Has anybody read or heard any recent news about how he's doing and what his role is expected to be by week 1? Is he going to be starting in training camp?

Last I heard was he will play inside next to Hayes and behind Lenon so it should be a short trip before he is every week starting. Of all the rooks at his poisiton, I like him to lead the way in FF points this year.

acouple things to think about here: if team comes out the gates with Lenon and wins games the coach may want to keep Washington on the bench and let him absorb/watch and learn. regardless when he does get the node he will be a force, I think he would benifit sitting the year behind lenon and learning and then 2011 he will be more comfortable

What about McClain?

Yeah, McClain is the no brainer this year, but unfortunately I'm not going to be able to draft him in my rookie draft. Looking at Weatherspoon and Washington late in the first round. I need a guy that will produce this year and beyond. Last year I had to settle on Curry and couldn't start him most of the year, and still might not be able to start him this year either. Was hoping Washington might be thrown into the fire week 1 with some nice numbers to go along with it......

I think he has a better shot that Weatherspoon to start this year. Spoon has to get by Peterson, who was left for dead by Jax, but showed he still has wheels in ATL. I know we fall in love with the new guy, but knocking Peterson from the starting role is a tough task. Long term, a 4-3 WLB like Spoon might have a better future, but Washington might be a better bet for this year. Peterson is a FA after this year, so the assumption is that Spoon has a clear shot in 2011. There's no guarantees Washington is going to be a tackle machine in the 3-4, it remains to be seen how they line him up, but he has much less competition. There is a chance Washington could be a starter right away in the AZ defense, but might not be a strong starter ever. Whereas if Spoon hits, and is a 3-down 4-3 WLB in ATL, he could be a top 30 LB.

Bump.

Did Washington start the preseason week 2 game the other night? Any chance he's going to be a safe play as a starter week 1?

Washington did not start. For now, he's not a safe play. I still think he starts sooner than later, but it may not be until some weeks into the season. Kurt Somers speculated after the game that Washington could start by opening weekend, but there's been no comment from the coaches (that I can find anyway) on the LB play since the game.

I don't understand why those coaches aren't giving Washington a shot. They are using mediocre talent ahead of him.

I thought he'd be a little further up the depth chart initially, too. They've got enough veteran talent throughout the defense to possibly ease his transition, but with Gerald Hayes out, they really need some kind of stabilizing presence in the middle. For now, that makes it hard to take Paris Lenon off the field and it appears they don't think Lenon can handle the SILB job.At some point, I think Washington's dynamic talent wins out. He'll have to be lights out to make that happen before Hayes' comes back, I think. If Hayes is out for an extended period, I think he could still work his way in by midseason and possibly sooner.

Thanks for the info Jene. So us Washington owners are sitting tight until he officially takes over Dansby's old job? The plan is for him and Hayes to man the middle? Hopefully his talent overtakes old man Lenon sooner than later.

I can't remember if the Cardinals specifically said WILB after the draft, but that's where he's slotted. If they felt he was a reasonable immediate fit at SILB, they'd have him there already (with Lenon at WILB) instead of Togafau. I've unfortunately been shut out of Washington in every single draft thus far, but had I drafted him as my LB4/LB5, I'd be sitting on him in redraft leagues as long as I could spare the roster space. Too much upside to cut then have to fight over later.

Per Rotoworld:Rookie ILB Daryl Washington will start the Cardinals' third preseason game in place of Pago Tagofau. The Cards are just now getting around to creating their depth chart. A highly impressive second-round pick, Washington appears to have passed Togafau and Monty Beisel as the favorite to start adjacent to Paris Lenon. Ideally, Lenon will go to the bench when Gerald Hayes (back surgery) returns. Here's his big opportunity....

I am assuming Washington started at the SILB position. With Lenon at WILB? Goes to figure with this that Wshington will stay at SILB when Hayes gets back? I s this right?

Just finished watching this a second time.Washington started, played WILB, but came out in subpackages on passing downs. That may be because the Cardinals used lots of dime with a third safety as they often do, but Lenon was the lone inside linebacker. If Washington plays well, and he was shedding Olin Kreutz relatively well during the first two series, he'll stick in the lineup when Hayes returns and almost assuredly move into the passing subpackages. If not, Lenon moves over and we wait for Washington to get more seasoning. I think the former scenario is much more likely.

So assuming he starts for the first few games, and stays in the Nickel...

LB2/LB3++ production for those early games?

Full Disclosure: Washington owner, no link or corroboration

I heard TCU head Coach Gary Patterson being interviewed by Randy Galloway (Galloway & CO.) in Dallas this afternoon. They were discussing recruiting/reloading after losing Washington & Hughes to the NFL. Patterson said they just heard that Washington was named a starting LB at AZ. Admittedly, I don't know the context of the start- he could mean in this week's preseason game for all I know. He could mean as a 2-down player. I don't know what he meant by that, but I do know for sure that he said it.

Just wanted to pass along the info. Do what you want with it.

Looking good tonight. 5 solos in the 1st quarter!

:lmao:

Based on the instincts he's shown I'd be surprised if he wasn't in on 3 downs Week 1. He gets it.

Looking really good on that open field tackle on WP & shooting the gap to trip him up. Really flying to the ball.My post above quoting Patterson was probably in reference to this game, but it sure looks like he could be starting in the regular season. One can hope- I sure could use him.

I have no doubt he'll be a starter Week 1. To me it's just a question of if he'll be on the field all 3 downs. Either way, he's cemented in my starting lineup for the forseeable future.

Here's the proof: per Rotoworld

Second-rounder Daryl Washington has been named the starter at inside linebacker next to Paris Lenon.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt is loath to start rookies, but Washington gave him no choice after clearly outplaying the competition in exhibition action. Considering his impressive speed and tackling ability, Washington should prove to be a fine successor to Karlos Dansby.

2 down or 3 down?

2 down or 3 down?
That's the main question right there.

The difference between LB3/4 and LB2. The difference between every week fantasy starter and bye week spot filler.
The Cardinals used a dime package on every subpackage snap I saw in the past two preseason games. Lenon was the lone linebacker in that package, with Adrian Wilson playing alongside him in the box. I'd expect the same during Week 1, and hope to be pleasantly surprised by seeing Washington in subpackages sooner than later.
