There are courts in the 90s? she's never played on more due to lower east to upper west commute (the Columbia class travel was a beast) without certainty of even being able to get on them without the usual hours wait.
Yeah, I know recommending a LES to Harlem commute is the kind of thing non-New Yorkers would say to New Yorkers. :ROFLMAO: I definitely know better.

I only mention because I figure a lot of people wouldn't know about them. used to ride the West Side on my bike the length of the island a lot, and they are a ways up there.

About a month ago, my daughter ended her year+ long recruiting journey and committed to a DIII university to play women's ice hockey starting in the Fall of 2025 (I apologize for the book below). :)

We started the process in earnest in the late Spring/early Summer of 2023, at the tail end of her sophomore year. We pulled together a spreadsheet of schools that had women's hockey and had the area of study she wanted (Criminal Justice), put in coaches' names and contact info, and she got to work sending emails to them. I put together some videos showcasing her play, and she put those links into the emails. She did a few exposure camps and tournaments that Summer, and would email the coaches that were going to be there ahead of time to let them know she was going to be there, and coming out of those she started having coaches give her their cell numbers to text and they started setting up calls to get to know her, etc.

She's never been the type of player who is going to skate and stickhandle through 3 girls and laser a shot into the top corner. She's tall, a ferocious forechecker who loves to create offensive zone turnovers by pressuring the other team, does a lot of the dirty work along the boards and in front of the net, and is always looking to set up her linemates. She would regularly score 25-ish goals and have 35-ish assists in a 50 game season, just a good, solid, smart player with a great work ethic and attitude. She always felt like she was getting outshined by the girls who made it look effortless and could score 50+ goals in a season though. In one of the camps she went to that Summer, there was a coach of a top-10 DIII program who reached out to her after the camp (that she hadn't emailed originally because we didn't think that school had a CJ program). In his email he told her that he loved her game and how hard she worked, and it was like a light bulb went on for her. She realized that the way she played had value, and that she didn't need to try and be something she wasn't..that she should focus on making HER game the best it could be. It was like her confidence went through the roof after that.

She decided she wanted to focus on DIII schools early in the process. She was pretty level-headed about knowing that even if she was able to get a DI offer, she was going to be likely a bottom of the roster type of player. She made the decision to focus on DIII because she wanted to play and be able to have a bigger impact on whatever team she eventually went to, which we were totally supportive of.

She got her first offer in October 2023 (at the first school she visited), but obviously wasn't ready to make any decision at that point. Her dream had always been to play college hockey in Boston, but we told her to keep her mind open and encouraged her to visit all kinds of schools (small town, big town, in the middle, etc.), because you never know which campus will make you feel at home from the get-go.

Fast forward to August of this year and she is sitting on 6 different offers to play, seriously considering 3 of them (including UMass-Boston). She liked the coaches, programs, and campuses of all 3, and was planning on doing a final round of visits at each, hoping to make a decision by the end of September, when out of the blue she gets a text from a coach at a school we hadn't even considered asking her how her recruiting was going and if she'd ever consider her school (my daughter had known this coach through camps, etc. since she was 12). They were ranked in the top 15 last year, and top 20 the year before, so my daughter said she'd absolutely be interested. We made plans to visit the campus that Thursday, and the coach and one of the players took us on the tour, and gave her the offer to play there. We go out to eat lunch afterward with our daughter, and ask her what she thought. She looked at us and said.."this is it". That night I was texting with my wife while her and my daughter were visiting family in the area, and she said all our daughter was doing was talking about how great everything was there. I told her if she was sure, she should text the coach that night and tell her she was in. My wife wondered if she should wait, but I disagreed. I said that she had been on enough campus visits (10+), with enough variability in them, where if she says this is the place and the program for her, I don't see any reason to wait. They both agreed and our daughter texted the coach and accepted the offer that night.

The school has a great CJ program (with alumni in high-ranking positions in the FBI, which is what she wants to do), the rink they play in is a practically brand new facility, the locker room and weight rooms they have are insane, she knows and is comfortable with the coach, they are a successful team, we have family less than 30 minutes away from the school, and its about a 2-hour drive from us to the campus. It really couldn't have ended up any more perfect, and it's kind of crazy that after 15 months or so that it all happened so quickly and so out of the blue.

Super proud of her for all the hard work she has put in, and glad she can enjoy her final year of travel hockey and senior year of varsity hockey without having to worry about where she is going to be next year. Although she does understand that the hard work doesn't end here, it's really just starting. I'm looking forward to starting this next chapter as well.
Fantastic story!!! Love reading these. Good luck and much success to her! She is gonna do great.

Finding the right fit is so important.
It really is. Throughout the whole thing I kept telling her to 'trust the process', and if she put in the time and effort that she'd know when the right one came along. So glad it worked out for her.

The hardest part for her was having to tell the other coaches that she was going somewhere else, which I suspected it would be. Some of them put in a ton of time and effort through calls, reviewing video with her, etc., and she felt bad that decided to go elsewhere. I just reminded her that it was part of the process, and they wouldn't take it personally.

And thanks for the well wishes!

Lol... We'd do the commute if there were guarantees. But The city is at a point of saturation. ANYTHING you do needs to be reserved or expect many hours wait... That's gotten way worse in the last 5 years. The handful of tennis courts here are definitely like that... And while I've not been to the ones you mention, I feel pretty confident that they're the same.

Hey, could be worse. You could have decided to get your kid into golf.

100% never burn bridges.

My little guy shot his tourney low yesterday…35 (-1)! I was especially proud because the course has bested him every other time he’s played it in tourneys. His floor has gotten so much higher the last few months, as he’s gotten stronger and learned how to score.

Good momentum heading to the belly of the beast in competitive Jr Golf in 2 weeks…Jupiter, FL…for a big multi-state event.

We go out to eat lunch afterward with our daughter, and ask her what she thought. She looked at us and said.."this is it".
It's funny how sometimes it just feels right in all aspects. It's a big reason why they need to go see lot's of places (even places they don't think they will like). It gives points of reference so when you do find something you like it jumps right out to you.

So happy for you that she had an easy decision and knew what was best for her. Hopefully it lives up to that feeling.

Intersquad game last Friday. This one didn't go quite as well. First think Gally Jr, said when he got on phone. I didn't even record an out but I pitched much better than that.

  • 1st Batter: Got up 1-2 on a couple good change ups and a back door cutter. Threw another good change down and away to the LH hitter and he was able to flick the bat out to it and flare it over SS head. Ugh
  • 2nd Batter: Another LH batter. First pitch CB and he dribbled it through the 5-6 hole.
  • 3rd batter: Another LH batter. Got the count to 2-2 and then through a back door cutter that he thought caught the corner. The ump (an injured player behind the pitching mount) called it a ball. Threw another cutter on the full count pitch. Thought it caught more of the plate and ump called it a ball for a walk.
  • 4th batter: Got him to weakly hit a ground ball to first baseman who looked to 2nd base but decided it against. By the time he flipped to Gally Jr covering first it was too late.
  • 5th batter: Worked count full and wanted to throw a change but catcher called for cutter. Still new to pitch clock he didn't want to shake off and risk a violation so threw the cuttter and just missed. Another walk
  • 6th batter: Worked another full count and same thing happened. Wanted to go off speed and catcher called for cutter. Didn't shake off and got squeezed again.

He said he got quite a few swing and misses. Nobody hit the ball hard and he thought he had a couple borderline pitches go against him. The put it in perspective on how crazy three walks for him is, he had a total of 10 walks last year in 80 innings. The year before 17 walks in 85 innings. It just doesn't happen. That frustrated him. But he said trying to work to the pitch clock, not being on the same page as the catcher, and trying to change his starting position on the rubber has him thinking about a lot of things. He felt he threw well and didn't get the results he deserved with how well he pitched. Sometimes that happens.

On the bright side, he said the balls were flying all over the place. There were multiple innings with back to back homers and one inning where they hit back to back to back to back homers. So at least that didn't happen to him.

I told him this was good opportunity to talk to the pitching coach and catcher about pitch sequencing and how to minimize the time for shaking off if he wants to throw something else. Go to the coaches to show his thought process and learn how they handle that. Hopefully he does that to show his thought process and how he is trying to improve.

All in all a frustrating outing but he felt his stuff plays at that level and that he can get swings and misses and outs. So some encouragement.

At the plate he went 0-2 (rolled over a 1-2 breaking ball instead of trying to go the other way and hit one on the screws right at the SS) Not great but not terrible.

He is also going to find out that now he is playing in the top 7% level and facing much better and more disciplined hitters.

It’s an adjustment…..he will get there.

In the meantime Todem Jr is playing his first two intra squads Wednesday and Thursday.

Will report back with how it went.

He is also going to find out that now he is playing in the top 7% level and facing much better and more disciplined hitters.
For sure. It's why i was happy to hear him say that he was getting a lot of swing and misses and that it gave him a confidence boost to confirm that his stuff will be fine at this level.

So some of you may know Todem Jr’s home field is the USA Baseball National Training Facility in Cary NC. A beautiful place to play baseball.

Due to inclement weather they moved their 1st Fall intra-squad indoors into USA Baseballs new training center. They have a full indoor field inside which is pretty awesome.

He batted lead off and played all 9 innings at SS.

Defensively he told me he put on a clinic making two highlight reel put outs on dribblers by our CF who is a speed demon by flicking darts across his body to nail him both times. One was a slow roller in front of him and another a play up the middle. The rest were routine.

1st AB 1st pitch he hit a missile that found leather in LC.

2nd AB he rolled over a pitch for a ground out.

3rd AB he battled back from 0-2 to walk, steal second and score

4th AB he battled back from 1-2 to walk, steal second again and score.

0-2 2BB 2SB 2R

Productive day getting on base and scoring 2 runs in a 6-4 win.

He also told me in the last two i innings they moved over the senior SS to 3B had Todem Jr at SS and had the senior 2B in his usual 2B spot. A preview potentially of the starting infield.

Great sign for him.

Head coach talked with him after the intrasquad and told him to be ready to play every position on the field except 1B, C and P. “I want your bat in the lineup as much as possible”.

That was music to his ears. I feel like with two seniors ahead of him at SS and 2B he will get starts at SS and 2B in plenty of double headers, mid week games etc and in conference games he will be in LF, 2B, 3B etc…..and who knows….he could win the starting SS job outright and they slide the incumbent senior SS (who is 24 years old mind you) to 3B like they did last night.

I asked him does he feel like he has shown he is “the guy” at SS and he confidently told me in his opinion he feels like the best glove in the MIF….period. And he feels like his bat will prove to be very strong if given regular and consistent AB’s every game.

So as always it comes down to production at the plate and I feel
confident if he gets the AB’s the production will be there in spades. His off season was fantastic and his strength and speed improved again. 170 pounds now of all muscle. His arm has also seen a drastic improvement from high school. Late bloomer story indeed.

It’s early in the Fall but he is off to a great start. His coaches love him and constantly engage with him. That’s all you can ask for.

Next two Intrasquad outings....both went 1-2-3.

First outing he go a routine fly out to CF followed by a full count walk (don't like that being his 4th walk in 3 innings) but followed up the walk with a ground ball to 2B for a double play.

Next outing also went 1-2-3 with two pop outs to 1B and a routine ground out to 2B on 8 pitches. He said he felt dominate and wish they kept him out there for another inning.

So in his 4 innings thus far he has had one ball hit hard off him and that turned into a ground ball double play. Has 2 K's and 4 BB's and only one out to the OF (which is good in Colorado.....fly balls have a tendency to become HR's). He hasn't gotten a ton of feedback from the coaches thus far.

Intrasquad 2

Started at SS and hit lead off again.
The kid went 2-4
1st AB 3-1 count sat on a cookie and crushed a ball off the LC wall for a stand up double.
2nd AB he went down swinging.
3rd AB he blasted a first pitch middle in fastball to deep CF that went over the CF and hit the bottom of the 400 foot wall....it careemed away and by the time the OF picked it up he was half way to 3rd and had a stand up in the park HR.
4th AB a lineout to CF.

Made all his plays at SS where he played for 7 innings. Played the last 2 innings in CF with one routine flyball.

Game 3 today.

Starting at SS and batting 2nd today.

Off to a great start this fall.

Lol my daughter tells me nothing about her intrasquads. I think she is 2-4 with 2ks, 2bbs and a double. Been playing ss, 2b and LF.

I fear she's starting to not care as much anymore. I say this because she not working out on her own anymore and hanging more with friends. Still doing all the team lifts etc.

Actual scrimmages this Saturday so we'll see.

Hopefully starting the last 13games as a freshman gives her a little leg up

It's her second year. Intersquads aren't that big of deal anymore....hahahha

Also, I had to look up the difference between "inter" and "intra". Always been interchangeable to me. I guess "inter" is when the overall team is divided up into two distinct teams to play while "intra" is a modified game where players are shifting between teams during the scrimmage. The more you know.

We use these terms at work a lot but outside that...
Intrasquads - Intra is games Internal to the team.
Intersquad is basically a scrimmage with another team(s) but like a group practice where it's our school team vs yours but we might set up scenarios with base runners etc and not a true scrimmage. Either way inter is between 2 separate entities. Or just a regular scrimmage

That's how I always understood it

At work Intra is any communication within our facility. Inter is communication with another facility

Think intranet and Internet

Well I better use the correct term LOL.

They split up the roster into two distinct teams so I should say Intersquad.

No lol Intra is a scrimmage within your own team. You are correct!!@!@!@

Not according to the interwebz. I googled "what is the difference between intrasquad and intersquad" and they gave me the definition I used above. I suppose "inter" could also be a scrimmage against a different team as well.

So I suppose most of the outings so far have been "intra" with only the first being "inter" vs another school.

Learn something new every day. I guess I can stop for the day now.

It's not intermurals lol
Intra division vs inter division

I think people have been using the term wrong for years and it's just one of those things that is accepted at this point

So if you are scrimmaging another team you just say scrimmage and the others got intertwined to be within your own

But the true definition is intra is internal , inter "external"

Good learnings today 😂

Never been in this thread before because my kids are grown and I have 9 grandkids. Just had to venture in and talk about my 13 year old grandson. He started running cross country this year in Pennsylvania. So far he has won every race he has been in by a wide margin. The only ones that have beaten him were high school kids. He did enter one Spartan race and was leading by a wide margin near the end when he passed out while carrying sand bags running uphill. He was fine later and then learned the sandbags were for older runners. My wife and her brothers were also runners, so I guess it runs in the family.

I will post this here as college recruiting comes up a lot....

I just watched a video of a D1 coach (it didn't say which college) talking about recruiting to a group of what I will assume was a bunch of HS athletes. He stated that they use to sign 3 safeties and 4 corners every year from HS. Now, they sign 1 safety and 2 corners from HS and the rest they look at transfers. As a result of that, they are even more picky and have a list of things that would get you cut from consideration that they may have been more flexible with before. Bad grades, missing team activities, any hint of anything less than a great attitude, etc.

D2 and D3 schools are basically becoming farm systems for D1 schools with the transfer portal. Not surprising as I think we all kind of expected that to happen but it was interesting to hear from a D1 DB coach talk about how it has changed how they recruit with not only the number of HS athletes but it isn't just that they go out and get the best HS athlete they are looking for any reason to cut you from consideration and then look at the best athlettes.

Nothing major to report

Had scrimmage (intersquad ;) ) against 2 other schools. Played LF and batted first. First AB jammed dinker to third. Second AB end of bat to SS reached on error (throw took 1b off bag), third AB fooled on change up ground out to third

Second game played SS the whole game. Deep fly out to RF, fisted a ball down the Rf line for a double, hard ground ball to second.

Not great but started slow last year, it will come, just timing

Had an over the shoulder catch, a sweet shorthop scoop tag on a SB attempt, runner called safe but great play and last inning basesloaded tying run on second runner on first 1out. Ground ball 2b doesn't cover second she turns and gets the lead a third.

Next batter pops out game over for the W

Not her best hitting day but the ball was in play

13yo Flopping had a couple UTR match play matches at John Macenroes facility here. UTR is a ranking system based on expected games (not matches) won vs your opponent based on both of your rankings. They match people up- age and gender aside- purely on those rankings. She's played grown *** men, HS kids as well as little boys and the occasional girl.

Ill preface by saying that place has been cursed for her... Shes never won there in 10 or so matches and she finds different, more and more frustrating (for both of us) ways to lose.

I asked her what her plan was going in... Crickets. Ok.. go for your first serve (she may have turned a corner with it in practice and needed to test it) and try to gain the advantage in each point. It's telling that she has no plan and gets reflected in how she plays- tennis is as much a mental game as physical.

In warmups and up 40-0 in the 2nd game of the first match, I know she's going to crush this equally aged boy- shes just stronger and technically better... And doing what we talked about with good success. I didn't see how he was going to even take a single game from her. And then... The wheels fall off and she loses that game and every other game after. The kid could only kinda slice/push her shots back to her but had decent control and a really consistent lob. Which she fell for over and over and over and over. Never realized she should stop coming to the net. The boy ceded advantage to her in points (until the lob) because he had nothing in his game besides that to win points, but as soon as things went south she tightened up swinging the racket and hit her shots softer and shorter, allowing him back into points.

She hit her first serve well, and the kid would meekly return short. So while she technically was doing the things we had talked about the advantage we talked about her getting, she's never then actually translate the advantage into winning points. Something to work on. Floppinha walked off fuming, in tears and never wanting to play at "this cursed place" again. Talked her down and back into the court.

2nd match was against a boy a little older I watched on the next court who hit hard and was overall pretty good. I was expecting a blood bath. Couldn't see more than half the court, so it was hard to tell what was going on... But I could see floppinha was serving well and seeing the racket freely at least. Off the shnide finally, and won 4-1, 4-1.

Has a lesson tonight... A lot to talk through for that.

Intersquad Friday. Since Gally Jr pitched an inning on Tuesday he got to hit and play 2B. He went 2-3 with two singles (first two hits of the fall.....now 2 for 7) and RBI and made the play on the one grounder he got. He also turned a 5-4-3 double play that he said he was happy with. Slowish hit ball and really had to come across and throw "on the run" to get the turn done quick enough and beat the guy at first by half a step.

Uneventful 3rd intrasquad last Thursday.

Started at SS (batted 2nd) and played 7 innings outta 9 got 3 AB’s 2 walks and a line out right at the 3B. He told me it was a laser.

Got one routine grounder.

He is very pleased so far. Says he is seeing the ball really well, and his adjustment from last season as a freshman to his now second year is far better pitch recognition at the college level. He has been a very tough out and is laying off pitches a lot better now.

He has two games this week.

Intrasquad game yesterday. The coaches planned to have each pitcher throw 30-ish pitches so they could/should go more than an inning. Gally Jr came in with 2 outs and a runner on 2B. Got the batter to pop out on the infield. He proceeded to pitch two more innings with no baserunners for a total of 2.1 innings..........on only 17 pitches. The pitching coach told him after his 2nd inning that he was only at 17 pitches but he was taking him out because he was eating up too many innings and he wanted to get more pitchers some work and they were running out of innings. Hahahaha.

He said there were a couple hard hit balls including one he thought was going to be a HR to right. He said it was one of their better hitters that always drives the ball to RF. So he wanted to pound him in on the hands. Unfortunately he threw a FB that leaked over the middle and the guy hit it on the screws. He figured it was gone but ended up being right at the RF for an out. The other hard hit ball was a 3-1 FB that was a one hop smash to the SS for an out. Otherwise it was end of bat nubbers or pop outs.

He was happy with the outing but wished he could have gotten up to the 30 pitch mark. But so far he has pitched 5.1 innings, with 4 walks, 2 K's, 2 H (both singles) and 2 R. Not bad for the Colorado launching pad. I have no idea how he is comparing to the other guys but it seems like he is having a solid showing for a freshman "preferred walk on". He is also 2 for 7 at the plate with no errors at 2B.

This weekend my daughter played her first hockey games since the end of August, after another girl drove her head into the glass/stanchion by the bench as she was carrying the puck up the boards in the last game of a showcase.

Her team was ranked (via myhockeyrankings.com) as the #1 team in the country for their Tier and age group this past week. I know those rankings aren’t worth the paper they are printed on/computer screen they are displayed on, but was still fun to see. They played a prep school Friday and Saturday, and got humbled pretty quick although they did have some good stretches of play in both games. The prep school has like 10 D1 commits, including both goalies, and we were shorthanded missing a full line of good players, so it wasn’t a surprise. At this point we want her playing the best competition she can as she gets ready for her D3 college hockey next season (and to stay healthy).

Sunday they got back on track with 2 wins against a team in their own Tier, and she had a goal and an assist. Would have had 2 goals, she ripped a shot on a breakaway that was going top corner, but somehow the goalie got the knob of her stick on it to just deflect it over the net. Was great to watch her come flying off the bench on line changes again, putting pressure on the D behind their own net, causing turnovers, and playing her game. By the start of the 2nd period in the first game, you could hear the other team’s coaches screaming “one coming hard!!” every time she came off the bench. :lmao:

She took some bumps, gave a few herself, and came through with no ill effects, which was a big relief. 5 more games coming up this weekend.

Is this HS or club?

Sounds like a great return from a scary injury/incident. Loved hearing the coach screaming about her... That's awesome

Club/Travel hockey, or Rep for our Canadian friends. Varsity HS hockey starts up in November for her.

Yeah, we are grateful that it wasn't worse. She even commented about the other coach yelling like that after the game, I told that's how she knows she was doing something right. Lol.

Intrasquad last night

Started and played CF and batted leadoff, played all 9.

Made all his plays including a web gem going back on a well hit shot to CF....tracked it down...over his right shoulder catch. Hosed a guy at 3B with a laser throw from CF, a nice long hop to nail him.

At the plate:
1-1 with a lead off 2B down the RF line.
2 BB
2 SB
2R

Great night.

He has another tonight. He will be again leading off and playing all 9 at SS. His outstanding fall continues and I have little doubt he is a regular starter this Spring. He will be playing SS/2B/CF/LF his hard work this off-season is paying off in spades.

We played Northwood, in Lake Placid.

She verbally committed to Utica University for next Fall. Pre-season poll has them ranked as #13 this year, she can't wait to get out there next year.

Never been (Utica did not have a team when I played college hockey) but I have heard the facility is great...on the boy's side of things I know it is considered one of the better environments in D3...my school played there a few years ago and they said it was like playing minor league hockey...where else did she look?

Haven't checked in here in awhile...

Son is still playing flag football. About a month (maybe 3 weeks?) back, he had a crappy game. He wasn't feeling well, maybe shouldn't have even played, but he just wasn't into it. Stopped running on a play where he and his defensive cohorts were chasing a ball carrier who had yet to get their flag pulled. Coach yelled at him for giving up. Should have won that game, but a few fluke deep bombs beat us.

Fast forward to the following Friday, where I ended up taking my daughter to a volleyball clinic and the domestic partner took my son to his flag football game. As we usually do, she and I started to text once things get going, and she proceeds to tell me that he had two flag pulls in the first quarter alone, and then another two before halftime. For him, that's a lot. I was unsure if my wife knew what she was talking about LOL. But yeah, he had a hell of a game.... and what made it even better is that he didn't get down on himself (something we've kind of come to expect with him, unfortunately) after a bad effort the prior week.

We actually get a revenge game against the team he did poorly against this Friday, but unfortunately the coach that handles the defensive side of the ball will be out of town, so we'll see how it goes.

--------

As for the daughter, I think I mentioned she - on a whim - tried out for her 8th grade basketball team... and made it. This, with limited basketball experience. Being an accomplished volleyball player, she is a hustler and is quite athletic, so yeah... she made the team. I was on a business trip during her first game, but got videos from the wife showing her bustin' her ***, running and defending well.

She has a game again tonight that I am leaving work early for. She's told me not to expect much this time around 'cuz the opponent is the best team in the league. I just told her to keep hustling and things will work themselves out. Working in different sports is key... her absolute love is volleyball and she will (hopefully) make the 8th grade team this coming season, and has club/travel ball to look forward to next month as well. Supposedly school teams aren't even the way to go these days; aren't really looked at by scouts much, etc.... it's all about club/travel ball.

That's awesome, where did you play?

She had offers from 7 schools in total, came down to Utica, SUNY Potsdam, UMass - Boston, and Chatham in the end. Was a tough choice, as they all had great coaches and she liked where they were taking their hockey programs, but Utica felt like "it" to her when everything was taken into consideration. The facility is fantastic.

Excellent on both counts. Good on your son for bouncing back in a positive manner, and best of luck to your daughter. Always love to see kids get out of their comfort zone and have the courage to try something new.

I played at Trinity...the boys lost to Hobart in the National Title game last year...Hobart was as good of a D3 team as I have ever seen...real big and fast...hard to believe it was D3, looked like the freakin' NHL (probably because they are older than a lot of pro's)...Trinity hosted the Final 4 and it was a great event...I'm not familiar with Chatham, what is that school like? I see Norwich is on the Utica schedule...my niece plays there although she is a senior this year so they won't cross paths...that's another great rink. What did you think of UMass-Boston...they are in the Little East Conference (which is expanding big time in hockey with Norwich, Babson and NEC joining and West Conn and Keene adding hockey as well)...my son plays lax at Plymouth State which is also in the Little East...UMB has come a long way recently...they are doing a good job over there...congrats on Utica...nothing better than your kid playing a college sport...it is an amazing experience for the whole family...hope you live close to the campus...there's a lot of long rides in upstate New York hockey.

That's awesome, where did you play?

She had offers from 7 schools in total, came down to Utica, SUNY Potsdam, UMass - Boston, and Chatham in the end. Was a tough choice, as they all had great coaches and she liked where they were taking their hockey programs, but Utica felt like "it" to her when everything was taken into consideration. The facility is fantastic.

D3 is pretty darned good hockey, on both the men and women's side. Seeing quite a few D1 players moving to D3 in the portal this year.

Chatham is a small private school in Pittsburgh. Absolutely picture perfect campus. She loved UMass Boston, and I agree on the progress they have made. She had always said her dream was to play college hockey in Boston (our whole family loves it there, and she and I are huge Bruins fans), so I honestly thought when she got an offer there that's what she would pick, so was a little surprised when she said Utica wa "it", but the total package of the coach, their Criminal Justice program, the facilities, the campus, and us having some family in the near area swayed her, I think.

The campus is a little less than 2 hours from our house, so it works out well. Beats 5 hour drives to Boston or Pittsburgh, and the 3.5 hour drive to Potsdam, so we'll take it.

Good luck to your niece and son in their seasons!
