When they are content to dink and dunk down the field, Dallas is your man.
This is the way defenses have forcing the Colts to play. They play deep zone and prefer the slow death of completions underneath to allowing Marvin and Wayne get behind them.Clark can be a very clutch recieving option at times and I do think the 2TE set is a formation that helps thier running game (especialy thier favorite run the streach play) as well as helps Manning read the defensive coverage pre-snap when they use shifting and motion. The 2TE formation also makes the defense think again about going into nickle packages because of greater threat of the run.All of these things work in Clarks favor and Clark has proven very capable of taking advantage when the matchup dictates.Last season was an ideal situation for him in that the Colts really had no 3rd WR that was reliable to work with. The also were working in a rookie RB so pass protection was a greater concern this leading to more 2 TE sets. Clark (or another TE) staying in to block does not help his fantasy success however.I expected Clark to do much more with this situation last year than he did. He was injured again and missed 4 games (25% of the season). What he ultimatly achieved was 30 catches 367 yards and 4 TD for the year. But that only tells half of the story...In the playoffs no other reciever gained as many yards as Dallas Clark. Not Marvin, not Wayne, not some other reciever from another playoffs team. Dallas Clark. And really it was not even close.Clark gained 317 yards on 21 catches over 4 games including the super bowl in the playoffs. Yes friends that is averaging 79 yards/game over 4 games. What if the Colts used him in this way during the 4 games of the season that he missed due to injury?Clark could have had a season of 51 catches 771 yards 4 TD. That being said the Colts seem to save Clark like a secret weapon for the playoffs when games matter most. I think his performance was also a product of matchups. His 9 catch game against Kansas City shows the weakness of the cover 2 defense (which Dungy taught Edwards) against the TE down the seam. Clarks other big game came against the Patriots Big but slower inside linebackers. Another matchup to exploit for the Colts by using Clark. So is it possible that Clarks playoff performance will carry over into the regular season and other mismatches like this will be exploited by using him? I think it certainly is. And if Clark can stay healthy perhaps he will have his best season to date in year 5 of his career. That may even propel him into the top 10 for TEs. However I do not think the drafting of Gonzalez should be underestimated either. The Colts clearly like to diversify thier offense using combinational 2TE and 3WR sets to keep the defense off balance. Gonzalez is a decent blocker in his own right amoung the other skills that he has. So having him in 3WR sets may not be as much of a liability for the run game as you might think. Also Addai has a year of experience now and may be counted on more to pick up blitz packages than they could rely on him as a rookie. Thus freeing up more 3WR possibilities.I see OC Moore and Manning as very crafty game planners. Always looking to stay a step ahead of what defenses may try to force them to do. While defenses will probobly continue to try to make the Colts move down the field in shorter incriments using cover 2 and zone packages to bracket the outside WRs thus giving matchup advantages to Clark. These defenses will also be attacked using 3 or 4 WR packages as well. Gonzo allows them to do this again. As an aside I see Gonzo working out of the slot for now while eventualy being groomed to replace Marvin Harrison once Harrison decides to retire. That will take time. Both Marvin and Wayne have taken awhile to refine thier games with the Colts. Steadily improving each year until reaching elite levels of performance. I think Gonzalez is the type of player who can follow thier path to success.
