Copycatting the top FF teams in your league (1 Viewer)

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But how many of you scout other successful teams? I admit that I do. Once I see a team that seems to have the Midas touch in always making the right moves, picking up the sleepers off the waiver wire, I follow that team and make the same moves accordingly in my other leagues. This strategy has paid off for me in spades acquiring the likes of Decker, Cruz, and recently Torain ahead of the blind bid waivers.

Also, there are even a couple of FBG posters who rarely comment (sorry but I won't tell who), but when they have something to say about a player they like, I’m all over it like they are EF Hutton. They have a knack for finding the next "hot pickup". I admit it’s not as sexy as claiming you are some sort of FF god, but it’s my secret to landing the prize FA’s, and keeps them all guessing “who the heck did he know?” I’ll admit it. I’m a rip-off artist. I’m still a day late and dollar short in the league I am playing against “that” owner, but I’m much more competitive in my other league, after a rough 0-2 start, and am back to 2-2.

Do any of you scout the hot team in your league, or favorite poster, and has that helped your team?

I certainly agree that some owners in my leagues carry more clout than others, and therefore any unexpected moves make me take notice. I do most of my "other team" scouting in the offseason, examining their draft tendencies individually and collectively, as this proves far more effective than any mock draft could ever be in enabling me to predict what players will likely be available in a given round.

Personally, my goal is to be the team that others use as their copycat model.

Sure, we could all take credit for a wonderful draft, but let's be realistic. We all have some disappointing picks we regret making. If you drafted the perfect team, congrats to you. For the rest of us, we can sometimes we end up handicapped. And to play catchup, you need to churn your roster effectively and when I see others doing it expertly, I take notice. Why not check out which team picked up which player on the down low, and swoop in on your other league to make the sneaky pickup?

I'm not saying that I had the perfect draft. I would love to have drafted McFadden and Gronkowski instead of stiffs I took instead because I was concerned over McFadden's health and Gronkowski's numbers being TD-inflated last year. What I am saying is that I have had more success by attempting to set the pace rather than following the moves of others. I will concede that if you have a long tenure in one league in which one team is consistently dominant, you may be able to see their moves as good suggestions in other leagues, so long as you take the differences between the leagues into account. However, you will probably find at least as much insight into good waiver wire moves by participating actively in the Shark Pool as you will trying to duplicate another person's process in a different league. If it works for you, do it. I still think the goal is to be the team others try to emulate. That's not meant to be an arrogant statement any more than when NFL coaches state that the goal is to win the Super Bowl.

It's like playing chess with two other people simultaneously. Copy each player's moves in the other game and you are guaranteed to win one of the matches.

But in FF, if you have a blind waiver system, I'm not sure how you could keep up. You'd be a week behind if you waited to see who the owners picked up.

You are right for BB waivers, there's no way to use that info. But in my leagues, you get a 15 minute wait period after waivers are awarded and then it's free for all pickups. I'll check my waivers email and notice who went and how much and see if anything interesting pops up. Once free pickup period starts, I'm usually first in line to pick up a guy I may have overlooked.

There are definitely posters here and managers in your leagues who will have a better eye for talent and ear for insight than others. Find ways to distinguish between insight and opinion and learn to trust the opinions of those that earn it.

I *AM* the hot team in my league. LOLMost of my "tips" I get from the Pool. I use the collective intelligence of the users here along with my own gut feel on pickups/trades, etc. Sometimes I come here (or the AC forum, more specifically) for validation of a move or trade I am considering. Always good to bounce these things off others since I can't see every player/team play each week.

Over the years you know which owners are going to take your sleepers if you wait too long, so like poker you have to pay attention where that owners position is vs your own, and maybe reach a bit to beat him out, you'll know when he cringes haha

in the past the players that I dropped ended up blowing up on the same owners squads that picked them up right away, so now I hang on to my guys longer....wait that sounded funny.

Trust yourself and know thy nemisis

I check out every teams pick up, not just certain ones, I usually am current on news, but if I don't know the logic of the pick up at hand, I look into the news on that player.

See, that's where I differ a little bit. I also take note of the guppy owners who have the reverse Midas touch. If they are picking up someone off of free waivers, I think long and hard about making the same move. If I see a savvy owner pick up a surprise player, I jump in quick ahead of the breaking news.

:lmao: that's true, you do eventually know who is the guy that is constantly picking up and dropping Meacham or the player that just had 1 rec for 90 yds and a TD, eh hem Devery. Its all about staying current on news, thats why the pool is so great.
