Concerts thread - FBG's lovin' live music, we're back in action! (3 Viewers)

PSA- don’t let your wife purchase concert tix after you’ve both been drinking for hours.

We now have Hootie and the Blowfish tix for July.

On the plus side, Collective Soul will be there also… 😃
I hope Hootie is better than the last tour. I’m a huge Darius fan. But this show felt like a charity gig from him for the other guys in the band. Wasn’t very good

Yep - also have a couple Hootie tickets. For $25 not a lot to lose.
Well….its an hour and a half drive and a hotel room for us so….lol

Nah, I’m actually looking forward to it it should be fun

Dropped my daughter and her friend off at Railbird. Told them to PM @shuke if they had any issues.

Unfortunately I don’t think he will be there until tomorrow

Correct, we only went Sunday. Wife and I limited it to one day, two would have been too much for her with some ongoing medical issues.

Day was a lot of fun. Some heavy rainfall a few times, but we made the best of it. We saw Brent Cobb, Infamous Stringdusters, Allison Russell, Johnnyswim, Lord Huron, Hozier, and some of Chris Stapleton. We were pretty far back from Stapleton and the sound wasn't that great, so we decided to beat everyone out of there.

Heading to Bonnaroo next week with @Steve Tasker and @UniAlias, will very likely see Isbell but some of my toughest decisions involve Maggie Rogers and Cage the Elephant.

Maggie Rogers is on at the same time as Interpol. I love Interpol but I've seen them 3x and never seen Rogers. Plus I like more songs from the past decade by Rogers, so I'm leaning her way.

Cage the Elephant is the reverse - I've seen them and loved them but they're the same time as the emo Superjam which is a one time only thing and has some pretty big names, so I'll likely see it.

List of shows I may/will see in rough order of priority (if anyone has strong recs here let me know) - I'll probably see 4-6 a day in the end, lots of other stuff going on all the time:

Thursday:
Nation of Language - my #1 for the day, one of my faves of the weekend
Militarie Gun - love them as well and there's not a ton of harder rock on the lineup
Geese - they play a 2 AM show in the campsite that sounds awesome
Happy Landing
Michigander
Pretty Lights - not really my thing but feel like I should check it out
Eggy? - also a campsite show, so sounds fun
Neal Francis - if I'm not feeling the Pretty Lights

Friday: (probably weakest day for me)
Maggie Rogers or Interpol - I hate that they're at the same time, leaning Maggie
Post Malone - headliner, no one else on, he's fine
The Mars Volta - unless I'm hammered (I will be) and want to see T-Pain instead (I might)
The Japanese House
Khruangbin - I know people love them, haven't gotten fully into it. May skip them and go all-in and get in the pit for Maggie
Lizzy McAlpine? - new album is kind of slow, will see how I feel
Faye Webster? - same as Lizzy
T-Pain? (same time as Mars Volta)
GROUPLOVE? (same time as Faye Webster)
Mdou Moctar?

Saturday:
IDLES (missing Parcels and Melanie Martinez to see them, which sucks)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - never seen them, want to hear "Otherside" not on most of their setlists
Emo Superjam or Cage the Elephant - the lineup for Superjam will win me over
Brittany Howard - heard she's so good live
Half Moon Run - Canadian Content
The Maine?
Ethel Cain?
Sean Paul? - Get Busy?
Gregory Alan Isakov? - will depend on the vibe but probably too slow for 7:45, Saturday night, that's like peak of the festival time
Josiah & the Bonnevilles? (same time as The Maine but I can see the Maine later in the summer at another festival)

Sunday:
Chappell Roan (it's going to be absolutely packed)
The Beaches - awesome, Canadian, I love them and they're before Chappell so can hopefully get an ok spot for her
Yves Tumor - love their new album
Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit - never seen him, tried a couple times (covid)
Fred Again.. (not my thing but he's the closing headliner and has grown on me).
Megan Thee Stallion? - not much else on at this time but my twerking game is week
Carly Rae Jepsen? (I love her but I've seen her and would mean missing Yves Tumor)
<sadly missing Milky Chance and Taking Back Sunday because of conflicts?

Mars Volta would be cool too

You have no idea how jealous I am of that Nation of Language show. I missed them when they went through the Midwest last year and whenever I listened to their newest album, I look at my wife and say, "we f***ed up bad not seeing them".

I saw them headline a small club in Toronto in December and it has me even more excited for this one.

Tedeschi Trucks was awesome - especially at a great acoustic venue like the Greek. Really liked Little Feat as the openers. Derek called them "musician's musicians" and I agree. Susan brought out Richard and Cesar from Los Lobos on different songs and they really jammed. Didn't play their hits like Midnight in Harlem and others - lots of jam sessions and some cool covers. Like that they changed it up. Trucks has to be one of the top 5 guitarists out there today.

After reflection, here's my grades and commentary on all of the shows I saw at Bonnaroo. Only scoring acts that I intentionally watched at least a few songs, as opposed to bands where I just wandered by, like Megan The Stallion and Pretty Lights. Official review:

  1. Maggie Rogers - A+. 10/10, no notes. Was on the fence between this and Interpol, as I'd never seen Interpol, but I got drunk and @Northern Voice and I decided to wait in the pit line to end up like 4th row. Totally worth it.
  2. IDLES - A. My second-biggest surprise set of the fest. Truthfully, this is a band I've never been able to get into their studio stuff. They blew me away live, and despite a relatively small crowd, they were the perfect 12:45 - 2 AM rock set to close out Saturday night on the farm.
  3. Chappell Roan - A. The hype is real and it is warranted. She's good.
  4. Post Malone - A. My biggest surprise of the fest. Going to give this one an A. I can't pretend to be familiar with much of his music, but know he's a generally likeable guy so I went into it with an open mind. He's very good. I've found myself listening to his music since the fest has ended.
  5. Dashboard Confessional's Emo Superjam - A-. As advertised on the tin. They played the hits. 4 singalong Dashboard hits. "I"m Not Okay" and "Helena" by My Chemical Romance. Blink-182, Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Weezer, Jimmy Eat World. Taking Back Sunday, At the Drive-In. Could've used a surprise guest or two but it was one of the best superjams I've seen in my 8 years attending Bonnaroo. That said, as a 37 year old man, I was pretty much dead-on the target demo for this superjam.
  6. T-Pain - B+. Speaking of playing the hits. Uplifting presenter, all of the songs were like 60 seconds long, and has spawned the new "T-Pain Playlist", where you only play like 45 seconds of each song on your spotify playlist.
  7. Nation of Language - B+. Needs a little polish, but very bright futures for these guys. Delightful show.
  8. Fred Again... - B+. Also an uplifting showman. I kinda understand the hype with him too. Recommend the show.
  9. Taking Back Sunday - B. I'd heard rumblings that his voice is gone, but I didn't notice it. Played the hits. A fun Sunday sub-headliner, although small attendance.
  10. The Beaches - B. I'm a sucker for Canadians. They probably ended up in the Chappell Roan pit, based on the sounds of their set.
  11. Half Moon Run - B. I'm a sucker for Canadians. They probably weren't in the Chappell Roan pit because they played a day before she did.
  12. Sean Paul - B. Did I mention playing the hits? Huge crowd, only downside is that we were pretty far in the back for this one, but ended up sneaking into the tent toward the end of the set. He had the right temperature.
  13. Japanese House - B. In the pit for this one. She held her own pretty well on Which Stage in the mid-day heat. Looking forward to more from her.
  14. Red Hot Chili Peppers - B-. Truthfully, my least favorite headliner. They sounded fine, but they skipped a couple of their major hits and didn't have much crowd interaction, unlike both Post Malone and Fred Again.
  15. Parcels - B-. My biggest disappointment of the fest. Left the Chilis slightly early to get a 2nd row stage right spot for this one, but they were just soooo slooooow. Ended up bailing for IDLES, and glad I did.
  16. The Maine - B-. Sounded fine. Can't pretend to know much about em. I did get a $5 mystery beer that turned out to be a 9% vodka cocktail that was pretty good. Maybe the highlight of that afternoon.
  17. Infinity Song - B-. Also veryyyyy slooooow but I am excited for the potential from this group. Very unique sound and clearly talented musicians, but very raw. Going to be keeping an eye on them.
  18. Michigander - B-. He was fine, nice little fest opener on Thursday. Was very excited to be there and I like his sound. Looking forward to his future albums too.
  19. Say She She - C+. Was excited for this one, the 60s girl group sound. Don't know that it really translated to the farm.
  20. Bonny Light Horseman - C+. Knew absolutely nothing about them, only went on a whim because Northern Voice recommended it. They were fine. Maybe not my cup of tea but they sounded fine.
  21. Militarie Gun - C+. Ran out of music like halfway through the set, and the lead singer's voice went. Then they brought out my guy Dan Spencer (?) for some songs. Fun and lively but nothing to write home about it.
  22. Gwar - C. I don't know what the **** to say about this one but I figured I had to give it a shot. They decapitated Benjamin Netanyahu during the set and sprayed his blood all over the crowd.
  23. Neal Francis - Francis' Comes Alive - C-. Something about this guy rubs me the wrong way.
  24. The Mars Volta - D. I don't get it, sorry. Bailed pretty quickly for T-Pain and glad I did.

My top seven shows would be these exact same in whatever order, plus Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit who I got in the pit for in a surprisingly low attended show (considering proximity to Nashville and him being a bit of a Bonnaroo staple) - I didn't see Taking Back Sunday as a result and I was too tired for GWAR, otherwise we were at all the shows together.

Maggie Rogers #1 for sure. I knew she had a great voice and great songs, I didn't know what a great performer she was.

I might move The Beaches up the list too but being like 8 rows back in a tent escaping the crippling heat surrounded by my fellow countrymen (and a bunch of people from Buffalo) might have enhanced my enjoyment of that one.

Emo Superjam had a weird encore fake out where it really seemed like one was coming but it never did.

I started near the front for IDLES and quickly found my way towards the back, probably for the best. That was a hell of a circle pit.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed T-Pain. Sean Paul underwhelmed me a bit by comparison.

T-Pain 50 second Spotify setlist is a lot of fun, though Tasker neglected to say that said setlist at the campsite was all 80s power ballads - build up, one big chorus, on to the next song. T-Pain covered Don't Stop Believin' so inspiration still fits. I think our neighbors particularly liked this part of the weekend.

RHCP needed to realize they were headlining Bonnaroo on Saturday night and play more hits. How do you leave Scar Tissue and Otherside off the list? And they don't play from non Frusciante albums (which is fine), so it was like Can't Stop, By The Way, Zephyr Song, Californication and a whole bunch of random stuff until the Under the Bridge/Give it Away encore. By contrast Post Malone as Friday headliner was just a big fun party setlist.

Chappell Roan is a supernova. Pretty sure half her fanbase is insane but the songs are so good.

I blew out a tire on the way down and had to stop a few hours from home I was so tired on the way back, so the trip both ways was the hardest yet for me but the 4+ days at the festival were the easiest yet.

We drank from 10 AM or so every morning and were camped in the absolute boondocks of plaza 10 and it was 100 degrees every day but... We never really had issues with lines or heat or hydration. Saw basically every show we wanted to see - the list above says it all. We made an early trip in every day saw a couple bands, came back to camp for some more beers and tunes before going in for the rest of the night.

We probably hit every water station and as a result, porta potty, 20x a day which obviously helped and I was over 30k steps most days but I don't think there was a single issue all weekend. Everything felt so smooth and easy this year. I didn't even have any real hangovers. I don't know if it was just the great group or preparedness of having been a few times but it was all really easy this time around, despite all the reasons it shouldn't have been.

1) Chris Stapleton at the Hollywood Bowl. Phenomenal. Terrific set list and it was the best performance I’ve seen from him. He’s always great but now he’s comfortable in his own skin as a performer. Hard to beat a beautiful summer night at the Bowl and Stapleton rose to the occasion. Love when it’s just him and his guitar on stage. Grace Potter opened and honestly was expecting more. She screeched a lot and thought she should have slowed a few numbers down. Still high energy. Allen Stone opened, like him but it was such a quick set so only caught the last song.

2) Foreigner, Styx, John Waite. Surprise to me was Waite. He was on at 6:45 and the arena was PACKED. Never seen that for an early opener. Crushed his hits and even did some Led Zep covers. Looked like he was 40 on stage. Shocked that he was 70 something. Very good. Styx was pretty good. Little too theatrical for me but that’s their MO and they have some great hits. Foreigner is always good. I’m biased because they provided me some of my best childhood memories. Sophomore in HS when their debut album came out. Short set but all hits and everyone of course knew every word. Kelly was great singing (by the way saw Lou Gramm a few rows in front of us at Tedeschi Trucks - let’s just say he’s not too spry anymore) but no originals. Mick wasn’t there. Going into rock and roll HOF so wanted to see them one last time. But it will probably be the last. Fun night overall.

Never seen foreigner or Styx would be a fun show I bet. Looks like they just came 2 weeks ago on well

Light summer concert schedule, but picks up in the fall.

7/12 John Lodge from Moody Blues

9/9 Pearl Jam

9/23 Sigur Ros with Wordless Orchestra

9/27-28-29 Oceans Calling Festival

10/11 Johnny Marr and James

Saw Edwin McCain, Collective Soul, and Hootie & The Blowfish last night. Enjoyable trip back to the 90s.
My wife and I were at that show

MCCain was a cool surprise, we didn’t know he was going to be there

Collective Soul was great! If you’re a fan and you get to see them definitely do it in my opinion.

I didn’t know what to expect from Hootie, someone posted upthread that they saw them and the band wasn’t into it. Not the case this time. We really enjoyed it. I feel like they played for 90 mins

John Waite is in a class that includes Cy Curnin of The Fixx who have simply been touched by the creator with the voice and performance ability that will always be gold standard until they sadly leave us one day. Cy sounds darn near as good or better than he did back in the 80s and he is 66.

Think I might go see my morning jacket on Tuesday

Oh man what an amazing show. I’m not that familiar with their stuff, somehow they ended up on my radar and I heard they have great live performances so decided to check it out

Jim gets a little pitchy for me at times, but overall just a great performance. Would definitely see them again

Opener was Karina Rykman, she was really good musically, vocally she was ok. Lotta energy though and some great jams

"Dark Side of the Diamond" with Echoes of Pink Floyd at Jackson Field (Lansing Lugnuts) tonight with fireworks following the show.

Echoes of Pink Floyd playing two sets featuring a laser light show, including Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon synced to Wizard of Oz playing on an LED screen at the ballpark.

ETA: Awesome show. They played Dark Side of the Moon full album synced with Wizard of Oz playing on a large LED screen. The movie/album definitely syncs up well, never seen it done but always wanted to. Highlights:

* The "Great Gig in the Sky" syncs perfectly with the tornado.
* The start of "Money" syncs perfectly with Dorothy opening the door to a colorized Munchkinland.
* During "Us and Them" when the lyrics say “Black and blue”, the scene syncs perfectly with the music, immediately going from the black adorned Wicked Witch of the West to Dorothy in her blue dress. Really accentuated the theme of the song, conflict and the dichotomy of relationships.
* Glenda the Good Witch shows up perfectly timed with the clocks going off in "Time".
*The lyric “the lunatic is in my head” in "Brain Damage" syncs perfectly with Dorothy meeting the Scarecrow.

There were others but I can’t recall them right now.

With it being 4th of July, numerous fireworks displays were going off the entire time. All outdoor Pink Floyd shows need to have fireworks, I'm convinced of that now. Such a cool atmosphere,

Highly recommend if you ever have the chance to see them. Very tight band.

This sounds awesome. They played the studio album synced or they played a live cover version? That would seem difficult.

Live cover version. The beginning credits rolled for a few seconds it seem before they started in on "Speak to Me". They've definitely done this many times before, but I agree, in order to hit some of these spots perfectly in timing would be really difficult. The “Us and Them" sequence with the "Black and blue" lyric was spot on, there wasn't a second disruption in the timing. Was pretty unreal.

(possibly) Big Head Todd and the Monsters - Keeping the Blues Alive Cruise - March 2025 - If you want to see a favorite band up close and personal, this is a way to do it.
I’ve looked at that Blues cruise several times. A few years ago they had Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Samantha Fish and several other I loved in addition to Joe B. Never made it though. Are they as great as they sound?

I'm familiar with the company that puts them on (Sixthman). They are a great company that does amazing things on the ships to facilitate the engagement between the guests and the artists. Take a look at their website to see the depth and breadth of the different types of immersive experiences they offer. They have some cruises that don't even open for sale to the public market due to the repeat guests that re-book year after year and sell the ship out before they even have a chance to go release it. That's the case for the Keeping the Blues Alive cruise, it was on a waitlist over a year from the departure date.

For context, in addition to the multitude of music cruises they operate - Headbangers for metal, Rock the Bells for Hip Hop, Rock the Boat for rock music, Emos Not Dead Cruise, Boots on the Water for country, they also do experiential cruises with the Savannah Bananas, Chris Jericho (wrestling), culinary, Hallmark Channel, Broadway, etc. Ton's of variety.

I’ve got quite a few lined up in Aug and Sep

Tedeschi Trucks - confirmed

Blink-182 - probable (my kid wants to go so he can take some girl who likes the opener)

Avett Brothers - probable - waiting to see if I can get some cheaper tickets last minute. Also same venue we saw My Morning Jacket at and the seats are pretty uncomfortable, so wife is not thrilled with another show there

King Gizzard - doubtful - I want to go but it’s 2 days after the Avett Bros show and not sure I can talk my wife into seeing them.

Cage the Elephant- confirmed

Clutch / Rival Sons - probable- im planning on it as long as it isn’t marching band homecoming game

Megadeth - confirmed

Korn - confirmed

Billy Strings - confirmed (he’s doing 2 nights in Detroit but could only talk wife into 1)
