Commissioner dilemma (1 Viewer)

One owner in our redraft league has possession of our 17 yr old league trophy and is refusing to give it back. Tradition is that you have it engraved with the new champion and bring it to the draft party where it will change hands to the new owner. He won it in 09 and failed to bring it to this years draft. This week he has made numerous appointments and promises to return it but has stood me up several times without even a phone call. I am beyond frustrated as a commissioner here. He cannot win the trophy this year but does stand to get a little cash back if he wins the third place

He has gotten raked over the coals on our league message board this season and has never responded. Today I am thinking of dumping his starting roster and locking him out of making any roster movement of any kind until he either returns the trophy or comes clean as some in our league think he may have lost it or it was tossed out by his wife. I out up a poll asking the leagues opinion and there are no nay votes to doing this. Immediately after posting the poll I got another email from the keeper of the trophy with more apologies and promises to return it tomorrow morning.

If he doesn't come through I'm pretty committed to locking up his roster. **** move? Am I overstepping my authority?

The way you're describing the situation, it sounds like you're at the end of your ropes and options are thin. If he doesn't follow through , yes, lock him out. Is he aware that you will do so if he doesn't follow through?

Ultimately, you should give him a clearly defined deadline with clearly defined ramifications for missing it. The deadline should be reasonable and agreed upon by both parties. Do this, and you shouldn't have a problem resolving this, or feel guilty for punishing him.

Edited to add: The quality of this board has gone down so much over the years. Too many smart alec responses and  at legitimate questions.

This trophy has been in the league for 17 years and someone thinks it a #### move to lock the guy out if he doesn't return it?

Hell no. Email him with a deadline or explanation on why he won't return it and then if he doesn't respond by deadline lock him out and find a new owner.

Look, if the wife tossed it or he broke it or lost it, then at least he should come clean about it. Have someone make a new trophy or go buy one and tell him to pony up for the trophy or engraved nameplates or both.

sounds like an episode of The League

Understand that taking a harsh stance will probably ensure you'll never see the trophy again. Maybe you won't anyway, but you'll make it a certainty by doing that.

I would advise taking a different approach: E-mail him privately and say you need to give the champ a trophy. If he lost it of doesn't have it or whatever...it's fine but you need to know so you can make other arrangements. If he has it you need to get it ASAP.

Maybe opening that door will have him come clean as to what happened. Once you get the information you need, feel free to do whatever you want because you know it's gone. If he still has it, maybe you can retrieve it.

But if it's really gone, don't feel bad about doing whatever the league thinks is fair. Maybe there's a way to rationalize losing it or having it thrown out, but there's NO excuse for ignoring you like you're a sleazy bill collector.

Be nice until you get the info you need, or you'll give this jerk an excuse to feel like not giving it back is somehow appropriate. :2cents:

you should have the champion engrave their own name, who cares if its not on there when you hand it to them, engraving ones own name is more motivating to go to the trophy shop. Also if there is no time for an exchange between champs, we just hand it over at the draft the following year. Trophy is just an item, everyone knows who the champ is.

There's no written protocol for something like this. Sounds like he's had more than ample notice and not responded for whatever reason until apparently seeing the public poll and promising its return once again. You've got full democratic support, and likely no other workable options. I wouldn't expect it to be engraved up to date, though.

I doubt he still has it. It must have been stolen, was broken by his girlfriend, sold for crack or something. Who would keep a trophy when they didn't win? Sounds like he's covering up for something.

^This. Good luck and I'd replace him with another owner next season.
Yeah, sounds like a #####. Own up to it, whether you have it or not. Go to his house and punch him in front of his wife and family.

If its a money league, it seems better not to lock him out, but to hope he wins third place and hold his cash in ransom?

At some point wrongful possession becomes a crime. The threat of a police report can do wonders for some people's behavior.

:lmao: "Officer...so this guy won our fantasy football league last season and hasn't turned our trophy over to the new league champion yet. PUT HIM AWAY!"

What exactly do you people do with these trophies anyhow? Do you display them somewhere? Like next to your little league baseball trophies or something?

If he doesn't return the trophy, have the Virginia Tech kicker break intohis house and steal it
dont you mean OJ?

Thanks for all your responses and conversation. I appreciate even hearing from the jackhole trolls to some extent.

I liked the bolded advice and we have now an agreed upon contract by email. He should be here within the hour with the trophy and if he's not here by 6PM I'm benching his players and locking his . I don't care if it's engraved or not, I can do that myself. I have also given thought to just giving the trophy to the winner this week (unless I reclaim it) instead of waiting till next years draft. I'm asking that the trophy should be brought to the draft party but who wouldn't want to do this? Shoving that gleaming cup in the faces of all the other owners is a big part of why we do this stuff in my opinion. Oh and to mboobs: someday maybe you will have friends and associates with whom you have actual contact with other than just cyber friends, maybe then you will understand the significance of a 17 year old cup being passed around.

I'll update later when and if I get the trophy. I suspected he had lost it but now think he's either selfish or a procrastinator or both. Doesn't matter to me as long as the trophy gets here today. Either way we'll bust his balls for this for years to come. :P

Updatery - the cup has landed. I'm currently disinfecting it so I can take a photo with it for our league along with a note to the other owner in the championship game: COME AND TAKE IT.

Thanks for all the support, all's well that ends well I guess.

Glad it worked out.

But for future reference, I wouldn't have locked his team.

If he lost, he lost.

If he wins,'money goes to a new trophy

LOL. Maybe he's not as anal as you, or maybe he's busy. But threatening to lock a guys lineup/ boot him if he's been in the league and therefore more likely a friend for about 20 years seems silly. Relax it's a ####### trophy. Feel free to berate him and mock him. Hell when you get it back reengrave/modify it with something funny where his name would be.But the talk in this thread is ####### ######ed. The season isn't even over and you are 'freaking out' about who has the trophy? WTF?

The season has been over for almost a year. Please go back & actually read the post before telling everyone what blankety-blanks they are.

Egads! He is a procrastinator who had to the nerve to not drop everything in his life and get you the trophy before the season is over. What's the point of taking it back at the draft? During the season (for pics and mocking/#### talking) is the only time it would really even matter.you need to really chill out. a lot.

If the dude isn't going to take the trophy and fantasy football seriously, no one should have the need for him. :fro:
