Craigslist Jeep Wrangler Scam (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
So I was perusing Craigslist looking for my next project Jeep. Came across what I pretty much knew had to be a scam, but, nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

So I emailed 'her':

I am very interested in the Jeep, is it still available?

My number is XXX-XXX-XXXX

Thanks

Hour and a half later I received the following reply:

Hi,
My name is Michelle, happy to see you are interested in my 2004 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited . This jeep has never been off road or in any accidents ever. This Jeep has always been loved and cared for. I am the original owner and this jeep is exceptionally well maintained and garage kept. Everything functions as new. The price is $3,500. Why is the price so low? I just had brain surgery. They found cancer cells in my brain...Hopefully I am on the road to recovering..It has been devastating to my husband who has recently left me.. My medical bills have shot out the roof so I need to sell it asap. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I will answer with pleasure.

Please use the link below to see all pictures with the jeep: REMOVED BECAUSE I"M STILL MESSING WITH THEM

Thank you,
Michelle

Obviously now I know it is a complete scam. I decide to slow play it.

I am very sorry to hear that. You still could get a lot more for the jeep than you are asking.
Where is the jeep located?

Very quick reply by "Michelle":

Hi again,
This is an urgent sale, so this is the reason for selling it so cheap. I moved to Tacoma WA. The jeep is here and it is already at the shipping company in Tacoma sealed and ready for shipping. For the payment I would like to use Amazon as a third party. They will keep your money into a protection account until you get the jeep and will release it to me after inspection period is over and you agree to keep it. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the jeep before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 5 days to inspect it. If you decide not to keep it, Amazon will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back will be my concern. I think this is more than fair for both of us.
I need to start the official procedure and Amazon will contact you about this. If you are interested in buying the jeep just mail me back with:
- Your Full Name - Required by Amazon (You'll receive important guidelines + instructions from them.)
- Your Shipping Address and Phone Number - Required by the Shipping Department (They will call you with delivery/pickup instructions 1 day ahead so you can communicate what time schedule work best for your to receive the jeep).

Thanks, hope to do business with you soon!

Was having a couple of drinks and decided to reply back to really see how big of scumbags these guys are. I decided to send the following:

That is more than fair. But, honestly, I couldn't live with myself buying the jeep for that amount. Sounds like you have been through so much. I would like to pay $5000 for the jeep. I think that is a fair price and I want to help you out with your mounting medical bills.

I know where you are coming from. I recently lost my mother after a 3 year battle with cancer. We don't have much but, I was left $5000 from her estate. I want to honor her memory by helping you out with the extra $1500. This jeep will be a living testament to her memory. My daughter will be driving this vehicle. My daughter and mother were inseparable. My daughter never left my mother's side at the end. As heartbreaking as it was, she would not have it any other way. Most spectacular thing I ever saw from a 15 year old girl.

Nothing would mean more to her than having this jeep as a first vehicle when she gets her license in a few months.

It's like this was a sign and was meant to be.

Let me know if this is agreeable and let me know how to proceed.

God's Blessings

No way they believe that reply, you wont hear from them (although I hope we do). They get screwed with all the time, I've been there and done that myself

Had some more Jack Daniels, checked my email and received the following reply:

Thank you so much. I am very sorry to hear of your lose, stirs many emotions, my sympathies to you and yours.
Like I said, in order to start the transaction, first of all I will need your full name, phone number and shipping address so I can open an Amazon case regarding our deal, they will give you all the details that you need to complete the transaction.

Thanks and get back to me asap!

This really pissed me off. C'mon man, I don't have much but I'm going to give you an extra $1500 as a living testament to my dead mother and that is all you can reply with!

Finish my drink and went to bed.

Didn't think much of it this morning being busy at work.

Until I received the following email:

Hi,
Let me know if you still want to buy the jeep, so I know what to do next.
Thanks,
Michelle

I was going to let it go, but what the hell, I'm all caught up with my work.

Well, my wife and I got into a pretty good fight last night. She thinks this is too good to be true.

I guess I can see her point.

She had an idea and I guess I will pose it to you.

If you mail me $50 cash in "good faith money", I will then proceed and set up the account. I will then pay $5050 total for the Jeep. This will give you back the $50 you send.

I think this will really put her mind at ease, and in the end, you won't be out anything as I will just increase the purchase price by $50. She said it has to be cash because she doesn't trust checks.

I feel bad asking you to do this, but she just wants to protect ourselves a little bit. I certainly do not want to add any more stress to your life, but I really do believe this will help move things along. Without doing this, I will not be able to buy the Jeep. Again, I'm sorry, it is just to give my wife piece of mind.

Please let me know if we can work this out.

Thanks

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that your story will only make them think you're more of a sucker. Folks who do this have no morals. They won't blink at your cancer story. You could say that you're going to use the Jeep to make sammich donations to orphans and they wouldn't care.

Agreed.

And also, that is the plan. I can only hope.....

My buddy's dad almost got scammed buying a trailer full of tools for a too good to be true price (sick kid story or something). Had the ebay guarantee BS

as his dad was on the way to send a Moneygram he luckily asked if he actually verified it on EBay and that was enough of a red flag for him to call ebay and they told him it was a scam

lol, this could be fun..in 2 weeks tell michelle you and your wife are heading for a divorce due to this issue.

She accused you of having an affair with Michelle...

"My wife found our emails...you may be getting a phone call (possibly a visit)."

"She thinks Jeep is code for "deep d cking" "

I was a little worried I hadn't heard from her for a few hours and then received this:

About our deal I assume we are 2 mature persons who want to make a fair deal.I understand you are a little concerned from this point of view but this is not the case. I think this is more than fair. But you need to provide them the downpayment confirmation of the 50% of the entire amount, prior to shipping .I hope you can understand me and also I hope we can finalize this deal in the best manner. Amazon is responsable for the security of this transaction and you have nothing to be worried about. The payment will not be sent directly to me, but to them, so they can hold the money for you until you receive the jeep. The 5 days inspection period begins the moment you receive the jeep delivered at home and not before. You will have time to inspect it before you decide if you buy it or not.I think that is enough time to test it .In case you don't like it(but I'm sure it is not your case) Amazon will refund you in max 24 hours.

Damn, my sweet, cancer ridden Michelle is nothing but all business at this point. I decided to sweeten the deal for her:

Trust me, I would like nothing more than to proceed with the deal at hand. Unfortunately, unless I receive $50 cash sent to me as a good faith gesture, I cannot proceed with the deal.

I understand by requiring this, I may very well miss out on this tremendous deal. But at the end of the day, I need to respect my wife's wishes. Even though I know this transaction would go through perfectly, I know I would never hear the end of it.

Like I said earlier, I'm sorry to have to ask this of you while you are in this condition. I can't believe I'm going to do this, but if I raise the price of the Jeep to $6000, would you be willing to send the $50?

I thought it might be a little extra incentive to have you complete this. I just really don't want to lose out on this deal and really believe that $6000 is still a good value for the Jeep.

So I'm willing to pay you $1000 more and all you have to do is send me $50. I think that is fair.

I will not be telling my wife about the added $1000. I will secretly take it out of my daughter's college fund. I don't think she will be able to find out.

Please work with me here. I've already almost doubled your asking price. I need $50 cash sent to me or else I won't be able to proceed with the deal.

Please let me know what you think.

So how many miles are on the jeep? If you keep dicking around with her I'm just going to buy it myself.

Do you know where the "jeep" is located (being shipped from)?

Say that you told the story to your daughter and because it's only X number of hours away and with her summer break starting today, we'd like to come see you in person and deliver the money personally. This way we can test drive the jeep and my daughter can give you her condolences in person.
