Consensus Top 350 Albums of All-Time: 1. The Dark Side of the Moon – Pink Floyd (17 Viewers)

I wonder if I am the only one who participated in this who has never owned Nevermind in any form (cassette, CD, vinyl, digitally, etc.).
Never owned it physically back in the day. Knew just about the entire album though and downloaded it a handful of years ago because I felt like I needed to revisit them. Definitely a good listen, but they never clicked with me like they have with so many others.

Nevermind is the second studio album and major-label debut by American rock band Nirvana, released on September 24, 1991 by DGC Records. It was Nirvana's first release to feature drummer Dave Grohl. Produced by Butch Vig, Nevermind features a more polished, radio-friendly sound than the band's prior work. It was recorded at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, and Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, in May and June 1991, and mastered that August at the Mastering Lab in Hollywood, California.
Sorry to be a pain, Doc, but this is the album I ranked #34.

Same here. I didn't like grunge at all in real time, but came around to enjoying a small percentage of it years later. I do have Nirvana's hits in my iTunes, courtesy of my brother who sent them to me years ago, but I can't say I listen to them very much. Just not my thing, but I get that this album was seminal for many.

Vig was quite a local celebrity in the music scene in Madison in the early 90's. He owned a live music venue ("Vig's") for several years where I remember seeing both Husker Du and the Replacements a few times in their early hardcore years - both coming down from Minneapolis area a few hours drive away. The bands he had in his recording studio often played local shows, including likely Nirvana. I didn't see them, but I saw an early version of Pearl Jam named Mookie Blaylock and a band made up of young Japanese girls in mini-skirts, both at the old Club de Wash venue. His band Garbage played at the bar where I worked a couple times, under a different name in the very early days. He's a very cool, multi-talented guy.

All the points assigned to the albums are correct - I just messed up transporting the information on these last two albums. I started taking from the row above halfway through the list of participants and when I tried to fix my mistake I guess I got even more messed up.

Tomorrow will be better.

This record, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in particular, changed my outlook on music. I spent high school and the first half of college more interested in music from the '60s and '70s than in contemporary stuff. And then this record came charging on to the scene. My jaw dropped when I heard "Teen Spirit" for the first time, and I was floored by the other tracks when I got the album soon after. I still am, this record has stood the test of time no matter how much some of its tracks have been overplayed.

This is another disc with no wrong answers for the playlist.

Lord Huron - Strange Trails (2015) - 67pts

Fellow MAD31ers and participants in song drafts will not be surprised by this. I have been a huge fan of this album since it came out. I remember hearing Meet Me in the Woods and being instantly hooked and started listening to this album a ton. My wife and I saw them live with Nathaniel Rateliff and despite liking the showmanship of Rateliff, it solidified that we both were drawn to Lord Huron's music much more. A blend of rock and folk, lots of songs of lost loves and connections, all while evoking a sense of a cosmic plan and manipulation. It is not a concept album, but all their albums beg to be played from start to finish as the songs blend and flow together. It originally was conceived of as a movie or a series of movies (which is very much reflected in the videos they made for the album and their stage presentation) Obviously one of my favorite albums of the 21st century. I have recommend this album and band to so many people, and since I didn't think it was on the countdown it was going to be album #1 on my recommended listening list at the end of the countdown for anybody who hasn't tried it. I was going to go with a deeper track, but unless @shuke has a stronger pull for a song, I will go with the obvious Meet Me in the Woods since it was the one that started my love for this fantastic band.

Nice writeup. This has been my wife's favorite band since she heard "Ends of the Earth" in a movie she was watching with my son about 10-12 years ago. So naturally they've really grown on me. We've seen them 10 times now in 6 different states. This Friday will be our 11th.

Unfortunately this didn't happen. We were in Columbus at the venue when we got a call from the kids that our dog wasn't able to stay on his hind feet. We've been waiting for the end, as he was diagnosed with cancer within the past 6 months and we decided to not put him through the rigors of chemo and surgeries at his age (13). It took us a few hours to get home, luckily the kids were there to lay with him during that time. We took him to the vet, and he had progressive arthritis and muscle loss in his rear legs. With the inevitable progression through cancer looming, we made the hard decision to put him down.

We are all devastated, and this is especially tough on my wife. She doesn't get out as much as she would like due to chronic pain issues, and to have this concert experience interrupted like this has her wondering if she'll be able to listen to LH again based on memories of that night. And that saddens me.

Thanks for listening.

Sincere condolences GB. We are on our third dog right now. We had to put the first down due to a similar situation, and that was probably the worst day of my life so far. It's hard to talk about without getting upset.

In case you aren't aware of it, I highly recommend this book: Dog Heaven.

Which song would you like to be on the playlist? I'm leaning "The Beautiful Ones." I love his falsetto in it, and I love even more when the song intensifies and he breaks into his scream singing.

We going to put the entire London Calling album on the playlist?
We could. But me adding side 3 was really just a response to whoever put 2 songs from one album on the playlist. (I'm surprised it took this long to get a response.)
I'd be happy to just leave it at Death or Glory, but I'd like to see one of the Pepper songs removed as well. There's really no justification for including both. Unlike Foreplay/Long Time (Boston), they're listed separately on the album.

TIA

and the playlist has multiple copies of the same song a few times and half albums of London Calling and Wish You Were Here.
I missed the WYWH; sweet.

Seriously though, drop a Pepper and one of the SOYCD pieces, and cut all but Death or Glory and I'm fine with it.

I first heard Purple Rain when visiting my cousins in Indianapolis. It seemed so new and different and is definitely the soundtrack of that summer for me.

I went to see it with a friend, and while she was old enough to get into an R-rated movie without a parent, I wasn't, and they decided to check this. So we convinced a guy right behind us to pretend he was my dad. He was about 23 years old and Latino, but they went for it.

This is also the movie where Muhammad Ali was sitting 5-6 rows in front of us, and he was doing magic tricks for everyone before the show started. Afterward, we saw him in the parking lot and my friend went to get his autograph, but I was too shy.

I've only added a few songs for me or when some people asked. I'm not running the playlist. WYWH is just the two versions of that song. It's basically half the album.

I blame Mondays - Mondays suck
tone down the spoilers

I also did not own Nevermind. Don’t think I’ve ever done a complete listen to be honest. I know I’ve heard all the songs individually though but just didn’t feel right ranking it

Revolutionary album though and I’m on the younger side of this group so I think it came out when I was in like 6th grade or something and it started making its way onto the pop channels. Agree it definitely started a change in direction musically for my age group

That said a little surprised it’s ranked this high

Yeah, and whoever added them, added the second one a few hours after the first. Probably after seeing 2 from Sgt. Peppy and side 3 of London Calling.

I'll remove 3 of the Clash songs and if the others aren't fixed in a reasonable amount of time, I'LL START PULLING RANK. I won't stand for chaos.

It's been a long time since I've bothered to listen to Nevermind. They were probably my least favorite of the big Seattle acts, and Teen Spirit was inescapable as were other hits. I am sure part of it was me thinking I was too cool for school since I remember having Bleach after hearing Louder than Love and searching for more albums like that at Exclusive Co. They became too popular and the sound wasn't quite the same, so I pivoted to other bands. ( I know,, and I agree) . I like the "softer" songs and Unplugged, but I never liked Kurt's voice when get got to the more screaming range of things. I think that will be the pool listen today. No, I will not reinact the album cover while listening. ;)

Nevermind another one I was late to the party to, but damn it's good. Would pick Lounge Act but there's few bad choices for me
If we're being true to Kurt Cobain's style, one of the deeper cuts should get the playlist nod. Breed is my favorite with this, Drain You, and Stay Away not far behind but channeling my inner Kurt I think he'd push hard for Territorial Pissings.

I never owed Nevermind although I liked it fine. I think my younger, dumber self semi-protested it because I was jealous that was the album and band that blew up instead of all these other “alternative” (I don’t think I used that term then) bands that I loved and thought more deserving.
