Dark Side of the Moon — find me a better album and I’ll kill you, you liar (1 Viewer)

:loco:  Two of the most influential albums of the last 50 years.
I remember my grandfather telling me such sweet stories of when the album came out. Him and my grandma were just starting to date at the time and they would listen to it after getting ice cream for a nickel. Boy, they loved that album. He said they would dance the charleston to it almost every night. They were such a sweet couple.

Otis obviously scored himself a dime bag this week, started threads about the Doors and Dark Side.

I believe he is also a big GnR fan. I suspect minus the occasional days when he tokes up that he listens to very little music normally and I bet he sees it live at best once a year. Sure, his wife made him get tickets to see Billy Joel at MSG (and I dare you find a guy who puts on a better live show -Otis).

I personally enjoy the strong takes but it is coming from a guy that I suspect is very much a music novice.
Played in bands as a teenager and into my 20s.  Took piano lessons for a few years growing up then switched to guitar in my early teens. While I mostly enjoyed classic rock and then current rock, I also had a rap phase somewhere in there, as most people did (I still listen on occasion today, mostly at the gym). Thought about music school for college, at the suggestion of my guitar teacher, but my parents wouldn’t have it. Studied jazz and classical guitar as electives for a couple semesters in college. It was in college and then law school that I fell in love with jazz. Now that’s probably what I listen to most for the past 20 years, followed by a mix of classic rock, modern/alt rock, blues. I listen to music for 2.5 hours a day during my commute and then in the background much of the rest of the day while I’m working; in addition to the 45-60mins in the gym (again, mostly just rap stuff there).

You’re right, I don’t see live concerts much.  Probably less than once a year. And I’m a huge GnR fan. I’m not a professional musician like BigBottom and don’t play my guitars nearly as often as I would like these days, but music is and always has been a pretty tremendous part of my life.  I suspect more so than for your average person. These days I obsess over Kenny Burrell and Ron Carter and Miles and Wes, but I can appreciate the hell out of the Doors. And DSOTM is still the best album to ever grace your ears.

Good day sir.

There are quite a few albums I'd put above DSOTM

If I had to start with the same band, I'd nominate Animals

But a slew of Led Zeppelin albums are better, how about Led Zep 1

Sticky Fingers

Electric Ladyland

The only reason DSOTM is more beloved long term than Wish You Were Here is because everyone wanted a cool black prism poster for their dorm rooms.  That’s right, I said it.

I always find these kinds of threads so entertaining. It all just comes down to personal taste (and obviously everyone recognizes this despite the mostly tongue-in-cheek responses).

I'm a die-hard Led Zeppelin fan and could easily argue a few of their albums as best ever. Conversely, I'm not a die hard Floyd fan; I've only listened to Animals/Wish You Were Here a few times in their entirety and The Wall somewhat more. Yet I consider DSOTM to be the best ever. Like others, the only song I hate from it is "Money". The rest is gorgeous music, lyrically and sonically. I consider it art at a level that exceeds other fantastic music. That's just me, a layman compared to some of the true connoisseurs of music in here.

Both Zeppelin and Floyd are phenomenal bands, but it's like comparing apples to oranges. You could get into a transcendental space with Floyd, even without the psychedelics whereas Zeppelin might have been good to get a buzz on with, but didn't make you contemplate much.

That being said, I have fond memories of tripping balls when 'The Ocean' came on when the volume was set to volume 11.

This is it. It’s just a level of artistry above everything else, as a complete album, as music, as lyrics, as moods.  It’s profound and powerful. When you sit and listen to the lyrics and the melodies it just hits you in the gut. It makes you reflect.

Huge Zeppelin fan here, but Black Dog and Rock n’ Roll ain’t doing that. Neither is Master of Puppets or any of the other great albums mentioned in here. This is just different.

Pink Floyd is one of those strange bands for me. I know people love them and all, but to me they are just an awful boring band.

I just want to shoot myself when their music comes on.

No idea why. Just not the band for me.

World needs ditch diggers too.

It's been mentioned only once in this thread but worth repeating ..... Animals (Pink Floyd)

Possibly the best album ever....period.

Memories of tripping balls at the Planetarium to this album. My late brother’s favorite band. Gilmour’s solo in Time is his best IMO. All-time great album for sure.

Dark side of the moon is absolutely excellent--but not my absolute favorite. I could totally see how it would be for others though.   Michael Jackson Thriller tops it for me.  My all time favorite album is Lateralus by Tool so I'd even put that slightly ahead of it--but I do realize that my taste in music is awkward and sucks.
