Commish/league question - what would you do or suggest (1 Viewer)

Basically we have a rule which we have played by for years, has not changed, everyone understood etc - but was not accurately reflected in our written rules this year (this is what happens when you hire a secretary for her looks). Someone challenged it, but since nobody really cared all that much, I just made the call and nobody made a big thing about it (not even the challenger).

But if this was something more important - esp if it came up during the year and made a real diff - it could have started a major whizzing contest.

So I guess this is to say first make sure your rules cover all the bases and accurately reflect what you intend - but also, in such a situation, what do you think should be done, ie:

1 - follow the written word

2 - follow what everyone knows to be the understood way

3 - commish makes call (totally unfair IMO)

4 - vote (seem fairest to me but I hate voting on every little freakin thing)

5 - drink until everyone forgets all about it

Course 5 is best but then people sober up and some yutz might remember and start it up all over again....

The written rules are the definitive source; unless someone can prove that the written rules are wrong, I would stick with enforcing those. People's memories are not very good, especially considering how many people play in multiple leagues and may be getting confused about which rules are which.

Great, but then we haven't solved the issue.

Not us - most are 1-2 leagues tops. Re. "proof" again it's a rule we all know has been the rule for years. I guess that's what I/we are trying to figure out, what should be the definitive way to go. Just when you think you have all the bases covered...

You technically should go by what is written. If the league rules are missing something big, then you take a league vote for that situation, and make sure you add it in writing for the future. It's a P.I.A. but for my league I have every little rule in writing on the website. I run a dynasty league, and we have had some owners come and go. To be consistent you must have everything possible in writing, or you will be faced with a lot of questions and problems at some point during the season.

I am in a dynasty league that is similiar where the rules are more understood than legalistic. We may have like one page of the important stuff written down, but generally operate that everyone understands the rules. I suggest operating that everyone understands unless there is a serious issue where you then go to written law.

BTW, in the 4 years this league has been together there have been only a couple things that mildly could called a dispute and those were resolved quickly.

The game is fantasy football, but it's very easy to turn the game into "let's find a loophole." Leagues shouldn't try to cover every aspect of every situation in the rules. You'll never do it. Adults know what's right and what's not-- most of the time, anyway.
