Costco Love <3 (1 Viewer)

My family and I love the adventure of big moves. We have moved over the ocean twice. I'm embarrassed to admit, but when we house shop the location of Costco is a factor. I currently live 2.5 miles from one. Ha ha
Username suspect…
Ha ha. I was in Bosnia, 1999, when message boards really were starting. I went on the boards to pass time late at night. Started using that username during that time and it's been that since.

Starting to lose some faith in my beloved Costco.

First, the new scanners at the entrances are a complete disaster. It took me 18 minutes to get in the door on Friday when I arrived at opening time. I understand the need for it, I guess, but they have to figure something out. It's the most inefficient process I've ever seen.

And, now, their Detroit Motor Company frozen pizzas that are so great? Yeah, they're still great. And the same price. Even though all of the sudden they're about two-thirds the size that they have been.

I don't know why I thought Costco would be any different. The shrinkflation going on in this country right now should be criminal.

I haven't had a problem with the scanners yet.... walk in, walk by, scan and keep going. No difference than before when you flashed your card though I did notice that they only have one scanner which seems like it is just asking for problems like yours. At least one on each side like they do with the people checking the receipts when you leave to make it more efficient.

My buddy has a company that makes a bunch of store branded stuff such as Trader Joe's (one of his products is the Jalapeno Sauce there which is AWESOME and if you have not tried it and like heat... go now to your nearest Trader Joe's and pick one up and thank me later). We was telling me how EVERYTHING has gone up so much. I don't remember the exact numbers but it wasn't just 4% inflation but it was like multiples of what it use to cost. They have conversations with the stores all the time where the stores know that their costs are going up but they are trying to keep the costs down for their customers and he has his bottom number that he has to make to be profitable and that number means the price goes up in the store. Inflation sucks.

I will also express a disappointment. I have long been a fan of the ZippFizz that I get at Costco. I would drink one every morning. Now, my previous understanding was that B12 was a water soluble and you could not take too much so I didn't worry about the 1,000% of daily value of B12 in it.... well.... it not being something to worry about isn't the case. You can have too much B12 and it can cause some issues and some studies have linked it to potential particular cancers. My doctor had ordered a bunch of blood tests and one was the B12. Normal range is 200-500..... mine was 2,233

Now, it wasn't ALL the ZippFizz as other things I would drink during the day had some B12 too but 95% of it was the ZippFizz... so I went cold turkey off of it. Not really a Costco complaint but just a product I use to get there.

But when you have that many 85-year-olds for customers, it's not that simple. They just had to show a card to a human before. No way to screw that up. Now they have to hold it right for the scanner to read. And that's apparently a bridge too far for some of these people from what I've witnessed.

That is probably the difference there.... my store doesn't have a ton of elderly. Pretty solidly middle aged families.

Wait, what?? I have one in my freezer right now. Didn't notice anything. Maybe it was from before the change.

Pretty good frozen pizza though. Sucks they don't carry the cheese bread any more.

just yesterday i stopped at costco and bought a 1280 pack of tombstone pepperoni pizzas which was a problem since i dont have the freezer space luckily they had a deal on five packs of full size chest freezers so now my electricity bill has skyrocketed is the punchline to all of this but pizza is served baby take that to the bank brohans

but even the middle aged families bring the kids like it is a trip to the park. Then mom doesn't start getting the card out of her purse until at the scanner.

I don't get too much of that to the point it is a problem. I usually have one or two but very rarely now three of my kids with me... however, I do this crazy thing that is a lost art and mystery to people. Have common courtesy and being mindful of others around me.

Saw a stat the other day that said 66% of Costco member are boomers or gen x. We old!

According to Investopedia, 66% of Costco members are either part of the Gen X or Baby Boomer generations

They represent 40% of the population so outsized rep for Costco.

Millennials are known to get married later, have children later and buy houses later... likely they are also getting Costco memberships later too

I could see the scanners causing a delay at opening bc people like to line up. Otherwise don't see a problem.
I'm never going at opening again. And doesn't anyone have a job??????

Last summer I was in the area of a Costco and pulled it, it was about 5 minutes before opening. I walked into their closed in area by the front door and thought what is going on?

There were at least 75 people waiting to get in. I was last and asked the door person about it and she said they start lining up around 30 minutes before doors open. Costco is big..so when doors open they disperse fast. No need to wait..Get there 5 minutes after they open and no line.

I agree does anyone work? Costco is jammed all day long! Best time I found is around 5pm, or about 30 minutes before closing. But no free samples at those times.

As a long long time Costco truther, I've learned that a mid afternoon, weekday, a few weeks after the coupon book hits is my sweet spot. At opening? Zero chance. Ha ha

Yea... never been at opening. I have to think that is a busy time for the old people to go.

never been at opening but find myself there most frequently on a Saturday afternoon. place could have 700 people in the checkout line and somehow you still get through it all in 5-6 minutes. scientists should study the traffic flow.

The checkout lines do fly no matter what. It's amazing. That's why I'm so vexed by this new entry system.

One of handful of advantages from moving from Hawaii to Georgia has been the Costco experience. Maui Costco was literally a war zone. It started in the parking lot and getting a cart then continued the entire trip finishing up at a bottle neck check out. Ringgold Georgia? Just wonderful. Might have had to wait to check out a couple times out of 100. Just magical.

I’m with you. I get my card out before and I’m already 5 feet past the reader when it beeps. I’ve never had to wait more than a couple people which was there before the reader. Same goofballs that can’t get the card out early.

I have seen no difference with that pizza yet. I’ve gotten it a few times as my boys and I like it. I’ll have to check next time.

Is it worth the membership fee for just a single household?

I had a membership more than a decade ago when I was married. But now single and deciding if I should re-join.

yearly membership is like $120 these days (maybe it varies by location, not sure). worth checking out for a year to see how you like it now, i'd say.

Two tiers:

$60 and $120. The $120 you get a small % (forget if 1 or 2) back on your total purchases at the end of the year and apparently some other benefits I never use.

$60 is one time easy access to the store and all the vacation and car buy program things.

Most stuff you can buy and not waste... I would not buy much produce type stuff there or anything else with a short shelf life that you don't consume at a high rate but 100% worth it if you like saving money.

I'd say I spend about $75 per week but I buy just about all my groceries there. The 2% back with the executive membership covers the upgrade. Get the citi card and you get another 2% and 6% on their already low gas.

Filling up the gas tank each visit alone makes it worth it for me. And the "Executive" tier gives a rebate and add in the Costco Visa for more money back. Those more than cover the cost of membership.

I really don't think you will save anything on beer there....there's no booze at the Oregon locations (which, I'm sure you know) and you won't save anything driving up to Washington if that's your thought for hard alcohol. I've priced it out and Costco isn't cheaper for beer over Trader Joes or Winco or Rite Aid, which has some real steals on things like Buoy IPA and Sunriver Vicious Mosquito. You're not killing it on wine either - Trader Joes has Costco beat there too.

"I did not know that"

Okay - that probably makes my decision. No go.

There's really no location that is convenient for me to make that many trips...gas, groceries, etc. I'll continue to stay in my little corner and buy local. kthxbi

You can always go with me to Costco if you want to check it out. There's one not too far from Orchard if you wanted to swing by after a round. Close to TEK too. It's just SOOOO damn crowded and the shoppers at this location aren't much for recognizing personal space of other shoppers. They aren't very good drivers at this location either, so the parking lot is just a shade worse than a demolition derby.

Well it depends on the wine. Costco tends to have much better high end wines than TJ's, at least in my experience (Bay Area, Dallas, and Chicago)

I'm not in the high end demo for wine, so you could be correct here.

But thanks man.

After hearing about how great the pizza is- we had their pizza for the first time the other day. Inedible. Two bites and the whole thing went into the trash.

Sacnning before entering done except when there’s a logjam of carts when someone doesn’t have their card ready/accessible. Some panic and turn tail and flee before returning with their card ready.

I want to complain about paying for a membership and being accosted on the way in by sales weasels peddling their phones when you enter but they’re always friendly enough and not pushy.

What gets me is the stupid receipt check on the way out. I literally just bought everything 30 seconds ago and only waked 75 feet. Maybe corral off the register exits so we can just exit from the store efficiently.
