Consensus Top 350 Albums of All-Time: 1. The Dark Side of the Moon – Pink Floyd (91 Viewers)

Lord Huron - Strange Trails (2015) - 67pts

Fellow MAD31ers and participants in song drafts will not be surprised by this. I have been a huge fan of this album since it came out. I remember hearing Meet Me in the Woods and being instantly hooked and started listening to this album a ton. My wife and I saw them live with Nathaniel Rateliff and despite liking the showmanship of Rateliff, it solidified that we both were drawn to Lord Huron's music much more. A blend of rock and folk, lots of songs of lost loves and connections, all while evoking a sense of a cosmic plan and manipulation. It is not a concept album, but all their albums beg to be played from start to finish as the songs blend and flow together. It originally was conceived of as a movie or a series of movies (which is very much reflected in the videos they made for the album and their stage presentation) Obviously one of my favorite albums of the 21st century. I have recommend this album and band to so many people, and since I didn't think it was on the countdown it was going to be album #1 on my recommended listening list at the end of the countdown for anybody who hasn't tried it. I was going to go with a deeper track, but unless @shuke has a stronger pull for a song, I will go with the obvious Meet Me in the Woods since it was the one that started my love for this fantastic band.

Nice writeup. This has been my wife's favorite band since she heard "Ends of the Earth" in a movie she was watching with my son about 10-12 years ago. So naturally they've really grown on me. We've seen them 10 times now in 6 different states. This Friday will be our 11th.

Unfortunately this didn't happen. We were in Columbus at the venue when we got a call from the kids that our dog wasn't able to stay on his hind feet. We've been waiting for the end, as he was diagnosed with cancer within the past 6 months and we decided to not put him through the rigors of chemo and surgeries at his age (13). It took us a few hours to get home, luckily the kids were there to lay with him during that time. We took him to the vet, and he had progressive arthritis and muscle loss in his rear legs. With the inevitable progression through cancer looming, we made the hard decision to put him down.

We are all devastated, and this is especially tough on my wife. She doesn't get out as much as she would like due to chronic pain issues, and to have this concert experience interrupted like this has her wondering if she'll be able to listen to LH again based on memories of that night. And that saddens me.

Thanks for listening.

Sincere condolences GB. We are on our third dog right now. We had to put the first down due to a similar situation, and that was probably the worst day of my life so far. It's hard to talk about without getting upset.

In case you aren't aware of it, I highly recommend this book: Dog Heaven.
I know it's a small comfort during those times, but be thankful you were there to say goodbye and know you were doing the right thing. I have always struggled with dealing with death, but what has made it a little better is being there with my wife (who is a vet ) as she put down our last few. It helps to say goodbye and see how peaceful it is. It hurt way more when my cat died unexpectedly at a young age when I was away for the weekend. No warning, no goodbye, just gone. I still struggle with that one 2 years later.

Nevermind another one I was late to the party to, but damn it's good. Would pick Lounge Act but there's few bad choices for me
It's fine. I think it's biggest contribution to music was as a reference in Herman Dune's Not on Top (and I'm only joking a little bit here). I wish the 2005 version was available on Spotify, but this one's pretty good.

I feel a little strange
Feels like i'll never get my ****
Together
27 and I'm ****ed
Well it's ten years from teenage
And that's a freaking lot
I think I'm getting old
I thought I never say
Then I bought nevermind
And it changed my life some 15 years ago

Ah, shuke, so sorry. It’s unbelievably heartbreaking to put down a beloved pet.

When my 13 year old dog had to be put down 7 months ago I was distraught for weeks. I wasn’t ready to let her go but my wife and our vet knew it was time.

I feel your pain and wish your family peace knowing how much you loved and cared for your dog. ❤️

I love some Pink Floyd but can’t imagine that 3 of their albums should be in the top 15 albums of all time.
I recently watched an interview with Brian May (by Rick Beato) and he was discussing different bands he liked over the years. The topic turned to Pink Floyd and he said “I loved Piper At the Gates of Dawn. Really haven’t listened to them much since.” I thought that was funny.

The guitar solo in Comfortably Numb alone is why I would have ranked the Wall ahead of the remaining Pink Floyd album. It would have been very close though.

Purple Rain deserves all of the accolades it receives. Such an amazing show of songwriting and musicianship. I called Prince one of the greatest guitar players in history one day and it shocked my wife. I had give her a few hours of youtube training to explain this one to her.

While I was more in the Alice In Chains/Soundgarden camp, Nevermind came around and blew up the music scene.

In another showcase of Pink Floyd popularity, I was out shopping when I saw a guy who looked about in his 70's wearing a Dark Side of the Moon T-shirt (with the prism rainbow album cover). A little later in the same department store I saw a little girl about 5 shopping with her parents. The girl was wearing the same T-shirt. 🌈
Normally I’d say cool parents, but Target and just about every department store sells DSOTM T-shirts these days, along with AC/DC, Led Zep and just about every other classic band.

Yeah, i see Leppelin shirts often as well.

That 1977 U.S. tour T-shirt is everywhere.

Even though I co-signed "And Your Bird Can Sing" as my choice from Revolver, because it's my favorite from the record, "Tomorrow Never Knows" is probably a better choice as an example of what was going on at the time that makes this album so incredible. "I'm Only Sleeping" would also be a fine choice to demonstrate the ground-breaking techniques being used by the lads at the time.
Looks like I am the top one on Revolver. Your logic on “Tomorrow Never Knows” makes sense to me. One of those albums where I think the whole is greater than any single song, and don’t think it has a bad song on it. I’ll go with TNK as representative.

I saw it at Target in the morning and then on about six different people in the same day. It was wild.

I’m a pediatrician and see 80-100 kids a week. I’m always very excited to see kids that come to their appointments wearing band t-shirts. Nirvana, AC/DC and The Beatles are by far the most common but I see many other band shirts.

At some point during the visit I always ask about the shirt. Ask if they like the band.

About 25% know and like the band. The other 75% just like the shirt or say their parent likes the band.

Just last week I walked into the exam room to see a 13 year old girl for her yearly well checkup. She was wearing a Cars’ t-shirt with their debut album cover on it.

As I started the physical exam I asked her if she was a Cars fan. She said yes. Her dad then asked me “can you name all the band members?”

I came up with Ocasek and Orr right away but admitted I had know idea about the others. She quickly listed off the other three.

A true fan.

As an aside, that’s another thread idea I’ve been noodling on: individuals on famous album covers and what happened to them.

For that Cars debut album, it was was Russian-born model, singer, writer, and journalist Nataliya Medvedeva. She died in 2003 at age 44.
Another true fan!
I’m a true fan of Google :bag:

Although I do know all the band members sans Google. 🙂

A man named Spencer Elden was the money chasing baby on the Nirvana cover. His parents were paid $200 for the photo shoot.

My 14-year-old has a parody shirt of the DSOTM cover, with a shark fin instead of a prism. We got it for him when we were on Cape Cod.

I have to admit I have the Target Nirvana shirt in black and yellow that everyone wears.
I have a box of old concert shirts in the basement somewhere because they are too threadbare to wear. Except one, Portishead from the Hammerstein show I’ve talked about before. My wife was uber pregnant but insisted on wading through the huge merch crowd after the show to get one for me. It’s threadbare too but it’s still in rotation. Mostly on her.

Wikkid is tsk-tsk-ing you from heaven.

So many great albums.Looking back on the list, I feel like Appetite for Destruction got shafted a bit.

Beatles definitely moved into a newgenre of music.
Nevermind started the grunge craze.
Floyd and Rush made theme albums and instrumentals mainstream.

Appetite killed Glam Rock and brought hard rock to mainstream. I'm a huge Metallica fan, but I don't think Metallica (and Megadeth, Maiden, etc) would have shifted towards mainstream if not for GnR's success with Appetite for Destruction. Obvi has 4 highly played songs, but even the hardcore non-playable on radio songs like My Michelle, Anything Goes, Rocket Queen really crashed through a barrier. Not that it's rated wrong. I just don't think it gets the appreciation it deserves. the album cover alone was controversial, as was everything about the album for those of us around in the late 80s. Europe, Cinderella, Winger, etc etc were crushing it on MTV. And A4D went so much harder. It was really cool.

Nevermind is the second studio album and major-label debut by American rock band Nirvana, released on September 24, 1991 by DGC Records. It was Nirvana's first release to feature drummer Dave Grohl. Produced by Butch Vig, Nevermind features a more polished, radio-friendly sound than the band's prior work. It was recorded at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, and Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, in May and June 1991, and mastered that August at the Mastering Lab in Hollywood, California.
Neither Mr R nor I ranked this at all. I can't stand Nirvana, despite the great album cover. The album I ranked at 13 is still to come, I think.

Wow, did I miss today. I had Purple Rain ranked unless the version I sent Doc didn't.

LOL.

I think it was #65, so it shouldn't matter at all. I'm clueless.

@shuke

I did manage to see your post through it all. I'm very sorry and I hope you and yours are okay and that this doesn't alter your life too much. Take care, bud.

@shuke - I’m so sorry to hear this. About a year ago my wife and I woke up at 3am to my daughters pup passed away in our bed. It was traumatic and painful for us but especially my daughter who was out of the country on a cruise. We had to call and tell her over the phone - we debated that decision for 24 hours. It’s been the year and it still hurts but now we talk about Abraham and the good times and laugh (and still cry some) and just enjoy we got the time we did with him. Miss him but remember what a great life you gave him. Condolences GB.

Sorry if this came across as a look at me. It’s been a year and while I mentioned his passing I think I never shared the details and typing this has helped.

My weird pick for #1 that I sent to KP before the countdown started is still out there, and my "final answer" #1 that I sent to a few last night also is. And with both, I'd much rather one of the other three be #1 than to find I'm right! I have two left from my list that I'd prefer, plus another that I respect a bunch even though it didn't make my list.

I still have a shot at guessing #1, but have been wrong about everything today so far.

Looks like 3 of the top 4 that I PM’d you earlier are still out there. I’ll take it.

I'm gonna guess publicly because while I ranked 3 of them, I didn't rank any of them highly. Plus it's clear this is what y'all want to talk about!

5. Dark Side Of The Moon - seems obvious after the last 2 days
4. Joshua Tree - U2 ain't my thing, but they've had 3 others ranked so this has to be up here
3. IV - this is a Beatles first crowd
2. Abbey Rd - but they've already had 7 albums chosen
1. Rumours - while 0 of theirs have been picked

Actually, i want to talk about also-rans because if not the order, the albums remaining for the top 20 was fairly predictable and I've already listened to all those before. ;)

Yeah I was going to say there are a lot of different Nirvana shirts that are popular with teens these days. The kids usually don't know what it is or even like rock music.

Well, since we're going there...

Rumours was my weird #1 I sent to KP before we started counting down.

Dark Side was my pick for #1 before we went into the top 10.

Joshua Tree and Abbey Road are both on my list, and I would completely get if LZ IV won instead. :)

It will be interesting to see if anything dominates this list like Breaking Bad/Seinfeld/Sopranos did the TV list. I'm guessing maybe not since there's probably a lot of overlap on artists but maybe not on which album(s) of theirs belong in your top 70.

I expect a clear #1 here.

I recall this post raising eyebrows, I was referring to DSOTM. Seeing what's left and how the countdown has gone, I'm sticking to this.

When I talked to a few people my strongest leans for #1when we started were Dark Side, LZ IV, and Nevermind in that order. I still have two of those alive.

When guessing the top 10 order I was all sorts of wrong, I had Revolver, Purple Rain, and Nevermind in my top 5. And thought The Wall would go first and I am still sprised at the ranking for Rumours and Joshua Tree.
