, then shame on them.  It's irresponsible and puts others in unnecessary danger.

The state shutting it down is constitutionally problematic because of the incorporation I mention. Any state actor, state, municipality, whatever, is now subject to scrutiny. It used to be only the federal government that was subject to the First. Now it's the states, who have farmed that right out to the executive, and so on...

you can see where the byzantine system of government now comes in. We've streamlined everything to the federal executive.
These are content neutral regulations for a pandemic. I doubt any court would strike it down.

No....this shouldn't even be a question.  And gun stores shouldn't be exempt either...lots of dumb going around these days.  Lines don't get much more clear than the ones in this situation.  Stay home and/or away from people.

Texas governor issued a stay at home order yesterday. Here’s the relevant text:

In accordance with guidance from DSHS Commissioner Dr. Hellerstedt, and to achieve the goals established by the President to reduce the spread of COVD-19, every person in Texas shall, except where necessary to provide or obtain essential services, minimize social gatherings and minimize in-person contact with people who are not in the same household.

“Essential services” shall consist of everything listed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in its Guidance on the Essential Critical Infrastructure Workforce, Version 2.0,
plus religious services conducted in churches, congregations, and houses of worship.

For those that read my post earlier the thread, I should say I voted no, churches should not be exempt. I think Ramsay Hunt Experience posted the relevant constitutional provisions in another thread. I'm just awfully conscious about the restriction of movement and services. This would seem to be exigent circumstances and content-neutral, if I might borrow from other doctrines.

I think this should absolutely be done at the State level. However, the Federal Govt should be meeting with them and saying, "get your f----- act together and shut #### down."

Yes and yes. The President should be using his bully pulpit (remember that term? How appropriate here) to convince, cajole, arm twist, whatever have you to get states to shut down. Otherwise, we'll be inside through July or August at this rate.

I'm still stunned people are flouncing about while the death rate continues to toll mightily to most of us.

You knew it was coming, right?

“Our safety is at stake,” he added, “since national disobedience of God’s laws brings danger and diseases, such as coronavirus, but obeying God brings covenant protection. … God protects the USA from danger as the country repents of LGBT, false gods, abortion and other sins.”  Steven Andrew USA Church
“In our days, man thinks he is God, that he is the master and can decide what is good and bad, something which is called moral relativism or postmodernism,” wrote Aviner on the Kipa news website.

“If this is the case, that mankind is proud, mankind knows everything, understands everything, let us see you fight the smallest of God’s creations. This creation is called corona, a crown,” he continued.
“The true meaning of the epidemics is a trial from Almighty Allah and a punishment. A trial for the believers and a punishment for the sinners,” said the preacher, whose name was not publicized, according to a translation by the Palestinian Media Watch organization.

“If the epidemic harms non-believers from among the abusers and the aggressors, then that is punishment.  This virus is one of Almighty Allah’s soldiers, and he is unleashing it on those who attack his believers.”

God help us all.

When this is over, my level of "I'm gonna do whatever the hell I want and dont give a #### about how it affects anyone else" is going to be SKY HIGH.
