Paging Dr. Bramel. Looks like I just lost Desmond Bishop for the season. I still have DJ Smith on my roster from where Bishop was out last season. He had decent numbers when Bishop out . Where do you have him ranked this season?

He's telling people to pick him up on twitter. Said he's the kind of LB that can start for many teams. Not just a backup.

Averaged nine stops a game in three starts last year. Assuming he starts I think he's at the very least an upside LB4, and that's taking into account that Bishop could come back later in the season. Be VERY thankful you kept him around.

I actually mentioned on a podcast with Greg Kellogg a couple weeks ago after the calf acted up that Smith might be worth a late "handcuff" pick of sorts in deeper IDP leagues for Bishop owners. Didn't know this would happen obviously, but I'm sure as h**l glad I hedged my bet in a couple spots.

I asked him on Twitter earlier today where he valued DJ and unless something changes, I believe he thought of DJ as as belonging in the "LB2 tiers with a high floor with some upside."After hearing that I rushed out to add him to my roster after I put Bishop on IR. I'm hoping for the best with Bishop, but I gotta have a backup plan just incase the news isn't the best.

I was hoping he'd beat out AJ Hawk and reports from camp are he's earned a starting spot. From Appalacian state he is short and dropped to the 6th round in the draft but is instinctive like Bishop. He was a rookie last year so is a little raw but has looked good in camp.Last season he did start for Bishop In 4 games he had5 solo 1 assist6 and 2 "7 and 3 and 1 interception7 and 3 "

Will he be a 3 down LB?
No reason to expect otherwise. He isn't an elite coverage defender but he filled that role effectively enough last year. Unless there's a veteran signing capable of taking over or platooning with Smith, he should be worthy of every-week LB2 lineup status.

New story on him.

If Bishop does come back I think Smith will make it hard to bench him.

If that happens both Smith & Bishop were 6th round picks that replaced 1st rounders.

That's what I'm most interested in trying to forecast; if Bishop CAN come back this year(which I know is far from a given), does Smith remain a starter/viable dynasty hold going forward? Didn't Hawk just re-up a year ago for a bundle?

Yes Hawk is being paid a lot compared to younger players but coaches have complained bout his lack of playmaking, last year even worse than 2010 and I think would replace him if they had a better option. They already pull him out on many passing downs.

Is DJ Smith now an LB1?
Probably a little premature to say that but I think you can say, at his floor, he's a solid LB2 with something to be optimistic about for more.I think the real tell-tale sign will be his use on 3rd down. I'm trying to think back to last year when he had that month he filled in and it seems like Hawk was also out for some of that time and the Pack started Smith and Francois. So I'm kind of wondering if at this time they will rotate Francois in. That would make a difference but overall, Smith should be a nice player.

How are you feeling about him from a dynasty perspective? Is he a long term prospect you would want to commit to for 4-5 years at a lower salary, or is he more a redraft guy?

Jene, Norton and Larkin all have him at 28 for redraft, but not on anyone's top 60 for dynasty (though Jene's aren't up).

I would agree. I would hope next year he plays with Bishop over Hawk. He's a very instinctive playmaker but not the bog hitter Bishop is.The last few years they used a lot of 2 man line and that may change this year with the added bodies. I think we should look at what they do in the next 2 games. A lot of injuries at the moment though.

The way it stands now, ILB D.J. Smith will play 100% of the downs for #Packers. No. 1 dime (over Hawk). Trying to fill Desmond Bishop's role

This guy is around the ball every single play. I might be a bit of a homer but anyone watching this game I am sure sees the same thing. Tackling machine

Sounds the same as last year when he filled in. I think there was early criticism of his height before he played but on the field, I always thought he did well.Didn't see the game alst night but heard he was doing well.

The problem I'm having, and I have to decide in 11 days, is what to apply to him for contract years. Any Packers homers know his chances of taking over for Hawk in 2013?

Same position for me.I'm hooking him up to a 4 year deal.

Great info here. Thanks. I've been busy with work and this thread has helped immensely. I managed to snag Smith and will slide Bishop to IR if (when) he goes there.

I think Smith puts up low LB1 / high LB2 numbers this year. I will continue to pick him up in my leagues. I think he will get moved over to the other ILB spot in 2013 when Bishop comes back. Buy Now.

That will be quite the dilemma next season when I have to decide to roster just Desmond Bishop, or keep Bishop and add D.J. Smith.

Seems to have a kanck for tipping passes Woodson and Hayward returned for TD's. Now if he could only tip the to himself.

I believe he did have a pick last year in one of the games he started.

Yes he had one-he's good at getting his hand on passes in TC. I'd expected a couple, a couple sacks(maybe 4) and a few PD's and FF's.

I saw Brad Jones came in for him. new 3 down LB?
Im done with packer MLB's this year. I lost Bishop and stuck him on IR, and now Smith is done for the year as well? I'll ride out the rest of the year with other LB options...Packer MLB position is snakebitten this year it seems.

(FFChamps)Packers linebacker D.J. Smith is out for the season with a knee injury, according to Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Analysis: The injury is believed to be a torn ACL. Smith had 39 tackles, two sacks and four passes deflected in six games.

It's a terrible shame. He was such a solid, underrated LB. It'll be interesting to see which two of Bishop, Hawk, and Smith will start in the middle next season.

Assuming health is not an issue, Bishop will be one of GB's ILB next season. Hawk's role is only at risk if he underperforms significantly over the remainder of the season due to his large salary. D.J. Smith put up decent numbers replacing Bishop but he wasn't as stout against the run as Bishop (who is very good) and DJ was exploited on a weekly basis in coverage.

There is potentially value to be had here, I wouldn't give up on this position. Hawk isn't great, whoever is the other MLB could have the potential for some very nice numbers.

That's actually what I'm wondering about.

Does Hawk have more value with Smith out?

He's on my WW, but I'd have to drop Perry Riley for him...

I dont think Hawk WAS worth it before Smith got injured, but now I'm wondering, but have nothing to base a decision on.

Anyone have any input?

From what I recall, when Bishop and Hawk were both out last year (maybe the year before..it all runs together), Smith (guess it had to be last year) and Francois manned the position and Francois was pretty good. Now, he held down the Hawk role, not the Bishop, but he as pretty good in coverage.

So, I'm guessing that it will be Jones for 2 downs, Francois to spell him and if he looks like he did last year, he could push to take the open spot.
