NFL Rumors & Notes

Here's something to picture as you look ahead to the offseason: Michael Vick in a Raiders jersey. A lot, namely a trade and a lot of salary cap details, will have to happen in the meantime. But this one makes perfect sense, and it may be just what the Raiders need to revive a franchise that's faltering. The Falcons, who have given Vick every possible chance, will be willing to part with their quarterback. Despite his outrageous talent, he hasn't produced on any sort of consistent level and tensions are at an all-time high in the Falcons organization. The crescendo may have come Sunday when Vick made an obscene gesture at Atlanta fans who ridiculed him as he walked off the field. The Falcons gladly would take draft picks for Vick, who clearly needs a fresh start. And what better place for Vick than Oakland, where many a renegade has prospered? Picture Vick throwing to Randy Moss. Picture Al Davis smiling again. Even on his bad days, Vick would fit in Oakland.

Vick's #ers might not be so atrocious if his receivers could catch. Look what Randy did for Culpepper!

This would certainly help the raiders...(they don't deserve capitalization)...Tell me why it won't happen, I know you want to.

it wont happen because the salary impliactions are horrendous to the point where Vick is virtually untradeable. Maybe Moss to Atlanta would be possible, but they didn't want him last time he was available, so I'm not sure that his lackluster years in Oakland will have the Falcons brass dying to have him this time around. I really don't think Vick is going anywhere

But Moss wants out of Oakland and he has not done anything to make me think the Raiders want to keep him for the money he is making.

Trade Moss to Atlanta for Vick?

know what else would be awesome?? tom brady on the Jets!! yea!!! and then the jets could trade Lav Coles to the Skins!!! could you imagine?? Lav Coles and Santana on the same field!?!?

know what else could happen?? Marino might come back and play for the Dolphins next year!!!!! then Chambers may actually stop sucking for 10 minutes!!! nah... that's impossible.

know what else is impossible? for these threads to add any value. Ben Maller's job is to make stuff up that people will read. it has no basis, no merit, and no chance.

With Matt Schaub there, I might do that. The raiders would have to give a little more, but I like that idea.

You mean aside from the salary cap implications, the Falcons fans burning the Georgia Dome to the ground, and Randy Moss sulking a gasket every time Vick has more rushing yards than passing? I can't see a single problem!

What s all this hype with Matt Schaub ( If you think he will be starting someday , your wrong )remember Billy Volek ( Actually Volek has proven he could start in this league and not Schaub )

I stopped reading here. Obviously the guy who wrote this is a moron who doesn't know anything about the salary cap.The Falcons can't cut Vick without mortgaging half of Georgia, and the Raiders can't keep Moss without mortgaging half of Oakland. Now, if you'd have said "Moss in Atlanta"... you might have something....

I saw this trade speculated @ PFT earlier this week. I don't know how accurate the salary cap numbers are for Vick, but the speculation at least gives fans something to talk about.

POSTED 10:14 a.m. EST; LAST UPDATED 12:09 p.m. EST, November 28, 2006VICK TRADE COULD BE PULLED OFF, AFTER JUNE 1Although we saw images of an apparently contrite Michael Vick apologizing for the images of an obscene gesture he aimed in the direction of paying customers and their kids on Sunday at the Georgia Dome, the broader question remains, as we see it, whether Vick's time in Atlanta is drawing to a close. We predicted, even before Vick's meltdown, that he'll ask to be traded after the 2006 season. But the prevailing sentiment in league circles is that the Falcons would be unable to trade or release Vick, due to the salary cap ramifications arising from the big-money signing bonus he received a couple of years ago. We've gotten our eyes on his numbers, and the prevailing sentiment is accurate. To a point.Trading Vick before June 1, 2007 would trigger a mind-numbing cap charge of $22.25 million. The dead money, factoring in the $6 million salary Vick wouldn't be paid in 2007, would be $16.25 million. However, if the Falcons were to make the move after June 1, the cap charge for 2007 would drop to $7.57 million, with a net hit of $1.57 million. The transaction would actually create $6 million in 2007 cap space. The problem would arise in 2008, when the Falcons would be hit with $14.68 million in cap charges. The dead money, based on a Vick's salary of $7.5 million, would be $7.18 million.Still, if the salary cap gets to $115 million by 2008, the dead money would be roughly six percent of the team's available player payroll for the season. And by 2009, he'd be completely off of the books. So if Vick wants out, and if the team is willing to let him out, a trade would be feasible after June 1. (Greg Aiello, NFL spokesman, tells us that, although the new CBA allows the cap hit for a trade made after June 1 to be spread over two years, the rule that allows teams to release up to two players before June 1 and process the move as a post-June 1 transaction does not apply to trades.)Of course, the bigger question would be whether anyone else would be willing to take on Vick's contract, which has salaries of $6 million in 2007, $7.5 million in 2008, $9 million in 2009, $10.5 million in 2010, $12 million in 2011, $12.5 million in 2012, and $13.5 million in 2013.Our guess? There's a certain team that wears silver and black with an owner who has always loved renegade players (especially really fast ones). How about Randy Moss and a third-round pick for Vick? Moss has said wanted to come to Atlanta in 2005, and we believe that the team wasn't interest in Moss primarily because they weren't interested in creating a scenario in which, with a high-end receiver, Vick would have been further exposed as an underperforming passer. With Matt Schaub elevating into the position of starter, Moss is the kind of guy that the Falcons would want on the field, especially in a West Coast attack that thrives off of a field-stretcher who can open up the underneath routes. And from a P.R. standpoint, the Falcons would be swapping out one NFL icon for another. So the seats in the Georgia Dome would still be filled, at least for 2007.Like many other things, this one makes far too much sense to ever happen.

As the PFT article explains, Vick can feasibly be released, but that is unlikely. Not because of the salary cap, but because of what he means in revenue to that franchise. Its far more likely that Moss will be released by the Raiders, as his contract will have to be renegotiated for him to stay, and thats not going to happen. Id say its possible we could see Vick throwing to Moss, but in Atlanta. And not with Jim Mora Jr as the HC.

Actually it's not. He does like the FBG blogger and references things written by others. If you follow the link, you'll see this was taken from Pat Yasinskas of the Charlotte Observer. He's the one who is making stuff up that people will read.

I agree. One of the coolest moments of the offseason following the 2003 season was reading Adam Schefter's idea (without any sources) that the Broncos should trade Portis for Champ ... and then seeing the actual teams pull that trade off just a few days later! If legitimate writers in the know are looking at the trades from all sides before they write everything out, chances are that the teams' GMs are already a few steps ahead.

Vick needs a fresh start and I am sure Atlanta would love to unload that contract but due to cap reasons Vick is untradeable.

This post is accurate.Even if Vick were in Oakland, Moss wouldn't be.

The only thing Moss would bring to Atlanta is yet ANOTHER WR without leadership experience with one of the highest drop percentages in the league. Note - the Falcons already have three of these.

I'd rather see Oakland trade Moss for New Orleans for their O-Line - it has given up fewer sacks/pass attempt this year - and watch them rise to an 8-8 team overnight. Hell, Atlanta could pull off the same trade, have Schaub start and win the NFC South. That's where these teams' real problems lie.

Moss will end up in Jacksonville.

Mike Tice told him to sit down in an airplane and got a head coaching job out of it...

This is true, and stupid, which is why they will end up together again.

Vick to Oakland? Nope, Shaub to Oakland...maybe...

I don't know if the cap numbers or trade matchups with fit, but I could see Miami, Kansas City and Washington in the mix. Miami - His brother Marcus is already there (practice squad or special teams?) It's a large market so maybe his endorsement opportunities jump up a little. Harrington is not the long term answer and Culpepper might not ever get back to his old form after being hurt. KC - Trent Green is old and Huard might not be the long term replacement they need. They've always had a strong O line and a good offense. The WR pool there is thin, but I guess Vick would be used to that by now. Washington - Can't ever count the Redskins out of anything. Campbell might not work out and Snyder likes his high profile players. Snyder is not afraid to pull the trigger or spend. And Vick would be a marketing bonanza for him.
WHAT?Harrington is going to start in Miami for five years if he keeps playing like this, and there isn't the fan support/financial backing to pull in Vick to Miami. And a word to the wise... ATL is a very large, young, and growing market - his sponsors are fine.KC does not have a strong o-line, especially post-Willie Roaf. Ask Trent Green, but he may not remember the answer. Ask Larry Johnson fantasy owners, who have seen his numbers drop a bit from last year. And the coaching staff there is too old school for Vick's style of play.Redskins maybe. But I doubt Snyder would bring him up. And you still have the problem at the offensive line.
