Concerts thread - FBG's lovin' live music, we're back in action! (2 Viewers)

Went to see Gorillaz at the Met in Philly on Friday night. Looking at the list of tour dates, it looked like they were mostly playing arenas in other cities, and we got them in a 3,500 seat theater which was pretty special.

What a fun show! A lot of special guests came out for cameos/collabs (Del tha Funky Homosapien, Earthgang, De La Soul, Bootie Brown, Fatoumata Diawara), and a good mix from all of their albums.

Bonus points for the free wifi at the Met so that I could stream the Phillies playoff game from my phone before the show.

Got put on 'a list' to go watch The Dirty Knobs open for a little band called The Who on Thursday. Pretty excited for this. Childhood friend is now a guitar player/vocals for Dirty Knobs. He's living the dream (Runnin down a dream?)!

My buddy texted a few of us on group text - this is too good not to share:

I was standing in the hallway about 15 minutes afterward we arrived and had just come off the stage where I was ogling Pete's guitars and just getting the lay of the land. Mike Campbell walked past me in the hall and said "Hey you wanna meet Roger?" And I went "Um...FOCK yes?"

So the next thing you know, Mike and I are in Roger's dressing room, and he's sitting there, eating a bowl of soup, SHIRTLESS.

****ing Roger Daltrey. Age 78. No shirt. Still ripped.

Like seriously, looked like he could kick my asss

And we sat there and talked to him for about 20 minutes. He did most of the talking - and I understood about three words. It was absolutely mind-blowing.

So we play our show - first couple songs people were still arriving, and the response was ok, but as our set built, the crowd really filled in and they started really responding. We ended with Runnin Down A Dream and Mike took a long kicks solo, and then the crowd went nuts for us. We walk off, thank you good night. We walk into our dressing room, and STANDING IN OUR DRESSING ROOM IS THE GOD OF ****ING SONGWRITING, PETE ****ING TOWNSHEND

He shook all our hands and then sat there and talked to us for about 10 minutes or so. And then he was like "Are you guys doing more shows with us?" And we said "Yeah, we've got 9 more." And he goes "OH **** ME, I DON'T NEED TO WASTE ALL THIS BLOODY CONVERSATION FIRST ****ING NIGHT!" And then bounced out of the room. And we all just fell down and died.

People get freaked out and geeky around Mike Campbell. We see it every day. But I've never seen Mike COMPLETELY lose his **** like he did in front of Pete. He was like a schoolboy. Just goo-goo eyed and drooling. It was amazing.

I saw Ron Artis ii and the truth last night at a small venue across the street from my house, there are certain musicians that you see and are completely blown away by when seeing live and this was the case with Ron. If his tour is near you then I'd run to see him, he spent the summer opening for Jack Johnson but he's more Gary Clark jr./Ben Harper.

I wonder if he's sick of Metta World Peace jokes?

if he is i’m not sure that he would show it. the guy drips aloha, although i almost brought up to him that he looks like the corn meme kid. instead i made some other dumb comment while he was signing my lp

Forgot to contribute to this thread. Recent shows:

Iron Maiden (Trivium opened) Concord Pavillion
Maiden still brings it. Amazing show. Ticket was very expensive, but this stage show is so impressive it was almost worth it.

The Melvins Cornerstone, Berkeley
First time seeing this band live, and it was AWESOME. Must-see if you haven't had the chance.

Circle Jerks and The Descendants UC Theater, Berkeley
Not much to say except both bands we incredible.

Three more:

Unto Others, Napalm Death, Behemoth, Arch Enemy UC Theater, Berkeley
I was jacked for this one, as I'd never seen Napalm live. ****ing brutal. Got to meet Barney and Shane - seemed like nice dudes.

Eyehategod (Molten and Antichrist Siege Machine opened) The Great Northern, San Francisco
A new friend is schooling me in New Orleans hardcore. I didn't know much Eyehategod, but if you like Phil Anselmo's Down, that is a very similar analog comparison. My buddy knows these guys, so we all hung out before and after the show. Really decent chaps.

The Fleshies, Kicker, Pins of Light, The Grannies El Rio, San Francisco
Don't know if you've heard The Fleshies or Pins of Light, but these are two of the best west coast hardcore bands.

Going with some buddies to see Live/Tonic Dec 30. Staying overnight at local casino

They are much bigger fans of those bands than I am (they’re just OK for me). Gonna be a blast though and good chance it ends up a complete ****show

Seeing Ocean Blue in about 2 hours in downtown Orlando. They put on a great show. Saw them in West Palm Beach last year.
15 years ago. My wife and I owned a graphic design studio in this Mayberry-ish town, Wheaton, Illinois. and met 2 brothers who owned a video editing shop down the street. The Ronne brothers, Eric and Oed. In getting to know them find out Oed was a guitarist in a 90’s band band called The Ocean Blue. I liked to think I knew a lot about music and bands, but embarrassingly never heard of em. Gave them a listen at the time and dug it. I kinda figured they had broken up. Cool to see they are back on the road playing sold out shows!

On Saturday, my son and I saw Better Than Ezra at HOB as we continue to celebrate all things 90s Frat Rock. Almost saw Cowboy Mouth the night before.

Thursday after next, we have tickets to Ninja Sex Party.

Then a weekend trip down to Austin to see the farewell show for Quiet Company to kick off December.

I saw Suede (aka The London Suede) and Manic Street Preachers co-headline a theater show on Monday. They're both bands that were huge in the UK during the 90s but never broke the States. Suede hasn't toured over here for 25 year.

Mrs. Eephus wasn't feeling well day of show so I flew a solo mission after we couldn't sell the tickets. I was considering bailing myself but the venue was eight blocks from the house so I made the effort on a damp Monday night. I'm glad I did because Suede put on the best show I've seen this year. Brett Anderson is a great frontman and the band has a strong catalog of old and new anthems. The Manics were just OK but they've never been my favorites.

My Daughter bought annual pass to St Andrews Hall (The Shelter) in Detroit and has been seeing 2-3 concerts a week and has been begging me to join her for one. I am home from work travel and she texted me that POD will be there tomorrow night (I assumed they would be the headliner for some reason). So, we have tickets and Jinjer is the actual headliner. Knowing nothing about them, I put them on Spotify in the car. First song, cool open, eerie metal female lead, digging it so far and the BOOM, full on Cookie Monster :scared: Not quite sure what I have gotten myself into, but it should be interesting.

What's the best site to use to set up alerts for bands coming to your area?
(Or do you just sign up for email lists for 100 bands individually?)
I don't pay alot of attention but seems like I'm always late on some shows.

BTW, anyone ever heard of Poe / Anne Danielewski? She's been on my list to see for about 20+ years but after Hello, Haunted, and some label legal battles she seems to have fallen off the map, around 2000 or especially 2010. Maybe she just gave up on music, IDK.

I have been using Bandsintown for awhile, happy enough with it. Push notifications were getting out of hand, so I turned those off and just go to my email now.

I subscribe to all of my local venues, MEMI, Live Nation, and Bandsintown. Also follow local venues on Facebook.

:hey:

Saw Mercyful Fate tonight at the Fillmore in Philly with Kreator and Midnight. Saw King Diamond solo when they were at the Tower Pre Pandemic. Awesome show. First cancert seeing all 3. Merciful Fate was great as usual. Was not a Kreator fan but loved them and they said they are doing a headline tour in 23 and coming back so my buddy is getting us tickets for them. Never thought I'd like Kreator heard one of their songs and think it's on my Spotify list but never was a "oh I have to check these guys out." type deal. it's amazing what seeing a band at a live show does to peak your interest or seeing some live videos.

While I enjoyed spending time with my daughter and at an awesome venue, Jinjier is not a band I'd go out of my way to see again. I did enjoy Space of Variations, who opened and barely hand enough room to move on stage with the gear for all 4 bands. The second act, Vendead, which is fronted by Corey Taylor's kid had pretty good dual lead guitarist, but (not to sound like an old man) every song sounded exactly the same to me. POD made the night worth while. The mentioned they'd been coming to this same venue in Detroit for 31-years (which really put them out of place on the bill). Jinjer had a HUGE following at the venue and a massive mosh pit opened and went the whole set. Thank God for balcony seats.

The next morning we flew out he to Boise, ID to visit our son. A friend of my family out here is a Promoter and offered to get us on the list to see a sold out show at the Olympic Theatre downtown. While I've never heard of them, The Brothers Comatose was a great evening Sunday Night after day drinking around downtown all afternoon. They included a fun cover of Led Zeps Going to California and another cover by Depeche Mode.

I had 4 new releases that were all right up there for my personal album of the year contenders... but after seeing Wet Leg live last night, I'm fairly certain they are going to take the #1 spot. What a fun show!

Last night we drove about an hour south of Austin to see Marshall Tucker Band at the Gruene (pronounced "green") dance hall. They were just finishing a 200 city tour this year and only had a couple stops left. Doug Gray (only founding member still with the band) really can't sing any longer, but he tried but generally let the others sing. He looked quite tired. The other musicians were very good and the "flutist" was excellent. Lots of long jams. Quite good acoustics for a "dance hall". Probably about 500+ people.

Already have 7 shows scheduled in 2023. I imagine there will be more when some of the bands I am looking at announce tour dates.

3/14 - They Might Be Giants (St. Pete)

3/16 - Clan of Xymox (Orlando)

3/30 - Depeche Mode (Las Vegas)

4/27 - Hoodoo Gurus (St. Pete)

5/20 - Ed Sheeran (this is all Mrs. O) (Tampa)

5/21 - Crowded House (DC)

9/12 - The Mission UK/Chameleons (Tampa)

Miranda Lambert on Saturday, Aerosmith on Sunday. Vegas. Though the latter is in jeopardy as shows were cancelled for Friday and tonight due to Steven’s illness. Hope it’s just that and not tied to his most recent rehab stint. Lots of fans who travelled from all over are pretty bitter.

Got Snake Pit tickets for Metallica at Ford Field next November. Stage is in the round and the pit is in the middle of the round stage. No idea how it is going to work, but pretty pumped.

Playing 2 shows, one on Friday night and one on Sunday, different sets with different openers. Friday night is new "Pantera" and Mammoth WVH, Sunday is Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills.

I may end up at one of the shows, the Friday one is my birthday. I didn’t want to commit to a show a year in advance though, so ill just take my chances on the secondary market

May not be everyone's cup of tea, but I went to see a progressive house/trance DJ named John Digweed at a club in downtown LA on Friday night.

It was awesome. Last time I saw him at this venue it was for NYE and he didn't come on until 11:30pm and played through the night. This time it was an "open to close" set, meaning he started when they opened the doors at 10 and played until close at 3. I lasted until about 1:30am.

It was awesome.

Just purchased Stevie Nicks/Billy Joel...can't believe I've never seen Billy Joel.
I’ve been holding out to go to one his Madison Square Garden shows but haven’t made it yet

Saw Billy Joel finally and we really dug it, of no surprise. Never thought I'd see Stevie Nicks but we did so recently. Surprisingly good voice, still. I don't have a clue which or why voices hold up, unless it's Axel Rose, but I just figured her age would not allow it that same unique raspiness. But that wasn't the case, she still has it. Or at least a lot more left than I thought.

You are in for a real treat with those two.

For me, I will be seeing Social D soon. Love Mike Ness. Seen them many times. Besides us, it never gets old.

I love concerts but I have no desire to ever go to another festival. I find nothing appealing about them.
Small festivals are fine for me. Doheny Blues Festival, etc. But not the mammoth ones like Coachella. Young person’s game
2023 is going to be big on smaller festivals for my family and I. A best friend of my Sister in the promoter of the Treefort Music Festival in Boise, ID so we will have the run of the town. Bonus is that Jerry Cantrell will be there the Wednesday after and we'll be seeing him too. Then in May, we are heading to Gulf Shore for The Hangout Music Festival. The Chili Peppers alone should make it worth the trip.

I'm jealous. Never saw these dudes live.

Victim's Family, Nasalrod, Mordred, The Choice
You probably don't know any of these bands, but Nasalrod is one of the best live punk bands in the world, and their female bassist is a monster. If you don't know Victim's Family, they're a local favorite in Northern Cali, and two of the guys in this trio play in Jello Biafra's band. There are few musicians in the world better than Victim's.

Miranda Lambert residency in Las Vegas was a great show. Great mix of up tempo stuff with her slower ballads that really show off her voice. Not a bad seat in the house either
