Cleveland Looking to Trade Up To #1 (1 Viewer)

I don't think the Rams will do it. It could be a smoke screen by Holmgren who might be looking for McCoy or Clausen.

(RotoWire) The Browns are reportedly interested in moving up from the No. 7 draft slot to take Bradford, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Analysis: The Rams, who currently hold the top overall pick in next week's draft, need a franchise QB in the worst way, so this is a long-shot. But if the Browns wowed then with a great deal, a signal-caller like Jimmy Clausen would be an option at No. 7, or possibly Colt McCoy later on. Both are good prospects, who would command a lot less money than Bradford would as the fist overall selection.

Would be strange, but I remember when the Jets had two #1s in 1995-1996, they chose to trade the pick eventhough they could have used Pace. IIRC, it was that they did not want to be hamstrung with two #1 overall contracts in a row (I do not believe it was due to talent). They did have Jumbo Elliott at the time but (1) he was good, not great and (2) he was 31 in 1996 and no one thought he would start another few years.

odd that holmgren is splattering this all over

some kind of smokescreen, or letting their fanbase they tried to get Bradford so dont freak out when we draft Claussen

The Browns have talked to every team drafting in front of them.

Heckert: Browns have spoken to Rams about top pick

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 15, 2010 12:58 PM ET

The Browns want you to know they are open to all draft day possibilities at quarterback.

Speaking at his pre-draft press conference, G.M. Tom Heckert said the team has talked to the Rams about possibly trading up for Sam Bradford, according to Mark Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

"We're playing a little phone tag,'' said Heckert. "But we've talked to them.''

Before anyone gets carried away, the Browns said they've talked to every team in front of them. President Mike Holmgren cautioned the cost of moving up would likely be prohibitive. "In the real world, we're probably going to go in a different direction," Holmgren said.

One direction Cleveland could go, the team says, is Jimmy Clausen. Holmgren says not to read much into his previous statement that he wish he liked Clausen more.

"I would not read too much into that statement,'' said Holmgren. "Prior to the draft, I'll say any number of things for any number of reasons. When Jimmy came in, we talked about that little statement. I'm not going to tell you why [i said it]. I had my reasons and we'll leave it at that.''

So basically don't listen to anything decision makers say preceding the draft. Got it, thanks.

Well, if St. Louis decides not to go for Bradford at 1.01 and takes Suh and then hopes McCoy is available at 2.01, then I could see Cleveland maybe trying to get Detroit or Tampa Bay to trade with them so they could snag Bradford before Washington (if they still would consider Bradford even though they just got McNabb) or other teams trying to trade up to get Bradford.

If Suh is gone I would not mind Detroit trading down a bit and get some additional picks. But I think if Suh is gone they will just get Okung...

That's classic. I love this time of year!

I got a good laugh out of this too. Holmgren employing the uber double reverse jedi move.

I'm not so sure that if the Rams passed on Bradford that Clausen would not be available with the 1st pick in the second. The Skins have their QB and Cleveland would get Bradford, unless someone jumped ahead of Cleveland to get Bradford. After that it's a free fall for Clausen. Buffalo is a distinct possibility and so is Jacksonville, but if Jacksonville takes him over Tebow they will be vilified. Give me Suh and Clausen all day long. Or give me Cleveland's 7 (Clausen) and the pile of extra picks...
