Curtis Martin and Fred Taylor are Busts! (1 Viewer)

Z, I read you brother. The very beginning of this thread I said that Jordan had become a short yardage specialist. He is basically becoming Moe Williams II. Martin as your #2 vs S.Davis, C.Dillon, T.Barber, J.Lewis...you get my point. I know Martin is still a #2 in larger leagues but he is not going to ever win you a game on his own it seems. Days of 120 yds and 2 TD are far behind him now.

No problem BS, I take them as well as giving them. I am sure everyone will let me know. It's not like a have something personal against these 2 but they just seemed due for disaster based on what is happening around them. And I hate Paul Hackett. I am sure ***LA is fond of the former USC man too.
You are right about surrounding situations for both players, and while i think Martin is still an decent back, he is in no way capable of producing without a supporting cast. On the other hand, Fred Taylor is a player who could produce with 10 sacks of potatoes surrounding him on offense, as long as he stays healthy.

Conway looks rough too. Wasn't he an early top20 projection on the FBG site? And others too? Projections stink.
C'mon MOP. Your analysis was very good - you don't have to reach for Conway as well. Ya think Pennington to Testy may have hurt Conway's projections since then? Think he fell like a rock in drafts since Pennington's injury? Uh, yeah....

You're right. But I don't think any of us were buying CC as a top20 WR or even top25+.I take it back if it really bugs you.

It might be a good time to trade for Fragile Fred. Only 2 more games before JSmooth returns (I think.).
what are you talking about taylor needs smith backvs the bills they went to the pass game and it dident work and i was pissed cuz taylor dident get carriessmith will pick up 1st downs and keep them in more games than without him and give fred more carries

What I'm talking about is that there is NO guarantee that Smith will be back after 4 games.

Taylor does not even seem to be an option in or around the goal line. 0 TD from both of these guys. They cannot be helping owners win games. If you have them with Priest Portis or Lewis than fine, but many drafted Taylor as a possible #1.

You should probably add Ladanian Tomlinson (he no longer deserves LT2) to the list. AND he was a consensus #1. :wall: (frustrated LT2 owner)

Taylor has done very well the last 2 weeks for me. I'm in a 1pt/rec league. I think Taylor had 5 rec today. No way he's a bust.

Want a season killer?I have LT & dillon in 1 leage, and Edge, Taylor and Martin in another. Thought I was going to be deep at RB and able to trade for other needs about now, and I'm basically fXXXX'd in both! I'm just hoping my contest entry & suicide pool keep me interesded the rest of the season.... :bag:

Did I get your attention? Good, because if you are drafting this weekend I would make it a point to not have to take these 2 RB unless it is absolutely necessary. I am going to talk about both of them and why I think that neither one is going to help you a whole lot.Curtis Martin: Plain and simple. The Jets already were ransacked by the Redskins and lost one of their best weapons in WR Coles. Now we find that they are without Chad Pennington, a much better WCO QB than Vinny T, their backup. In essence they are down 2/3 of their big 3 on offense. So now we are asking Martin to make up for Pennington and Coles. I realize he had an injury at the beginning of last season but when Vinny was in the game, with the WCO being used, Martin looked horrible. I am not even implying that Jordan will unseat him. In fact Jordan is showing that he is more of a short yard specialist in this offense at the moment. Curtis Martin does not have the breakaway speed needed to bust big plays anymore, IMO. Now teams are going to be game planning to shut him down. Can Vinny throw a bomb to a streaking Moss down the sidelines? He will have to in order to stretch the defense. The problem is the Jets have been using the WCO and Vinny is not suited for it. Lots of QBs are/were not. Marino, Fouts, Elway, Moon, none of them were meant for WCO. If the Jets go to a different playbook, I think it would wreak havoc on their WR corps who will be adjusting on the fly. None of this is good for Martin. What was his upside anyways, really? 1,100+ rushing and 6 TD? Maybe 50 catches too for another 350 yards. I think that was his upside. You see Martin's upside no longer outweighs his possible downside, IMO. Martin could also struggle mightily to even hit 1,000 rush and might not get many TD in a punchless NYJ offense. Fred Taylor: Let's see. The #1 WR is suspended for 4 games. There really is no #2, #3, #4, behind him that are worth a crap. Than you add in a lameduck QB that was trying to be dealt to the team we just talked about which means a couple of things.1. Brunell does not have it anymore at all which means the Jags are going to be even more 1 demensional.2. The Jags are rebuilding and don't care to keep Brunell at all. They might even go with Leftwich by mid season. This is not good for Freddie T.Fred Taylor does have that big game breakaway speed. He has not, I repeat not had multiple TD games since 2000. It is now 2003. I think the Jags were a much better team in 2000. Also Mr. Taylor has a medical record that is as long as Martin Sheen's arrest record(63 and counting for various protests he is in). And we have found out he has not always played through injuries other backs would have. I am not throwing it in the guy's face but he makes me very leery of taking him.Bottom Line: Curtis Martin and Fred Taylor fell to the end of the 3rd round in almost all the drafts I was in the past 2 weeks. I think there is a good reason for that. Just because a guy falls 5-10 spots below where every mag and site says they should be, does not mean that you have to find them a home on your squad. Why did the other 10-11 owners in your league leave him alone? Because the upside is not there for gigantic seasons for either of these RB. You have been warned: Proceed with caution friends.

Following up on this prediction:

Fred Taylor ran for a career best 1572 years and added another 370 yards receiving, just falling short of 2000 total yards.

Meanwhile Curtis Martin totaled 1308 yards rushing and another 262 through the air, for ~ 1600 total yards.

Neither scored many TDs but the argument was that these guys weren’t good bets as 3rd rounders.

Verdict: 🗑️

To be fair, it was 2003, back when most leagues were TD-only or TD-heavy. Our little game has come a long way.

Now I feel old. I remember this thread. That's the scary part about FBG. You get out of prison for murder after 20 years. But here? We can drag out a discussion for 22 years and never get out.
A man can build 1000 bridges, but call CMart a bust on FBGs and when you walk by, do you think will point and say “hey, there goes that bridge builder!”?

Curtis Martin was no rookie in 2003. Hell, I watched him and the Jets lose the AFC Championship in '99 (?) to Denver when I was just out of college. Martin was getting a little up there by then.

I drafted Martin and Terrell Davis as rookies in 1995 to my Dynasty team. Heckuva rookie draft!
