The Dark Side of the Moon is the eighth studio album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 1 March 1973 by Capitol Records in the US and on 16 March 1973 by Harvest Records in the UK. Developed during live performances before recording began, it was conceived as a concept album that would focus on the pressures faced by the band during their arduous lifestyle, and also deal with the mental health problems of the former band member Syd Barrett, who had departed the group in 1968. New material was recorded in two sessions in 1972 and 1973 at EMI Studios (now Abbey Road Studios) in London.

I like Fleetwood Mac, and have much love for a handful of songs, but I don't love Rumours that much to have considered ranking it. I get that many feel differently.

Abbey Road is awesome, especially Side 2. Love seeing it finish this high.

And my number 1 will be the consensus number 1!!

She was wearing a Cars’ t-shirt with their debut album cover on it.
As an aside, that’s another thread idea I’ve been noodling on: individuals on famous album covers and what happened to them.

For that Cars debut album, it was was Russian-born model, singer, writer, and journalist Nataliya Medvedeva. She died in 2003 at age 44.
She had a fascinating life. Posed for Playboy, was a writer for a Communist Russian magazine, was a piano bar singer in Paris, released a collection of poems with other famous Russian poets, recorded albums, got involved in a Russian political crisis.

Well done, @shuke

This is a ranking of albums, and to me Dark Side is one massive track. I mentioned it before in posts people don't read that the only reason I cut it is because I don't listen to it anymore, but it's a true masterpiece.

The untitled fourth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV, was released on 8 November 1971, by Atlantic Records. It was produced by the band's guitarist, Jimmy Page, and recorded between December 1970 and February 1971, mostly in the country house Headley Grange. The album contains one of the band's most well-known recordings, the eight-minute-long "Stairway to Heaven".

Tough call, but I will take When the Levee Breaks for the playlist.

Abbey Road is the eleventh studio album by the English rock band the Beatles, released on 26 September 1969, by Apple Records. It is the last album the group recorded, although Let It Be (1970) was the last album completed before the band's break-up in April 1970. It was mostly recorded in April, July, and August 1969, and topped the record charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom. A double A-side single from the album, "Something" / "Come Together", was released in October, which also topped the charts in the US.

If you did not have this album in your Top 70 albums, I feel like you've made a lot of other bad decisions in your life. I also think slightly less of you.
Man, tough to be called out by the organizer. I have three Beatles albums on my list and a 4th that just missed. None are Abbey Road. I just don't like it as much as the rest of you do.
Obviously I am joking - although I find it hard to believe someone can not love that album.

The side two medley is likely the greatest accomplishment in recorded music - with the possible exception of the Dead's "Terrapin Station."
The medley is excellent, as is Come Together and Here Comes the Sun. Just don't think a ton of the rest, tbh. I'd rather listen all the way through Revolver, The Beatles or Sgt Pepper. That's just me though.

Great idea and thread, Doc! Thanks for all the hard work and putting up with all the annoyances.

Love seeing Dark Side at #1. Yet another I should have had higher (probably in the 20s too) and I should have had WYWH on my list as well. Fantastic album top to bottom, and about the only reason I had it lower is it seems Money is the only Floyd song that local stations played here when I listened and I got a little sick of that song.

The greatest album ever finished as the consensus number 1 here. Well done. *golf clap*

It feels almost too easy, but Time would be my song pick, unless someone else wants to pick that and I will go with Us and Them.
Honestly had no idea it was so highly regarded here. I like WYWH and The Wall but didn't even consider Dark Side for the list. Listened a lot when I was younger but it's been a really long time since I've put it on the ol' turntable compared to the other two. Or really the rest of my list.

Obviously I still ranked it high, but I just don’t care for the middle of Dark Side all the much. Great opening and closing tracks, but Great Gig in the Sky…meh

Money is good but too overplayed for me, I usually skip it if it comes on my playlist or the radio

Also don’t really like Us and Them all that much, one of my least favorite popular Floyd songs

But Breathe, Time and Brain Damage / Eclipse are some of my favorites

As a complete album though it’s still great, but rarely something I listen to all the way through anymore

No complaints with it’s ranking though

LOL, just realized I don't even own Dark Side. Have WYWH, The Wall and Is Anybody Out There from PF. Probably should get it and listen to it.

Sad to see this end - now have some work to do to listen to some of these albums.

Outstanding work @Dr. Octopus @kupcho1 and anyone else involved - many thanks.
Thanks to all the participants as well - no one would want to see just me make a countdown of my favorites.

With that said, everyone should feel free to post their full lists. I will post some as well.

I think a fitting end to the countdown would be to add Brain Damage/Eclipse to the playlist. Perfect ending to a perfect album. Anyone else have any thoughts?

OK, it's bone pickin' time.

I recall a time when there was an artist that would win the coveted FFA album of the year. I'm referring, of course, to The Hold Steady. I struggled a bit in deciding which album of theirs to include as I thought votes might be split.

They weren't.

I was the only person that submitted a list that included them. What the hell happened? Did I miss an Orwellian cancelation or something?

Anyway, I had them at #5 with Boys and Girls in America.

Here's my list in full.

Another Sinatra at the Sands. Need to listen to that again. It's been awhile.

Moving on to movies now, so I will post some deep dives that I considered and had written down for my initial wave of ideas. I focused much more on my MAD artists and artists I have been listening to longer, but many of these were albums and bands I feel for while putting together our recent Theme playlist. Many have listens under 100K on Spotify and I think people in here will find a gem or two in here if they see a despriction or song that sticks out.

The BellRays - Black Lightning Husband and wife rock band. Her voice is fantastic RIYL Alabama Skakes, but more of a garage rock lean.
Gentleman's Dub Club - Down to Earth British reggae/dub band. Great party albums.
Kadavar - Abra Kadavar This album has a Sabbath feel, but each album is a different style. Very fun group.
Atomic Rooster - Nice 'N' Greasy This is the 70s band I was expecting to do for MAD, but Journey beat them out. All their albums are great
The Pineapple Thief - Your Wilderness RIYL Porcupine Tree, who never clicked with me despite very high praise. Here is a similar British prog act I like much more.
Film School - Film School melodic shoe-gaze is how I see it described. there is one of the albums that gives me vibes of The Cure as well
For a couple more metal suggestions:

Intronaut - The Direction of Last Things Some Deftones vibes as times, but they are more proggy and the drummer often reminds of Brann from Mastodon.
Baroness - The Red Album Yet another thanks to @Eephus for mentioning this band during my Mastodon MAD31. I had heard them before, but dug through all their albums after that and made a playlist. There is a mix of Mastodon but with a groove of Clutch. Love them and all the albums.

Thanks all for the great music! I liked Krista's idea of listening to at least one album from all participants (some I have already done) I made a list in the notebook of all participant's usernames and I am going to write albums down as people post their lists and also rans. I'll also take requests and suggestions. ;)
