Circumventing the Salary Cap (1 Viewer)

I was reading TMQ's follow up this week and someone suggested that Manning should not do any more commercial endorsements until he wins the Super Bowl.

My thought was, why not do even more?

What if Manning's agent arranged with potential free agents that would love to play for Indy put were not "affordable" due to the cap, and offered joint commercial endorsements with Peyton as an added incentive? Manning - assuming he wants to win badly enough - could take a very small portion of the fee, allowing the free agent acquisition to take the lion's share.

Manning certainly doesn't need the money.

Players lobby other players to join there team all the time. Why wouldn't this work even better?

Hey kupcho1, this seems to be a hot button for TMQ. We discussed this back in late December:

IndyHavoc thread

Leave to us fantasy heads to recognize a good loophole when we see one.

Well, then KG and AI shouldn't do any commerical endorsements until they win an NBA championship, either. Same with Alex Rodriguez and winning a World Series.

I forgot about the biggest endorser in the history of sports that won absolutely nothing - she played tennis and was kind of hot. I forgot her name...initials were A. K. I think...

I am pretty sure this outlined somewhere in the CBA. There was a time I was wondering the following possibility. What if Torry Holt signed a 7-year contract with the Colts with no signing bonus and a minimum annual salary. The following week, the Bill Polian interviewed candidates for a new secratry (sp??) and hired Mrs. Torry Holt for 56 million.

However, in your example I think it could work. The only thing the possible free agent losses is security; his paycheck is largely dependent on a hand shake with Peyton Manning.

Why couldn't a legally binding contract be involved?

The NFL has specific rules about this. If that scenario happened, you can bet the head office would be all over it.

Because such a document could be used in an investigation.

Actually, I think the solution is to have Manning do MORE commercials and endorsements and then take LESS for a salary. Tom Brady effectively did this for New England. He cashed in on endorsement deals, so taking less than market value for a salary didn't make a dent in his pocketbook.

Basically Manning did the same thing, the only difference is Tom Brady has no say in what the Patriots do with the extra money.
