David Garrard waived by Jaguars, McCown to start Week One (1 Viewer)

Jay_Glazer Jay Glazer I'm reporting the Jaguars today have informed starting QB David Garrard they are releasing him! Luke McKown will start opener! Shocker!!!
Seriously? What is it with Del Rio? He did this with Leftwich a couple of years ago, but this is even closer to the first game. So weak.
Yeah, hard to think of another surprise QB cut so close to game 1. Any others in recent memory?
Leftwich?
Well, in addition, there was also Byron Leftwich.

what a cheap move by Jax. If I was a fan I would be really pissed. So, the consensus is downgrade all players from Jax? I am suddenly not feeling good about my MJD selection :X
On the contrary, local fans including myself are generally thrilled. If David is better than Luke it's not by enough to matter. Your Jag fantasy players are fine, no reason to panic. This was going to happen last season except that Luke blew out his knee. It's all good, here in Jax.

I doubt Seattle or San Francisco would put in a claim. $8m is a lot of money for a mediocre QB and they would be on the hook for all of it. I think what will probably happen is he'll resign with Jax on Sat. for a lot less money.
I though veterans were free agents when released.
If you have 4+ accrued seasons (like Garrard does), then you become a free agent immediately. Garrard can sign with any team.

The usual sentiment is to downgrade everyone in these situations. I think there will be an upside here...An increasingly awful Garrard already made the Jax WR corp a fantasy wasteland so you can only go up from there. Gabbert may be very raw but he will play sooner than later and will actually be an upgrade. I would say that Gabbert's arm probably adds some value to Jason Hill and might stretch that D enough that MJD's production will get an uptick in the 2nd half of the season (if his knee is actually usable by the end of the season of course).

Has to be more to the story.

Down here in Miami we are aiming for about 40,000 season ticket holders this year, and Jax might be worse. Gonna be a lot of empty seats in the stadium.
linkquote:

The Jaguars have a lease with EverBank Field until 2029. In order to break the lease, the team would have to prove three consecutive years of operating at a loss and then have a country judge approve the team to break the lease and leave.

That's great, but the biggest thing people are questioning here is the timing.Wouldn't you be even more thrilled if they had done this over a month ago so the new starting QB could have more time to prepare?

Any chance McCown is an upgrade?
Yes. The Jags were going to replace Garrard with McCown last season before Luke got hurt. There is certainly a chance this is an upgrade.
why wait until now?Garrard played well into the 3rd quarter in the Bills game.
I think you should pick up McCown, you got nothing to lose at this point.
lolthanks, but no waivers allowed until after week 1 in that particular league. I'm stuck but no reason to continue this hijack.

I actually think this is the correct move for that franchise moving forward, however, the timing is so bad.

Why waste any reps at all for your other QB's if you are going to let Garrard go?

This should have been done a while ago.

I guess maybe they were unsure how ready Gabbert would be, and if Luke was actually serviceable enough to start until they wanted to insert Gabbert.

Wow AFC south has seen some strang things this off season.

Houston jumps out to a huge early favorite to win that division.

Indy has set back with arguably the best QB to play and turn to a 38 year old guy who has been with the team for 10 days.

Jax release their starting QB 2 days prior to kick off.

Titans release Young, and have their star running back hold out for pretty much all of trainig camp.

The Texans have to be feeling the pressure more so than ever. Kubiak has to produce a playoff appearance this year otherwise he is toast.

I guess we will wait and see. I have seen your postings enough on this board to know that you know things Jaguar far better than me. But to an outsider, this move not only looks cheap but also looks like its weakening an already weak offense. I am hoping you are correct. MJD better be ready to :boxing:

Maybe they have delusions of winning the division and didn't want the QB desperate Colts to sign him during pre-season?...Or they're aholes and like dropping bombs like this on their vet QBs...

How has McCown looked this preseason? I actually liked what I saw from him early in his career, but haven't seen a thing lately.
McCown has looked very good (for teh last 2 preseasons). But he wasn't in there this year when it was 1's vs 1's.

I've always like Luke McCown. I think he will surprise some critics.
Perhaps you've got him confused with his brother Josh. Luke has only started 7 games in his career, none since 2004.
Nope, Not confused at all.
wikipedia disagrees with the idea that he hasn't started since 2004.
Tampa Bay BuccaneersDuring week 13 of the 2007 NFL season, McCown produced his finest performance as an NFL quarterback, throwing for 313 yards and 2 touchdowns during an emergency start for the injured Jeff Garcia in Tampa Bay's 27-23 victory over the New Orleans Saints.McCown started the next game against the Houston Texans and was 25-38 for 266 yards and no interceptions, but a loss. He came in relief in the second half of week 16 and threw for 185 yards and one interception. McCown started the last game as the Bucs had already clinched a playoff spot. He threw for 236 yards and one interception with 2 TDs. McCown played in 5 games, starting 3, during the 2007 season, and threw altogether for 1,009 yards, 3 interceptions, 5 touchdowns, with a 91.7 QB rating.

Serviceable in a pinch as a QB2 in a start 2QB league? Sounds like it perhaps.

Maybe I should shtick it up at the opener on Sunday and take a sign saying "Go, Cade, Go!" or "McNown >>> Jerrard".

"McNown >>> Jerrard"that one is pretty good

Garrard 2010

Y/A 12th in NFL at 7.5

Comp % 8th in NFL at 64.5%

TD % 3rd in the NFL at 6.3%

Those, my FBG brethren, are elite numbers

based on those three stats alone, here's the top 10 QBs of 2010

Brady, Tom QB NE

Rivers, Philip QB SD

Rodgers, Aaron QB GB

Romo, Tony QB DAL

Garrard, David QB JAC

Vick, Michael QB PHI

Young, Vince QB PHI

Brees, Drew QB NO

Kitna, Jon QB DAL

Manning, Eli QB NYG

If he could limit his picks, he'd be elite...

Had Lienart already lost the job when he was cut last year? Even so, that was pretty surprising to go from the heir to Warner at the beginning of preseason to outright cut at the end of it.

I kinda wonder who was the driving force behind this decision. Del Rio has to know that he has to produce a winning season this year in order to keep his job. However it's hard to bank on a rookie QB delivering that so going with Gabbert out of the gate wouldn't have been much of an option unless he looked VERY ready in preseason. Could Del Rio really believe that McCown offers him the best opportunity to win this year? That seems like a stretch although I'm not a Jags homer. If the GM Gene Smith is pulling the strings on this deal you have to wonder what the relationship is between him and Del Rio. It's hard to fathom a coach who has to know he's on his last leg buying into this change in direction. If I'm Del Rio and taking a gamble on someone not named Garrard I'd at least do it with the rookie. Maybe you get lucky, finish around .500, beat some teams you shouldn't in the second half and show enough progress that ownership has reason for optimism and gives you a 1 year extension. Even if McCown plays better than expected the future is still in Gabbert's hands. Doesn't seem a step in the right direction to hand the reins to McCown.

@taniaganguli

David Garrard was introduced to the Chamber of Commerce as the #Jaguars starting QB. back to the stadium around 2, told he'll be cut by 3

Yes. But better late than never. I've been calling for them to cut David and start Luke since the draft. The way it was handled was total bush league and the franchise should be embarrassed. But fantasy wise at least I don't see it as a major issue for anyone besides Garrard and McCown obviously.

I am not shocked here. The only thing that I find odd with this release is that it didn't occur on the cut down to 53. I expected it to happen then. I guess maybe that's why they took so long to announce their cuts the other day. There's a chance that they were trying to deal him. His salary is pretty high though and was probably a deal killer.

As a Jaguars fan, I am not upset with this, at all. They are not going to be very good this year, with or without David Garrard, so they moved on with their rebuilding process. McCown will start for a while and Blaine Gabbert will eventually start sometime later in the year. There really is no point in keeping Garrard and his salary around. Having a rookie start for a portion of the year will probably buy Jack Del Rio another year.

Oh, and Del Rio doesn't make personnel decisions. Although I sure he has some input, this is the work of Gene Smith.

what are the best destinations for Garrard if he wants a good chance to start in 2011?
SF - Smith is no longer the QB of the future and all it'll take is one ill-timed interception against the Seahawks costing Harbaugh a win against his rival Pete Carroll for someone to supplant him. And since this is Alex Smith we're talking about, it'll happen.Seattle - No brainer.Indianapolis - Depends on Peyton's diagnosis.

About time. They stuck with mediocrity long enough. When your QB is a clown like this guy, you have no shot at a superbowl.

Canada? :hophead: What David is good at is a controlled low risk passing game. So someone running a west coast system with a strong run game so he is not expected to throw deep often. I can't think of a great landing spot. We played this game on the Jags message board last week and Seattle seemed to the consensus answer.

That was dumb. Regardless of your feelings about Leinart's ability, he couldn't have been worse than Derek Anderson and Max Hall and John Skelton...

Oh boy. Now, THAT is a salary dump.

If they don't sign him, that locker room is going to be conpletely lost.
I expect the opposite.
How come? MJD seemed incensed that they spent an early pick on Gabbert because of his support for David. He must be outraged about this.
Well, considering the starting Qb didn't get selected captain by his teammates, MJD must be in a minority.
Pay attention to the above post because it is telling. The 10 year vet QB was not voted a captain by the team. David is not who some of you think he is.
