Darren Sproles Thread (1 Viewer)

So I just saw on the Fox Sports 1 ticker Sproles signed an extension through 2016, and found a link: http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sports/eagles/Eagles-extend-Darren-Sproles-through-2016.html

I like him for 2014, but through 2016, we have to assume he's 100% outside the tackles to last through the contract, right? Thoughts on dyno with that said? Age scares me a lot, but if he's a total reception only RB, where do we see him value wise? Initial thought is a 1-2 year max rental for FF in PPR, low RB2/high RB3 for that 1-2 years if his touches are all short passes. I need time to process this one personally for forecasting.

I wouldn't read two much into the extension. Without seeing the contract details I'm going to assume only this year is guaranteed.

I agree, but think Brown or Polk get the ship out of town after what they gave to Sproles. Sproles is clearly the #2 now.

I wouldn't call him a #2. They will be on the field together with some nice Chip Kelly formations/schemes-which also means that just because he gets a reception doesn't necessarily mean that McCoy loses one. That offense is going to be scary.

The New Orleans Saints had trouble deciding whether to trade or release Darren Sproles at the onset of free agency.

What's clear is that they viewed his $3.5 million salary as no longer palatable.

If the trade to the Philadelphia Eagles was a hard pill for the Saints' brass to swallow, it hit Drew Brees even harder.

Having played with Sproles in San Diego, the quarterback was instrumental in recruiting the former Chargers scatback to New Orleans.

"I think a Darren Sproles only comes around once in your lifetime, in my career and in everybody's career," Brees said Monday, via Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo. "There may be another one 15, 20 years from now. But there's not many guys like Darren Sproles. He's a special player, he's a special person, he's a special teammate."

A close inspection of Sproles' career to date suggests Brees wasn't engaging in hyperbole.

An exploitable mismatch against linebackers and safeties, Sproles has been the most effective receiving back since Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk was in his prime over a decade ago. Sproles also holds the NFL record for most all-purpose yards (2,696) in a single season, evidence of his value as a dangerous kick returner.

That's not even including Sproles' impact as a runner.

In short, the NFL hasn't seen a player like the versatile 5-foot-6 dynamo since Lionel "Little Train" James' one-hit wonder season with the Chargers in 1985.

If Brees wants to look on the bright side, he can take solace in the fact that his team just got the best three-year span of Sproles' career for the same annual salary the Eagles are paying for the decline phase.

At the risk of falling into the sinkhole known as the fallacy of the innocent past, it's worth pointing out those salary considerations rarely drove painful personnel decisions back when "Little Train" was tearing through defenses.

I like both runners at that production.

I don't think Sproles will eat into McCoy's rushing touches. If anything, he'll take away Bryce Brown's carries. Sproles isn't really a great rushing threat.

As far as receiving goes, he might eat into some of McCoy's catches, as they may put Sproles in on 3rd and long situations. I think this move impacts Brown/Polk more than it does McCoy.

McCoy led the NFL with 314 carries in his first season under Chip Kelly. The signing of Sproles is going to cut more into his receiving game usage and third down snaps than his rushing workload. Sproles had just 53 carries in 2013, but was fourth among running backs with 71 receptions

Over the last three seasons with the Saints, Sproles averaged 9.54 touches from scrimmage. But he'll turn 31 next month and is losing some juice to the corner on base run plays. Sproles' main role in Philly will be to beat linebackers in man coverage and fill some of the pass-catching void left by DeSean Jackson. He's not going to eat into LeSean McCoy's workload. Sproles is a RB3 in full PPR leagues and will be overdrafted in standard scoring formats.

LeSean McCoy optimistic about addition of Darren Sproles

Eagles featured back LeSean McCoy has claimed that the addition of Darren Sproles will prove beneficial to his own production. McCoy cited overwork he experienced in 2013.

"I think 366 touches is a lot," he told ESPN. "Being in the prime of my career and bringing in a guy like Sproles who can do so much, we'll work well together. I think having me fresh in the fourth quarter with fewer carries can be even more dangerous."

I put no value into the pointless blurb.

Just because a writer thinks he will get 6-8 touches means nothing. Also with what they are paying him and the loss of Jackson, I dont see how this can be accurate. i expect his touches to go up in Chips offense.

Coach Chip Kelly has been insistent that he views Sproles first-and-foremost as a running back, but catching passes remains where he'll make his biggest impact. He finishes the preseason with nine carries for 44 yards, and three catches for 17 yards. He's an RB4, though a viable FLEX play in PPR leagues.

2-3 rushes and 3-4 catches per game sounds about right to me :shrug:

Darren Sproles rushed for 26 yards and one touchdown on four carries in the Eagles' 30-27, Week 2 win over the Colts on Monday night, adding seven catches for an additional 152 yards.

Sproles was simply unstoppable. He had Eagles beat writers calling it one of the best running back performances they'd seen in team history. Sproles reeled in all seven of his targets, and shook a Colts defender in the open field before pinballing off three others on his way to the end zone on his 19-yard touchdown run. We didn't see this Sproles in New Orleans last season, and Philadelphia snagged him for a fifth-round pick in the offseason. Coach Chip Kelly is an offensive mastermind, but not many saw this type of usage for Sproles. He's a legitimate RB2/FLEX option every week in all formats. Sproles has 263 yards and two touchdowns through his first two games as LeSean McCoy's No. 2.

The McSproles combo straight up won me my matchup single handedly. The guy is electric and is just too quick and has a change of direction that defenders just can't handle.

Truly is the NFL Swiss Army Knife.

Darren Sproles rushed seven times for 51 yards in Sunday's Week 5 win over the Rams.

Sproles showed plenty more juice than LeSean McCoy (24 carries, 81 yards), but Chip Kelly showed no intention of expanding Sproles' role. Even after McCoy lost a ridiculously careless fumble, Sproles was a change-of-pace back only. Over the last three games, the Eagles offense has run 194 plays and Sproles has touched the ball 15 times.

Darren Sproles suffered a left knee injury in Sunday night's game against the Giants.

Sproles was able to walk off under his own power, but the Eagles team doctor was "concerned after they tested the stability of his ACL and MCL." He'll undergo further tests, at which point more will be known. Sproles had seven carries for 39 yards and a touchdown before exiting. With Chris Polk sidelined, the Eagles don't have any heathy running backs behind LeSean McCoy.

Darren Sproles will have a Monday MRI on his twisted left knee.

Following Sunday night's win, Darren Sproles (knee) told Chip Kelly he was OK. That likely means that Sproles believes he has avoided a ligament tear, but it doesn't mean he's avoided an injury altogether. The MRI will determine if any of his ligaments were sprained and to what degree. With Chris Polk (hamstring) also sidelined right now, the Eagles may be in the market for a backup runner during their Week 7 bye.

CSN Philadelphia is hearing that Darren Sproles (knee) will probably be out a few weeks.

Beat writer Geoff Mosher reports Sproles did not suffer an ACL tear when his left knee awkwardly twisted Sunday night. It sounds like some kind of sprain, possibly to his MCL. We'd consider Sproles doubtful for Week 8 when the Eagles come out of their bye.

Speaking Monday, Eagles coach Chip Kelly refused to rule Darren Sproles (sprained MCL) out for Week 8.

Kelly believes Sproles could be sidelined only "a week or two." The Eagles are on bye in Week 7. Per Kelly, the team isn't planning to make a roster move at running back, an indication they truly believe Sproles' injury is minor. At the latest, Sproles' status will be updated early next week. Despite Kelly's optimism, Sproles is probably going to miss at least one game.

Darren Sproles has been diagnosed with a slight MCL tear in his left knee and is expected to miss at least one game.

Sproles' official timetable is 2-3 weeks. The Eagles are on a bye in Week 7, face the Cardinals in Week 8 and then the Texans in Week 9. At 5-1, the Eagles won't rush their valuable punt returner and change-of-pace back. Owners in need of wins can move on from Sproles and not lose much -- he was only averaging 5.5 touches per game on offense anyway over the last four weeks.

CSN Philly reports Darren Sproles (knee) "appears likely" to play Week 8 against the Cardinals.

After initially fearing a torn ACL, Sproles says he "felt pretty good" at Tuesday's practice. An MRI last week revealed no structural damage and just a mildly sprained MCL. Arizona is yielding the second-fewest PPR points to opposing running backs. At less than 100 percent and seeing just 5.5 touches per game over the past four, there will be better options than Sproles for your FLEX spot.

Darren Sproles (knee) was limited in Wednesday's practice.

As expected. Sproles is off on the right foot to play Week 8 against Cardinals. But at less than 100 percent against a good defense, he's merely an RB3.

Why did the Eagles phase sproles out of their gameplan?

Last night he had 1 carry for a TD, and two targets for one catch. Add to that a return TD. He's a pretty dynamic player and not getting the ball making him unstartable unless you are desperate. He's averaging 6.5 yards a carry and 12.2 yards a catch.

Ya after week 1 and 2 I was giddy...and since then his performance isn't down his opportunity is. I haven't seen any info about practice performance or any other factors that explain the usage.

Looks like I may have to start him this week, so hoping he didn't blow his wad last week.

 
Complete guess on my part but Sproles is just coming back from injury and the game was not in question. Add to that he is probably more in plays designed for passing situations and I don't think there was any need to get him the ball much this past week.

Sproles is coming off a knee injury. I'm sure the gameplan was to run the ball but the Carolina D put everyone in the box to stop the run so the Eagles passed it more. McCoy only got 12 carries.

That doesn't explain weeks 3-9.....

 
Thoughts on Sproles production today and usage against Green Bay?

Kind of in a bye week must start Sproles scenario.

Hoping for the production of last week, but would love to see more touches, as its a pipe dream to think he can do that on 1 carry and 2-3 targets again.

LeSean McCoy had his best performance of the season (21-130-1), but that didn't stop Sproles from vulturing a 4-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Sproles now has five rushing scores on the year, easily topping his previous career-high of three. The problem with using Sproles on a week-to-week basis is that he's touchdown dependent and isn't even really a goal-line back. He's averaging just 5.5 touches per game over the last four weeks.

Coach Chip Kelly insists Darren Sproles remains an "integral part" of the Eagles' offense despite Thursday's signings of DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews.

"Darren is a Swiss army knife," Kelly said. "You can use him in a million different ways." We'll take Kelly at his word on this one. Sproles essentially plays a different position than Murray and Mathews, and only touched the ball 97 times in 2014. There's no reason he can't remain a lightning change-of-pace back to the thunder Kelly wants to emphasize on early downs.

Sproles was among the most effective running backs in the league last season, averaging 5.77 yards per carry, 9.67 yards per reception and scoring six touchdowns. But he was given just 6.4 touches per game, making him a poor week-to-week fantasy option. No matter what Kelly says, it's hard to see that number rising now that the Eagles have made serious investments in DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews.

The Eagles have informed Darren Sproles that his role won't change in 2015.

32 years old now, Sproles started 2014 off like gangbusters in the first two weeks, but averaged just five touches per game in the second half of the season. Sproles is primarily a special teams player in Philly. His backfield usage could even dip further following the additions of DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews.

The Eagles have gotten Darren Sproles reps at receiver during spring practices.

Sproles didn't line up wide or in the slot much last season. But coach Chip Kelly said he wants to find more ways to get Sproles touches, and in a crowded backfield behind DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews, getting Sproles some looks out of the slot isn't a bad idea. Much like last season when Sproles averaged five touches per game, his weekly workloads will be of the lightly-used change-of-pace variety. He's a fantasy RB4/5.

Should Sproles only be drafted as a value play if Murray or Matthews go down? Or does he hold TD value like he did last year?

Just watched the GB/PHI highlights and he looked pretty dang good. Are there enough touches in that offense for Sproles to hold value, especially with how late you can draft him?

The Eagles want to get RB Darren Sproles more involved in the offense.

"We'd like to get him the ball steadily and consistently, and he certainly is a unique, outstanding player," Eagles OC Pat Shurmur said before the preseason. "We just need to make sure we get him the ball, and we have a plan to do that." That plan could involve Sproles lining up more as a receiver, something the Eagles worked on in camp. Sproles averaged just six offensive touches a game over the second half of 2014. Even if he sees a slight bump in usage, he is unlikely to be a consistent fantasy option in standard formats.
