No rumor:

Wisenhunt to take over for Green Jay Glazer / FOXSports.com Posted: 2 minutes ago The Arizona Cardinals have their replacement for the fired Denny Green. The Cardinals have tabbed Ken Wisenhunt as their new head coach, FOX NFL SUNDAY and FOXSports.com has learned. The former Steelers offensive coordinator has spent the last two days trying to nail down a deal and after working all night they finally got a deal done. Wisenhunt was already on the phone Sunday morning with a handful of assistant coaching options, although he's likely to keep much if not all of the Cardinals defensive staff. Wisenhunt also interviewed for the Dolphins and Steelers openings but it soon became clear that the Steelers were not jumping at a replacement for Bill Cowher.

Even if the Steelers still had Wiz as a candidate, they would have probably only offered him < 1/2 the guaranteed $$ than the Cards

:bag: It seemed like KW was THE hot HC canidate as soon as the HC jobs started opening up. Then the Falcons grab Petrino, the Stillers and Dolphins are looking elsewhere (apparently) and nobody wants the Raiders job...I think this is a good hire for ARI but I just figured KW would land one the those Top 3 jobs. Did his stock fall for a reason??? Or is this what HE wanted???

Whisenhunt was quoted as saying the Steelers HC was his dream job. I can only assume the Steelers didn't want him or the Cardinal's offer was too good to pass up.

How often is Fox wrong. I'll wait until I hear it from someone good.

Whisenhunt Hired As Cardinals New Head Coach

Darren Urban, East Valley Tribune - [Full Article]

The Cardinals have a new head coach. The team has come to an agreement with Steelers OC Ken Whisenhunt on a contract, two NFL sources said Sunday morning. Terms of the deal were not available. Whisenhunt has a reputation as a creative offensive mind and should fit well with a Cards offense that has star power with QB Matt Leinart, RB Edgerrin James, WR Larry Fitzgerald and WR Anquan Boldin. It seems out of character for Bidwell to overpay for a coach. It could be true that the Steelers didn’t want Whisenhunt.

Also reported Wayne sent his private jet tp Atlanta to pick up Mora for a second interview with the Dolphins. As a phins fan this is  way cool.

whisemhunt made the right choice.
First off, you are assuming Whisenhunt had a choice. Secondly, Arizona has been a coaching graveyard and one of the worst, if not THE worst, franchises in the NFL. It may unltimately turn out to be a good move for Whis, and I hope it does, but it sure isn't a slam dunk.

I think you're right, GB
Steelers' Whisenhunt to join Cardinals as new head coach

Sunday, January 14, 2007

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Arizona Cardinals will hire Ken Whisenhunt, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator, as their head coach today.

Whisenhunt, one of the top two candidates to replace Bill Cowher as head coach with the Steelers, never received an offer from Pittsburgh. That could mean Steelers will name Russ Grimm as their new coach soon.

Grimm, their assistant head coach and offensive line coach, has been considered a top candidate, along with Whisenhunt, for the Steelers job. Three other candidates from outside their staff also were interviewed: Georgia Tech Coach Chan Gailey, Minnesota Vikings Defensive Coordinator Mike Tomlin and Chicago Bears Defensive Coordinator Ron Rivera.

I don't disagree with what you're saying but if there's a way to tell if a franchise is headed in the right direction, the Cards seem to be. As many Cards fans will tell you, they gotta spend some $ on free agents as the next step. New stadium and practice facility, some prized draft picks that seem to be panning out, selling out games for a change...they've got a lot going on

Sure he could but he didn't have an from the Steelers so where would that have left him.

good luck..lol

If the Steelers wanted him they could have had him.

They like Whiz, but as a head coach... not as much.

How will "Whiz" like to run his offense. Is he a grind it out kind of coach or will he take advantage of Leinart and his wr's he's been blessed with.

curious as well. Looks like we both own Leinart. Hopefully both! Edge Edge play action deep to Fitz, depends on the OC kind of too.

any chance **** lebeau would leave?
Depends on who is hired as HC. If Rivera or Tomlin are hired there is a good chance since they run a 4-3.
you have to play the scheme that you have the personel to play (at least to start with), don't you?How are we going to run a 4-3? I guess with Chris Hoke in the Middle and Larry Foote on the bench?

Personally I think Foote and Farrior are the strength of the Steelers linebackers. Benching one of them in favor of Haggans or Porter would be stupid, IMO.Additionally, I am not so sure that Aaron Smith and Brett Kiesel make for very good DEs in a 4-3.

Disagree about Foote. I think he's a good cog but the weak link of the 4 LBs (that's not an insult when it's a quality crew). I agree about Smith and Keisel, which is why I cannot imagine a 4-3 being put into play with the players we have right now?

Good hire by the Cardinals. The defense was actually pretty underrated last year, and Whisenhunt is known as an offensive mind. He should help Leinart continue to progress, as well as figure out how to get that running game going.

Usually, Arizona is not an attractive place to coach, but they have a solid young nucleus.

 Great hire IMO. Seems like a totally different offensive package to work with, it will be interesting to see if he tries to shape the offense to his style or reshapes his style. Either way, it seems he should know he needs a better OL.

Much better than Sherman.
