Dave Ragone (1 Viewer)

Dave Ragone, formerly of the Houston Texans, was waived.

Interesting enough, both the Bengals and the Colts put in a claim.

Cincy got him since they had a worse record.

The intriguing part was that this says (1) the Bengals want more competition / warm bodies to compete for the #2 job (and even more so if Palmer isn't ready), and (2) the Colts want a better backup than Jim Sorgi for Peyton.

Ragone a Bengal

Surprised more teams didn't but glad to see those 2 put a claim in. Too bad he'll backup two more QBs and not get much of a shot to start. Maybe he can beat out doug johnson, wright, or whomever might fill in if Carson can't go for the first few weeks of the season.

Ragone has been extremely accurate in NFLE or preseason when I've seen him play. I believe he was 18 for 21 in one of the NFLE games I saw last year which at any level of football is super accurate.

He was a 3rd round pick too IIRC not some late round project most people have made him out to be. I'm pretty sure he was "supposed to" go in the 2nd and when he fell to the 3rd the Texans drafted BPA.

The Colts put a claim on him because Jim Sorgi's shoulder is barking at him right now. They said all he needs is rest. They also have UDFA Josh Betts and UDFA David Koral (the backup to Drew Olson at UCLA) fighting for the #3 spot. Mike McGann from Temple is also in the mix. If Sorgi is hurt, that #3 becomes becomes a lot more important.

Kubiak must be REALLY happy with Sage Rosenfels to drop a QB that the team has been developing for a couple years behind Carr. In fact, Ragone was drafted the same year as Carr, IIRC.

I wonder if this reflects on the direction Kubiak wants to take the Texans passing game... maybe modeling it after the Denver/Plummer scheme? Lots of rollouts and play-action? Ragone at 6-4 245 might not fit the bill for that scheme.

Then again, does David Carr fit that scheme?

I've been holding Ragone as a developmenal type QB for a year or so in a couple deep dynasties. I think he has every chance to win the #2 spot behind Palmer (eventually). Anthony Wright, Erik Meyer ®, & Doug Johnson don't exactly impress me as a long-term backup to CP.

I actually like Ragone, but the move to replace him with Rosenfels (who I do like as an ISU alumni) made me wonder what the Texans didn't like about him.

When they released Ragone, Kubiak answered these questions. He released him early to give him his best shot on another team with a different system. He said Ragone is a good QB and in a different offense he could work out, but the new offense in Houston just isn't a fit for Ragone. Something along those lines. Another Ragone fan...

Another borderline Ragone fan here...also think that Carr at least has the mobility side of what's needed in Kubiak's (Shanny's) system.

Everyone who wants to get excited about Ragone, remember this was a guy how had three years to beat out Tony Banks as the back-up in Houston and could not get THAT job done. I know the previous coaching staff is not to be trusted too much its player evaluation, but the fact remains that Kubiak dropped this guy before they had real practices. IMO, he does not fit out system is a nice way of saying that he is not good. As for for being the NFLe MVP remember Rohan Davey won that the previous year and is barely in the league as the 4th string Qb for the Cardinals. Maybe Ragone does something, but I would not bet your moneyon it.

I thought it was the year after. Didn't Sage play for Kubiak in Denver years ago?

IIRC Brady never beat out Huard and then got a shot after Bledsoe got hurt. Alot of teams have young backups and vets and the #2 is truly decided the moment the #1 gets hurt. As you know, a vet could be used as a short term fillin that keeps the team on track. A youngster can be given the much needed experience.

BTW, your example reads, Brady DID beat Huard when it came down to. Conversely, last year in the final game with absolutely nothing on the line when Carr got hurt, Banks played, that would have been the perfect opportunity Ragone to play even as 3rd QB. The texans invested a first day pick on Ragone so that had plenty of reason to force him into the line-up at the fist opportunity available. Outside of fan and media speculation, no person connected with the Texans, officially or as an unknown "insider" ever hinted at Ragone being a serious threat to overtake Banks, much less challenge Carr. My understanding is that Ragone is a more a gamer than a practice player, and his act at practice inspires next no confidence that he gets it.

Hey, stranger things have happened than Ragone getting a change of scenery/better coaching and all of sudden displaying the characteristics of an NFL QB. From three years of following his saga closely as a Houston fan, I am in the camp that says I don't think he will.
