Jets RB Martin status is unchanged

KEN BERGER

Through six days and nine practices, Curtis Martin is still not practicing. On most days, he's nowhere near the field, hidden instead in the forbidden zones of the training complex, presumably preparing for his 12th NFL season.

"His status really is unchanged," coach Eric Mangini said yesterday when asked when the NFL's No. 4 career rusher will be removed from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. "The timetable is as soon as he's physically able to, we'll get him out there."

Martin's unusual absence has fueled speculation about his future. But a person familiar with the team's thinking said yesterday it appears that Mangini is simply trying to spare Martin, coming off December knee surgery, the punishment of his grueling camp.

"He is beating the hell out of his players," said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "Curtis is an elder statesman. He's leaving him out of it."

Mangini appears to be cut from the Bill Belichick cloth in many ways, including his belief that players should practice only if they're physically able to practice fully. In New England, safety Rodney Harrison is coming off knee surgery and also is on the PUP list.

It's an angle, but I somehow doubt that Mangini is beating his players up any more than Martin normally beats himself up in the offseason. I do believe that if Martin could be out there, he would be out there. We know that Martin hasn't recovered quickly enough to do his conditions. We know that Martin is old and high-mileage. And he's not even outside doing any kind of conditioning work. As I see it, Martin is a risk to miss the beginning of the season, and it wouldn't surprise me if he's already started the last game of his career.

to me, CMart now makes a good value play around the 8/9 turn in redrafts, as he won't be up to full speed and in football form until the 2nd half of the season.

And at that, since the Jets won't be competitive, it's quite possible that even if fully healthy he may not see the field all that much, since Mangini will likely want to see what he's got in his backfield for '07.

It bums me out because I really liked a healthy CMart to hit the 1200 yard marker and move up on the all-time rushing list.

Guess it's just one of those fairy tales with a prison rape ending.

What kind of books did you read as a kid?

Where do you explain the value in 8/9 in the rest of your post? Sounds more like you think he should not even be drafted to me.

I was thinking the same thing. He talks about value at in the 8/9 and then all the reasons why the guy won't produce much... :loco:
