THE GAZETTE

ENGLEWOOD – Running back Correll Buckhalter took a step toward returning for a huge AFC West showdown against San Diego on Monday.

Buckhalter, who missed Sunday’s game against New England with an ankle injury, practiced with the team Wednesday. He was taking normal repetitions during the period of practice that is open to the media. Buckhalter started Denver’s first four games at tailback and had 267 yards, averaging 7.2 yards per carry.

Buckhalter isn’t guaranteed to get his starting spot back. Rookie Knowshon Moreno started last week against the Patriots. He leads the Broncos with 337 rushing yards. Even if Buckhalter doesn’t start next Monday at San Diego, he should have a significant role if he is healthy enough to play.

Correll Buckhalter: Correll Buckhalter exits withl ankle injury

Correll Buckhalter - RB - DEN - Oct. 4 - 6:29 pm et

Correll Buckhalter left Sunday's game in the third quarter with a left ankle injury and is considered questionable to return.

With six rushes for 37 yards and five receptions for 55 yards, Buckhalter was Denver's most effective offensive player before suffering the injury. He had been handling the majority of the rushes after Knowshon Moreno opened the second half with a lost fumble. Stay tuned for updates. Oct. 4 - 6:29 pm et
Please post any updates here - as many either have been using him or Moreno and it could mean a bump in production for Moreno. Looks like Denver is for real and there is solid production to be had from these guys.

Correll Buckhalter: Dealing With Ankle Sprain - 10/5/2009 9:31:42 AM

Update:

Buckhalter (ankle) was seen using crutches after Sunday's game against the Cowboys, although x-rays on his injured ankle were negative, the Denver Post reports.

Recommendation:

"Just a sprained ankle, nothing more" was the description from Buckhalter after the game when asked about the injury. While a bum ankle could slow him down a little, his reaction made it seem like something he could bounce back from. Rookie Knowshon Moreno is getting a majority of the carries out of the Denver backfield, but Buckhalter has been getting looks from that spot, as well as a few catches out of the backfield. The team will monitor him this week, but early indications are that he will be fine for the team's next game against New England.
The way he fell and was injured, I am surprised he would be back next game. I am not saying it's not true, just thought if it was "nothing more than an ankle sprain" he would have come back in.EDIT: Also was reported he left on crutches, but I am guessing this is not uncommon for injuries to the lower extremities.

From the Denver Post:

Even while leaning on crutches, running back Correll Buckhalter was yucking it up with friends and family outside the Broncos' locker room.

"Just a sprained ankle," said Buckhalter, the Broncos' leading rusher and among their top receivers. "Nothing more."

Buckhalter was having a splendid, all-around game Sunday in the Broncos' 17-10 victory against the Dallas Cowboys. Midway through the third quarter, he had 92 yards total offense (37 rushing on six carries and 55 receiving on five receptions).

But after rushing around right end for 7 yards, Buckhalter was clobbered near the sideline by DeMarcus Ware and Ken Hamlin.

"Somebody fell on my ankle," Buckhalter said.

He had to be helped off the field, although he was able to put some weight on his ankle. X-rays were negative.

Sprained ankle may keep Buckhalter on sideline next game

Posted: 10/06/2009 01:00:00 AM MDT

Through the perfect first quarter of this season, running back Correll Buckhalter has been at least the most versatile player, if not the most valuable, of the Broncos' offense.

There is a decent chance the MVP won't play Sunday against the New England Patriots at Invesco Field at Mile High.

Buckhalter was helped off the field with a badly sprained ankle in the third quarter of the Broncos' 17-10 victory over the Dallas Cowboys and later left the stadium on crutches.

"We have a system in place here regardless of who's playing," offensive coordinator Mike McCoy said. "We're going to go out there and run our system, and we've got a number of talented guys in our backfield and we'll be just fine."

If Buckhalter can't play against the Patriots, rookie Knowshon Moreno may get his first NFL start. Moreno would likely be spelled by veteran LaMont Jordan.

"We'll have to wait and see," Jordan said. "It's something where I've been in this situation before and you have to be prepared. It's an opportunity I've been waiting for. I definitely wouldn't want it to come at one of my teammates' expense, but that's the business."

Buckhalter leads the Broncos in rushing with 267 yards on an eye- popping 7.2 yards per carry. He has as many catches as Eddie Royal (eight) and for 38 more yards. Buckhalter has also been a strong blitz blocker for quarterback Kyle Orton.

Per Roto:

Correll Buckhalter-RB- Broncos Oct. 6 - 3:14 pm et

ESPN.com's Bill Williamson believes Correll Buckhalter could miss "a week or two" with a high ankle sprain.

This is the first we've heard of the injury being of the high-ankle variety, but Williamson is a reliable source as a former Broncos beat writer. Buckhalter had been handling outside runs and much of the passing-game work. Knowshon Moreno is best suited to take over that role, so expect the rookie to see an increased workload against the Pats this week.

Correll Buckhalter-RB- Broncos Oct. 6 - 12:29 pm et

ESPN's Adam Schefter "doesn't think" Correll Buckhalter (ankle) will be able to play this week.

Schefter was just speculating more than reporting, but he's very tuned in to the Broncos' organization. Buckhalter was on crutches after Sunday's loss and X-rays came back negative. Knowshon Moreno could be in line for some extra work this week against the Patriots.

Injured Broncos tailback misses practice

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos might be without their most productive running back when they face the New England Patriots this weekend.

Correll Buckhalter, who sprained his left ankle against Dallas on Sunday and left the stadium on crutches, missed practice Wednesday.

Buckhalter got hurt after gaining 55 yards on five receptions and 37 yards on six carries against the Cowboys.

For the season, he leads the team with 267 yards on 37 carries for a whopping 7.2-yard average. He also has caught eight passes for 96 yards.

The Broncos will likely turn to rookie Knowshon Moreno, who has rushed for 249 yards so far, to start Sunday, with LaMont Jordan and Peyton Hillis getting some carries, too.

Buckhalter ruled out of Patriots game

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 9, 2009 4:17 PM ET

The Patriots and Broncos will be without their usual starting running backs when they face off Sunday.

To no great surprise, the Broncos ruled out Correll Buckhalter on Friday because of an ankle injury suffered last week against the Cowboys.

The running back depth chart in Denver is much clearer than in New England, where a host of players will help pick up the slack for Fred Taylor.

First-round pick Knowshon Moreno will start for the Broncos, with LaMont Jordan and Peyton Hillis likely to be used liberally off the bench. Moreno has improved each week during the regular season, starting to show the special cuts, and lateral moves he displayed at Georgia.

Moreno has 60 carries for 249 yards through four weeks, although he hasn't been as involved in the receiving game as expected. He could find tough sledding against New England Sunday with the Patriots daring Kyle Orton to beat them deep.

Updated.

Anyone think this brings down Moreno? Might make me second guess the no brainer matchup with Buckhalter in there.

Agreed. Was really hoping Knowshon would have a "signature" game to stake his claim in this backfield before Buckhalter returned but it didn't happen.

I wouldn't jump the gun yet on Buckhalter being 100% or back for that matter. As per Roto:

Correll Buckhalter (ankle) returned to Broncos practice Wednesday, but Knowshon Moreno took all the first-team tailback reps.Buckhalter took some handoffs and caught screen passes. The Broncos do not release a formal injury report until Thursday because they face the Chargers on Monday Night Football, but Buckhalter was likely "limited" in the workout. He figures to be "questionable" on the final injury report Saturday. Moreno is a high-end RB2 start in PPR leagues even if Buckhalter plays. Oct. 14 - 3:42 pm et
From the Roto report, Moreno is taking all the 1st team reps which is promising. Even more interesting if not promising is that this report says that Buckhalter was "limited" in the workout and they speculate that he will be questionable heading into Monday's game with the Chargers. So at this point, I'd say that there's not enough to overly concern me about Moreno's prospects this week. And the best part is that with SD's run defense, Moreno could easily put up very impressive numbers with only 15 or so carries.

Thanks, smack. Gotta monitor this situation, but I am a bit more worried about the SD matchup than most. I think coming off the bye they will be very prepared for Denver, including the run D.

What? Wait!! A reporter just speculating??? Like TO getting traded to Chicago or Brady Quinn putting his house on the market means he must be getting traded??If Buck does come back, and even if it's this week, Moreno's still gonna see the bigger half of the carries, AS HE WAS BEFORE. I imagine a 2-1 ratio on series work. It's the nature of the NFL now that if you have the depth at RB you don't utilize one main guy the entire game. It doesn't necessarily "hurt" Moreno's value as he was getting better and better every week even when Buck WAS playing. Perhaps a slight tick down for THIS week if Buck is active but it's no need to panic. Moreno is still an excellent RB2 in fantasy.

I totally agree with this. I've been having an increasingly bad feeling about this matchup that couldn't get any easier on paper. MNF, Chargers coming off a bye, at home, lose to Denver and you go down 2.5 games in the division. I just smell a desperate Chargers team and wouldn't be surprised if they play like anything BUT the league's 27th ranked run D. But maybe I'm just seeing ghosts.

The bolded part is key. Remember, Moreno didn't get the benefit of training camp because of a fairly significant knee injury. He's just now starting to show the kind of ability he displayed in college, but it's really just the tip of the iceberg. Moreno's lateral agility is off the charts. In fact, I've never seen a RB with better lateral agility (especially for a 217-pounder). When you couple that with his outstanding balance & receiving ability, Moreno has the potential to be an elite NFL RB. That said, it might take awhile before your see Moreno in top form.Moreno will get better & better. And make no mistake...Moreno will be their feature back no later than 2010. There's not a whole lot of RBs I'd rather have in a dynasty league. However, Buckhalter is an above-average RB & I could see a continuation of the time-share this season provided he's healthy. Anyway, something tells me McDaniels knows what he has in Moreno.

I'm seeing the same ones. I would love to know how teams fare defensively coming off the by compared to going into the bye. My hunch is that they are definitely more stout?Moreno is very high on everyone's list for the week.

Not sure about defensively but apparently teams coming off byes win 60% of the time. From PFT quick hits

The Falcons have four straight games against teams coming off their bye week, teams that historically have won 60 percent of those games.

Looking better for Buckhalter and worse for Moreno owners:

THE GAZETTE

ENGLEWOOD • Knowshon Moreno has lost two fumbles this season, and Correll Buckhalter has lost one. Each of the Denver Broncos’ top running backs will need to keep both hands on the ball Monday night.

San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera likes his players to strip the ball, something the Broncos are well aware of. After the first Chargers player gets the ballcarrier, the next few players will be trying to pry the ball away.

“Every team in the league does it, but they do a little better job with it,” Buckhalter said. “As a runner, you have to always be aware. If you’re lackadaisical with the ball, at any point they can get it out.”

The Broncos should get Buckhalter back this week after he missed Sunday’s game. He said his injured ankle was 90 percent, and he was a full participant in practice Thursday.

Fellow running back LaMont Jordan missed his second straight day of practice, although his absence was not injury related, according to the Broncos’ injury report. Jordan was absent because he was attending a funeral, according to his agent Alvin Keels.

And another:

Buckhalter will be back

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 15, 2009 3:30 PM ET

The Broncos should have their top two running backs available when they head to San Diego on Monday night.

Correll Buckhalter says his injured ankle is "90%" and that he will definitely play against the Chargers. Josh McDaniels may still list Buckhalter as questionable, but his expected presence will help Denver's quietly effective running game. San Diego's defense was run through Rashard Mendenhall in their last game and Buckhalter leads the NFL with 7.2 yards per carry on the season.

The Giants-Saints game is flashier, but no Week Six game has bigger implications than Broncos-Chargers. Denver can take a commanding three and a half game lead in the AFC West over the Chargers with a win; the two teams face off again in Denver in Week Eleven.

The Chargers put themselves in a similar hole last season, but 8-8 is unlikely to be good enough for a playoff berth this time around.
