Commish Question (1 Viewer)

Don't Noonan

Footballguy
I am commish for a long time league with several friends.  We don't have any league rules per say and just follow the rules of the website.  There are several teams competing for the last few playoff spots and this week is obviously important to the standings.  I can see two teams that are out of playoff contention have players hurt and listed as out in their line up.  These teams are playing teams who are fighting to get in the playoffs.  Should I tell them to make a competitive line up?

We do have a weekly high score prize money to try and keep these guys active.

I would suggest they put in a competitive lineup IMHO.

Agree with the above. Also to add in the league I commish after we had this problem going on the following year we put in a rule that if two weeks in a row teams weren’t touching their roster the commish would put in the best player available at the position based off total points YTD. I know some won’t agree with that decision but it was voted on and approved and helps a lot as we were having the issue for a few years with teams being out of it and ignoring their lineups.  And yes we could drop them and find someone else but the league is 20+ years running and is all family and friends. Just an idea that may work for your league too next year and beyond.

100%. Im the commission of my main league since 1999. And to combat this problem we’ve always required teams to field competitive lineups till the end, if they are negligent in that in someway I’ll adjust their lineups accordingly. This almost never happens, as if I was having to do that they’d get booted from the league, but that’s the rule in place

You should contact them for sure.  It makes for a better league and that is what a commish wants.  Just a simple nudge to remind them they need to tend to their team and would want others to so if they were fighting for a playoff spot.

I commish a 10+ year league of old co-workers.  Everyone has families/kids/jobs/other leagues/whatever so it's not uber-competitive.  We all throw $40 in at the start of the year, pay the top 2, and a $10 weekly high score payout.

A couple of years ago in the offseason I put out an email to everyone that basically said I am not your babysitter, I'm not going to check all 12 owners teams and set a lineup for you, the least you can do is take 5 minutes on Sunday morning and swap out inactive players. If it happens here or there fine, nobody's gonna get mad but if you start a bye or injured player two weeks in a row, then I lock your team and it costs you another buy-in to get it back.  In the last ~5  years I've had to lock 3 teams, twice they paid another $40 and apologies, claimed they were busy/traveling/sick kid/whatever, and one guy said "eh screw it, I'm not into it anymore anyway" so we replaced him.

IMO it's not the commish's job to hawk every team and have to chase someone down 10 minutes before kickoff to say "you know this guy is Out right?".  Put the onus on them.

Were these same players out this past weekend and left in the lineup? have they just not set their lineup for this week? I mean it's Wednesday

if you let people injured in lineups all year you can't change it the last week

The guy started Freeman (ATL) last week.  Granted, Freeman may play this week.  However, he hasn't made any roster moves in 2 weeks and has guys on his bench right now who should be in starting line up.

So my point is if it's happened all season that may have affected other outcomes you have to let it go shrug

Gotcha.  I don't believe it has happened all season just the past few weeks once he was eliminated from playoff contention.
He/she needs to get a warning shot across the bow about getting the boot (unless of course some major life event has happened for him/her).  Leagues with inactive players or ones who disengage are the worst and it effects everyone else.

I would definitely remind the people involved but I would not touch someone else's line-up. Hands off is not always optimal in every situation but I would rather be consistent.

True, but as a commish if you notice something that could throw off the competitive balance then you should bring it up to the league.

Exactly how i handle things

I hear what you're saying and in theory I agree.  Before I instituted the "lock your team and you pay to get it back" rule, this is what happened at least once a year:

  • Team A completely ignores their lineup for the week and starts Gurley and Lockett on bye.  Takes two zeroes and hands Team X an easy win.  -- Obviously someone (commish) should say something to Team A before this happens if it's noticed.
  • Team B has Alshon in his flex, he's Q and playing on Thursday, and B misses that he's ruled out 2 hrs before gametime so he takes a zero when he could (and probably would) have swapped him out had he been a Sunday player.  Alshon's zero helps give Team Y a win.
  • I have 4 leagues of my own to chase Q and O players, I don't have the time to go figure out who owns Alshon and make sure they see the news.  But if I don't chase down Team B's owner to tell him about Alshon's O status before gametime, now I've got Team X griping because he's battling against Team Y for a playoff spot and now Y is likely to win, and since I screwed him out of a win by warning Team A then I should warn B too.  Now I feel responsible for checking everyone's team all week long and spend my Sunday morning texting 8 different people with injury rulings.

We have a $5 penalty for each player you start on a bye or each player that's listed as OUT before game time and is in your lineup.  If a guys questionable all week and a last minute scratch that's not subject to penalty.  Haven't had an issue since we put that rule in a few years back.

I tried to put in a similar rule but the penalties were going to be much higher $25 for out and $50 for bye players.  I proposed it that way because I wanted it to be a significant deterrent and because many people have been #####ing about it happening too much.  Unfortunately they wouldn't put their money where their mouth was and voted it down because it was too much money.  To give the costs some perspective, the entrance fee is $200 and each free agent costs $5 or $10 depending on the method of acquisition (some teams rake up $150 in free agent fees.....one team is at $300).

I understand the dilemma.  Been there many times....you are in a no win situation for sure.

Funny thing in our league this week. One of the bottom feeders, who is usually always great about setting his team, did not this week and had 3 players out. He still beat our 2nd seeded team this week.
