Dark Side of the Moon — find me a better album and I’ll kill you, you liar (1 Viewer)

World needs ditch diggers too.
Yeah, you're right. And I guess I'm one of those guys. It's clear from a socio-economic scale you and I are on different planets. I am a contractor, so in effect I am a ditch digger. You are a successful lawyer that dictates (directly and indirectly I guess) what the ditch diggers do on a daily basis.  We are literally here to serve YOU, and other influencers that cannot do menial things themselves. And that's cool. I chose this life years ago and I'm a pretty happy dude. And conversely, you have always seemed to be a stand up dude here, and it seems to me you have a good heart overall.

But Pink Floyd is a weird band. Everything I ever hear from my friends, message board friends here, co-workers, etc, are things like this:

  •  Man they sound awesome when you turn down the sound to Wizard of Oz
  • Love this band, especially when I've had a few psychedelics and some booze
  • These guys were great live. Me and my buddies were smoking some great weed that night
So you have a band that requires a silly movie and drugs/alcohol to provide a memory of a "great" band. Now, before we get into the argument of "well, they are still a great band despite all that", well, sure they are. They are great musicians. They have talent for sure. They write songs that are thought provoking and intense. But for a stupid contractor like me, I like to judge my music on more levels than "man I fell in love with them that time in college when me and this girl were high on LSD."

For me, music challenges every emotion. Every album should make you cry, and laugh, and think deeply about yourself, and shake your head in wonder about how in the hell did that play that with that note with those words. Every album should provide an escape from something, no matter what that something is.

I know Pink Floyd does that for you guys. That's cool. It's your thing - not mine. But to discount a ditch digger because he is just a ditch digger is sad to me. It speaks to an elitist attitude where if you don't like what I like, you belong in that lower tier where you know you belong.

I love music man. Just not your music today. And I still think you are an alright dude.

Everything you just said is wrong.

Including the part about my contractor answering to me. Around here we have to beg and plead to get them to show up; they can milk us for whatever they want; and in the end, really, they’re the boss. Absolutely the career I would go into if I were to start from scratch.

Oh and you’re wrong about DSOTM too.

Dark Side of the Patio Expansion — find me a better contractor or I’ll kill you, you liar

I prefer Wish you were here or Animals. Even the Wall takes you on a bigger roller coaster if emotional turmoil. Dark Side is still great though.

Played in bands as a teenager and into my 20s.  Took piano lessons for a few years growing up then switched to guitar in my early teens. While I mostly enjoyed classic rock and then current rock, I also had a rap phase somewhere in there, as most people did (I still listen on occasion today, mostly at the gym). Thought about music school for college, at the suggestion of my guitar teacher, but my parents wouldn’t have it. Studied jazz and classical guitar as electives for a couple semesters in college. It was in college and then law school that I fell in love with jazz. Now that’s probably what I listen to most for the past 20 years, followed by a mix of classic rock, modern/alt rock, blues. I listen to music for 2.5 hours a day during my commute and then in the background much of the rest of the day while I’m working; in addition to the 45-60mins in the gym (again, mostly just rap stuff there).

You’re right, I don’t see live concerts much.  Probably less than once a year. And I’m a huge GnR fan. I’m not a professional musician like BigBottom and don’t play my guitars nearly as often as I would like these days, but music is and always has been a pretty tremendous part of my life.  I suspect more so than for your average person. These days I obsess over Kenny Burrell and Ron Carter and Miles and Wes, but I can appreciate the hell out of the Doors. And DSOTM is still the best album to ever grace your ears.

Good day sir.
well be that as it may, you water down quality scotch so your opinions will always be suspect to me

You just have a preconceived notion that possibly has altered your feelings. I love them and have never tried any drugs and don't think i have ever watched the wizard of oz in it's entirety.  I will say I can see how drugs could alter the listening experience.

They're not for everyone. They are one of the few bands i consider put out art, not music.

I get them not being someone's thing because the sound just doesn't do anything for them but to not be your thing because of preconceived notions of why you think other people like them so much seems misguided.

Amazing all-time album. "Although it held the number one spot in the US for only a week, it remained in the Billboard album chart for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988." - Wiki

I'll still occasionally laugh similar to the laugh at the end of "On the Run" when the mood strikes.

Otis recycled content is often—no offense—better than some of the other garbage posted here these days.

HTH

oh and I’ll take a link or it didn’t happen
Not going to spend the time searching for it. You were in some airport bar popping wood over dsotm.  It happened.  Good thread anyway.  Just was curious if you remember doing this before.
