Don't mess with Texas
Hello gents,

I will be posting any news are notes from the Cowboys Camp as it pertains to Fantasy Football. Many don't have the an oppurtunity to hear the Press Conferences like myself (it's slow at the restuarant this time of the year :D ).

Some of you have some fantasy interest in T.O, JJ vs MBIII, Witten, Bledsoe, etc.. I'll provide as much as I can from all the sources I can.

So the outline will go as follows:

Press Notes

Players Notes (Only in the respect of fantasy football)

QB

RB

WR

TE

Some interesting things happened in camp today and said as it pertains to an issue that we'll be dealing with throughout camp and possibly the season, i.e JJ vs MBIII

Also some interesting things with T.O

I'm leaving the restaurant heading home will post when I get there.

Here was BP's PC for today. We signed Fredrickson, a punter and we waived Merritt, Horne and Parker. Our roster is at 82. Pierce will go on waived/IR today. He’s a punter. I don’t want to overkick McBriar in camp.

Was Justin Bariault leaving the field serious?

He got hit in the head.

When will you kow if you need an extra kickoff guy. Vanderjagt says he won’t practice kickoffs until next week.

I’ll just wait and see what happens.

Do you want to use him as a ko guy?

I really do want ot use him as a ko. It saves a roster spot. What would you call his job description?

Field goal specialist?

What else do they do in addition to that? Kickoff? I’m not rying to be funny.

Keith Davis

I think I know what I have with Keith. He’s an aggressive player. He’s fought his way on the team and I have respect for him. I know he’s a very very good ST player too. We want to create competition with the position, and that’s what we’ll do.

Has it surprised you how well he played after the accident?

No, I expected him to be ready to go.

How are you rotating centers? Gurode snapped with the 1st team.

That’s a waste of your time. It will be hard for you guys to keep up. Not just Gurode, I made 5 moves on the OL today. I’m just trying different combinations.

Does that mean that Al Johnson is struggling?

I don’t think you can go into 4 days of practice and surmise who is or isn’t struggling.

Are Gurode and Johnson even?

I’m open minded now.

As Al added size this offseason?

He’s tried very diligently to increase his size. Every year this happens because Gurode is bigger and we play a 3-4 in practice every day and that favors Gurode, but when we go to a 4 man line Al is able to do what he does better. Its not a matter of anyone being better, but Gurode has a little advantage against a guy like Fergie in practice, but might not have an advantage on other players.

Julius Jones shown anything to make you think he’s improved?

I don’t think its wise to make that judgement until you see game action. I know he’s trained hard and in good condition. He seems relaxed, but you can’t judge it too much right now.

Do you like the size of your LB’s finally?

I don’t think it will ever be the way I want it. Its headed that way. You just can’t put enough guys together at once. I was lucky to have a group of guys once who was just the ideal of how you want it. I’ve had 2 guys at once other places, but its hard to get 4 guys who can do everything the way you want it.

Why do you like size in LB’s.

Look at the size of TE’s you play nowadays. There are two groups .. the receivers like Gates and Cooleys. These guys are in the high 250-260’s. There is another group, Carolina has a two TE’s that weigh almost 280 lbs. So the on-line confrontation gets to be very phsyical for a 230 lbs guy. That’s not to say that some guys haven’t been able to do it. Truthfully, we were very interested in Manny Lawson this year in the draft. But he was slender. He went to SF who also plays he 3-4. We thought maybe a year or two from now he would be what we were looking for. Whereas Ware and Merriman were pretty much there right now.

Kozier?

Bruce DeHaven was coaching at SF when he was there. Im not putting it all on him, but its always good when you have someone who knows the player. Then we watched him at Detroit, and he started there all season. We watched him on tape, we thought he did well. And we thought he was in our economic range. He’s replacing probably the best guard to ever play for the Cowboys, maybe the player to ever play in the league at that position. He’s right there at the top. It would hard to be as good as that, but hopefully we’ll be good enough.

Bobby Carpenter’s dad?

Robbie was a good player for us. I liked him a lot personally, and his wife Susie. I knew Rob was coaching, but it didn’t really … I just knew the kid had been in a home where he would have to toe the line and do the right thing. That’s really all you need to know.

Create competition at FS, do you think you have that?

I think Watkins has a real good chance to be a good player, if that’s what you’re asking. He looks very slender, but he’s 211 lbs. and with some good nutrition and weight training he’ll be in the 220’s soon. I don’t know how big you want him without losing speed. He’s got a lot to learn and a little green.

(The ticket cuts out)

I don’t know, I think he as an all aroudn athlete and to go to that school and just play for a couple of years as a starter … that takes some doing. I’ve always liked players from that school myself, having coached there. I know the defensive coaches there work their players hard, and usually the transition physically is not that big.

Harry Carson in the HOF? Do you think it took too long?

We did a thing for him a few weeks ago in NY. I’ll say the same thing here I said there … This ought to be a cinch. I know I’m prejudiced because its my guy, but I’m also a LB coach by trade. I watch a lot of film of all LBs. He was a tremendous player, and as good as anyone in his era. Ask Belichick, Shotty .. we’re all former LB coaches … and I would tell media members “ask someone who really knows what this guy can do and compare him to some players who are in there”. I think enough people finally did. He was a tremendous physical specimen. 250+ lbs, ran a 4.6. Great hitter. Smart player. Tremendous instincts. I could go on forever. There have only been 2 other guys I know of who have gone from defensive tackle to LB… Matt Millen and Levon Kirkland. I’ve seen some defensive ends make the transition, but defensive tackle to LB? And play in 9 Pro Bowls. Everyone he was playing against must have knew he was good. I like that he’s going in with Taylor, so that’s two of them. I’m proud of them.

You said you thought the defense will beat up the offense for a while. When do you expect that to change?

It turned around a little bit here the last couple of practices. The defense is usually always ahead right now unless your defense is no good. The next 4-5 days is really the hardest time of the NFL season, becaue there’s no games coming down the road and not a lot to looking forward to other than more heavy practices in pads.

How is Bobby picking things up?

Well. He’s smart.

Backup QB reps?

I’m playing Tony a lot this preseason. I got to figure out where he is in this world.

Where do you think he is now?

I think he’s ready to play a lot. I’ve been around him for 3 years. He makes less and less mistakes in practice. Had we thrown him to the wolves two years ago, we would have ruined his career, but now he has enough background and training and understanding that its time to go forward. So hopefully we can do that.

Why do you think a QB can be ruined?

Its just like boxing, you put a fighter in the wrong fight early in his career and it can ruin him. Tony is a little bit of a renegade gunslinger, so he would have been error prone. He would just see something he thought looked good and just sling it before. But he reminds me of a few players I’ve had before. That’s always good.

Is this preseason a test for him?

Yeah, I would say so.

What if he fails?

He needs to go to a new school. That’s what every player on this field has to face.

Would you look else where on the roster if that happens?

We would in the meantime, but we’re always looking lesewhere. We’ll see what he can do. I think it has a chance to be positive right now, whereas I didn’t think it wold have been 2 years ago.

Where is Henson in that equation?

We’ll see what we can get out of him too.

What gives you confidence in Romo since you’ve never seen him in games?

I just told you. He reminds me of some players I used to have. Rutledge. Cavenaugh. Babe, you played with Rutledge didn’t you in Washington? He took your place? He must have been a better holder than you.

Has Henson not progressed?

No.

The percpetion is you don’t think higly of him.

That’s a misperception on your part. He hasn’t played much football, so we tried to create a situation on him where he gets some more exposure before we put him through his test.

Do yo uthink that one game against Chicago stunted his growth?

No.

Where do you think Terrence and Roy are as far as upside.

I think he’s got a big ceiling. I have a lot of admiration for Terrence. I think he’s one of our very, very, very best players right tnow.

What about Roy?

Roy can play on my team anytime too.

Was Terrence gooned out of Pro Bowl position last year?

I’m not familiar with that term.

I’m trying to avoid saying “screwed”.

Here’s what I’ll say … he didn’t give up a TD pass last year. Go find another one in the league who didn’t. There may be one, I don’t know. But he didn’t give up one.

Do you want to use him as a ko guy?

I really do want ot use him as a ko. It saves a roster spot. What would you call his job description?

I swear, Bill Parcells is one of the funniest mother####ers on the planet at a press conference.

Ouch! Talk about your blocks.

Sorry for the delay, I had two grass fires to deal with yesterday. Thanks bg and others for posting. Here we go:Areas of concern: OL, in particular Flo Adams. He favors the bad knee when he runs, but is destroying everyone in one on one drills. Flo was/is the key to this OL if he should re-injure his knee, IMHO is going to be a long season fantasy wise.Press Conference Notes from the Glorified Gym Teacher (Bill P): He talked about getting MBIII more involved in the offense and in special situations. The rest, at least IMO, has no implications for FF.RB: JJ is looking good. On three different drives they handed him the ball and he dashed for 80 yds = 240 yds.WR: T.O. (as it pains me to write this) is looking good, in particularly after the catch. Over the weekend he scorched the secondary. But Monday they put Newman on him and they were going at it pretty good.Crayton is having a spectacular practice catching everything in sight and showing great body control on the side-line passes. *********If you’re in a Dynasty…………keep him on your roster.T. Glenn and Bledsoe are hooking up on a consistent basis.TE: Everyone is saying Witten looks quicker and has been catching everything that comes his way. So far Fasano is giving the LBs a hard time. The buzz on def (for you IDP guys) R. Williams A. Glenn, Ware, Burnett, K. Davis and Newman have been getting a lot of buzz especially Burnett and R. Williams.Rookie safety Patrick Watkins is one to keep an eye on, he looked good yesterday, broke up a few passes and picked off two passes. Parcells: "I think Watkins has a chance to be a real good player. We are encouraged by what we have seen so far." ... Parcell wants him to get up to 220 pounds, he’s currently 212.Other notes on the JJ vs MBIII watch:

Jones is in his third year as a Dallas Cowboy, and when you're playing for Bill Parcells, that means it's time to either put up or shut up.Or, more likely, hit the road, Jack.Jones, who even heard his name whispered in trade rumors this past off-season, would rather not do that."It's a big year for me," Jones admitted after a recent practice session at Cowboys camp. "Parcells likes to see what a player can do in their third year."He gives you three years to prove something. I still have something to prove."Julius can rest assured that he has Parcells' full attention in that endeavor."I just hope I see an improved player, a guy who has a little better sense of timing and what we're doing," Parcells said. The thing Big Bill didn't add to that observation -- the "or else" -- is understood. This needs to be Julius Jones' year. What does he have to prove?"Everything," Jones replied. "That I can stay on the field. That I can be an all-down back. I've got to prove that every year."It's especially important this year, entering a season in which the Cowboys have high expectations of not just making the playoffs, but of making a run for the Super Bowl. It's no secret that Parcells will trot out his tried-and-true formula of building his team around a strong defense and a reliable running game. That's where Jones comes in, of course."I'm hoping he can be a key guy for us in that respect," Parcells said.
"You see more backs by committee than ever before," running backs coach Anthony Lynn said. "A lot of that is to keep backs healthy. Last year, Julius averaged about 71 snaps a game, and he wore down. It may have led to his injury. I don't know."If we can get Barber in there more to split the time, give him a breather, I think we have a better chance to get both backs through the season."Lynn is convinced that Jones can be a bona fide NFL star. If he can stay on the field."If he can stay healthy, you're going to see a very productive back," Lynn said. "When he's been on the field, he's been productive. You can't take that away from him."You saw it last year in Carolina. When he's healthy, that's what you see."It's understandable that Parcells would be somewhat skeptical after Jones' first two injury-plagued seasons, but he would be wise to consider the extent of Jones' upside before turning him into a part-time back.None of the Cowboys' other backs has Jones' explosiveness or ability to turn a game around on one play."He's a threat on the second level," Lynn said. "Anytime he's on the second level [in the secondary], he's got a chance to take it to the house. A lot of backs in this league can't say that."No, they can't. It's what makes Jones special. This is the year he needs to show the Cowboys -- and especially Mr. Third-Year Parcells -- just how special he can be.

As a Dallas fan I'd like to see more Barber. He has some kind of "it" that Jones doesn't have when you absolutely need 3-4 yards.

From yesterday:
On 3rd down he called for MB3 to replace JJ. Kevin Burnett ran a blitz up the middle and went right past MB3 to sack Bledsoe and Parcells screamed at MB3 "why did I even put you in here"?!
 Trash>>>>Dallas OLWatkins = Stud, I'll say it again, "IF YOU ARE IN AN IDP DYNASTY, THIS IS YOUR MAN!"

P.S

Mike Vanderjagt missed practice because he was sick. Parcells isn't sure if the kicker will be out there for the afternoon workout. He's missed five of his first 12 kicks. And the Cowboys' kickers combined to make 1 of 8 tries Wednesday morning with all but one kick missing to the right.
The idiot kicker missing a lot of practice and field goals.

I'll add some....

Fabiani is stinking it up.

Petitti is winning the RT battle.

Gurode looks to be beating AJ for the Center job.

Watkins is the man!!!

Sleeper to watch...not this year, but in the future.

Brack Hurd.

Football: Brack's Hurd earns praise, has chance to make Cowboys

Web Posted: 08/02/2006 11:09 PM CDT

Tom Orsborn

Express-News Staff Writer

OXNARD, Calif. — Terrell Owens played catch with Sam Hurd the first day of training camp.

Now, Owens is calling Hurd a great catch for the Dallas Cowboys.

"He's going to be a great player," Owens said Wednesday.

Hurd, an undrafted rookie free agent from Northern Illinois and a Brackenridge graduate, has emerged as one of the surprises of camp.

"He's doing fairly well," coach Bill Parcells said. "He's green and he's young and a rookie, but he's in good condition and working very hard and has a little bit of ability."

Hurd's size — 6-foot-2, 195 pounds — is a plus, Parcells said.

"I'm very pleased with him," Parcells said.

Owens, another big receiver at 6-3, 224 pounds, has become a mentor to Hurd after the two warmed up together Saturday during the first camp practice.

"Obviously, he's a big guy, a big body," Owens said. "I try to tell him some of the things I had to hang on when I was a rookie, especially blocking situations, because we're long-striders."

Size isn't the only thing Owens likes about Hurd.

"You can't say enough about his hands," Owens said. "He's got great hands."

Hurd is competing with Miles Austin, Terrance Copper, Jamaica Rector and J.R. Tolver for a roster spot. The Cowboys are likely to keep five or six receivers, with Owens, Terry Glenn, Patrick Crayton and rookie Skyler Green assured spots.

I was at camp both Saturday and Sunday, and Owens tossed the ball around with Hurd both days and it seemed that he was taking him under his wing...

How's Austin look?
bump, Big Tex?
Hello Bri so far it's like this: Owens, Terry Glenn, Patrick Crayton respectively followed byTerrance Copper, and Skyler Green would have to make the team as a return man. So, Sam Hurd, who Parcells said has good hands, Jamaica Rector, Austin and Tolver are battling for a few spots. P

P.S

Bill Parcells has told kicker Mike Vanderjagt about the Mendoza Line, which in baseball is hitting below .200. We don't know Vanderjagt's field goal kicking stats in camp, but I doubt he is under 20 percent."I haven’t asked him anything other than if he’s habitually below the Mendoza Line," Parcells said. "He didn’t know [what that was], but he knows now. I was just teasing him, of course."
The idiot kicker was 3 for 4.

How are you rotating centers? Gurode snapped with the 1st team.

That’s a waste of your time. It will be hard for you guys to keep up. Not just Gurode, I made 5 moves on the OL today. I’m just trying different combinations.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

When I am rich someday, I am going to pay Bill to come to a lunch with me and my friends and ask him asinine questions. Even if he was hunched over in a wheel chair, sucking oxygen from a tank, he could still make the person feel like the stupidest person on the planet.

Bill rocks.

I'll add some....Fabiani is stinking it up.Petitti is winning the RT battle.Gurode looks to be beating AJ for the Center job.Watkins is the man!!!Sleeper to watch...not this year, but in the future.Brack Hurd.=======================================================Football: Brack's Hurd earns praise, has chance to make CowboysWeb Posted: 08/02/2006 11:09 PM CDTTom OrsbornExpress-News Staff Writer OXNARD, Calif. "He's green and he's young and a rookie, but he's in good condition and working very hard and has a little bit of ability." Hurd's size — 6-foot-2, 195 pounds — is a plus, Parcells said. "I'm very pleased with him," Parcells said. Owens, another big receiver at 6-3, 224 pounds, has become a mentor to Hurd after the two warmed up together Saturday during the first camp practice. "Obviously, he's a big guy, a big body," Owens said. "I try to tell him some of the things I had to hang on when I was a rookie, especially blocking situations, because we're long-striders." Size isn't the only thing Owens likes about Hurd. "You can't say enough about his hands," Owens said. "He's got great hands." Hurd is competing with Miles Austin, Terrance Copper, Jamaica Rector and J.R. Tolver for a roster spot. The Cowboys are likely to keep five or six receivers, with Owens, Terry Glenn, Patrick Crayton and rookie Skyler Green assured spots.
I'll echo this -- I attended Cowboys training camp today and the offense overall looked flat. The one guy who impressed me the most today was Sam Hurd. He has good size, he displayed great route running, positioning, and control, and he has really good hands -- he made a couple of great catches along the sidelines today in practice with the DBs all over him. It will be interesting to see how he pans out this season, and he could be a good sleeper candidate, especially in deep drafts.

The buzz on def (for you IDP guys) R. Williams A. Glenn, Ware, Burnett, K. Davis and Newman have been getting a lot of buzz especially Burnett and R. Williams.
Good to see Kevin Burnett's name listed coming off of a torn ACL in December.

The OL is trash because the backup RB can't pick up his block?

It's trash because Flo is still having some issues with his knee. Flo is the anchor of the OL if Flo is not healthy and no other Lineman pick up the slack (none have at this point), all positions will suffer from a fantasy stand point. The reason I posted the quote on MBIII is because some think he's a better blocker the JJ and that's not true, he's struggling a little bit picking up the blocking.

I see where you guys seem to agree that Crayton is the WR3 on the team. What exactly do you think his role will be as the WR3, and will he definitely be the guy to step in and replace TO or Glenn if they go down to injury?

I don't really see a big year statistically. Maybe a game or two where he takes advantage of the coverage of the other guys. I just think there will be too many double TE sets for him to see too much action. I really like his upside, but I just don't know that there is enough balls to go around.I could see him covering for Glenn, obviously nobody can fill TO's shoes.

How is Cris Canty comming along? What about Justin Bariault? Watkins is outshining him?
Chris Canty had two sacks Saturday. The first one was a coverage sack, but on the second one, he just exploded past an offensive tackle. Canty even did a strange-looking sack dance after the second one.
It's remarkable to watch a 6-7 guy with this much quickness. Canty and Spears have the talent to become one of the best DE tandems in the league.
Justin has been out the past few days with a concussion, he's falling behind. It's going to be tough to catch Watkins. Watkins has stud written all on his face at this point only the vets or outshining him and that's only because they are seeing more snaps.Keep an eye on S. Hurd:
• The Breakout Player Award goes to...The pride of Northern Illinois University, Sam Hurd. I know you've already read about Hurd several times on this blog, but on Saturday, he took his game to another level. Besides T.O., this kid may be the most athletic receiver on the roster. He leaped high above Nate Jones to grab a 26-yard pass from Drew Henson. Later in the drive, Henson hit him in stride down the right sideline for 31 yards. When we asked chief scout Jeff Ireland which players stood out to him, Hurd was the first name out of his mouth. By our very unofficial stats, Hurd had five catches for 95 yards. Now, I'm not telling you to run out and draft him for your fantasy team. I'm just saying it's becoming harder and harder to keep this guy off your roster.
Some are saying the only WR more talented then Hurd is T.O. It seems like every practive or press conference something good is said about Hurd. :pics:

Crayton is without a doubt #3, many didn't understand why T.O had to be brought in (I included) ,w/Glenn, Meshawn, and Crayton T.O is/was not needed. Crayton and Hurd (if he keep playing the way he is) are no doubt the future of this team.

More notes from the scrimmage:

Scrimmage - Rants & Raves

The Cowboys conducted a no-tackle, intersquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon, and here were my observations:

Rave: Marion Barber was the outstanding player of the afternoon. He ran well, caught the ball well, and ran after the catch well. Barber was quick and elusive. This guy may force Parcells to give him more carries than just those designated for the 3rd down back.

Rant: The first team offense continued to struggle. Of course, Owens was still out, but is this a sign of things to come in the event Owens should miss games due to injury.

Rave: Don't think that the first team offense was merely a victim of being smothered by the first team defense. Tony Romo led the 2nd team offense down the field and into the end zone against that very same 1st team defense. Romo moved around in and outside the pocket and got rid of the ball quickly and accurately.

Rant: Bledsoe seemed to get sacked (tagged) way too often. The protection didn't seem to be much different from 1st to 2nd team which makes me wonder if Bledsoe is just holding the ball too long. Only the coaches know, but Romo just seemed to get rid of the ball quicker...

Rave: Young Sam Hurd made two outstanding catches. In both instances, he leaped over the defender to grab the ball and managed to hold on to the ball while going down. All of those after practice sessions with T.O. may be doing some good. Patrick Crayton and Terrence Copper beware!

Rave: Finally, Vanderjagt showed the consistency that we all expected. He made good on two kicks and one extra point. Maybe his mid-week sickness allowed him to have fresh legs today.

Rant: The defense seemed to commit an inordinate number of penalties. The best drive that Bledsoe and the 1st team offense could muster was aided by a series of penalties from the defense that took them within the 10 yard-line before having to settle for a Vanderjagt field goal.

I've happily got him squirrelled away on my dynasty roster, though the signing of TO would only seem to work to delay his development, which is frustrating.
