If Colbert takes the job, does he bring the "persona" with him, or does he come up with new schtick?
No chance.
I wouldn't think so. But that's who he is to many people. I mean, what is CBS buying if they don't get the persona too? What are his comedic chops if he has to leave everything from the Colbert Report behind? It'd be like hiring Gallagher and saying "but no watermelons" or hiring Larry and telling him to leave the Cable Guy thing out.

Jim Carrey is Ace Ventura to a lot of people but he wasn't talking out of his ### in the Truman Show. If he got the gig I'm sure Colbert will bring elements of what he is on the old show to the new show but can't see him doing the exact same shtick unless the new show is exactly the same as the old one which seems like an impossibility. He's not going to suddenly turn into Tom Schneider and desert his current fan base.

Nipsey - how old are you? We aren't talking about the intrusive yet luvable scamp apartment handyman that had the hots for Miz Romano are we?

I tried to bet on Seinfeld. Sportsbook said my max bet is wagering .25 on it but the minimum wager is a $1. So I can't bet on him at all. Neat website.

Did I read this thread correctly? Rudnicki doesn't like Ferguson?
Looks like it. I don't think I'm on an island there.I liked him on the Drew Carey show just fine. Don't care much for his show.
I think he should stay at his time slot, because he's great there. He's better than Conan at it. Leno sucks. I saw him do a stand up for corporate dinner, and Bob Newhart's schtick is funnier at his age. I never watch Kimmel or Fallon. I think Fallon is talented, but I'm over late night television. I hardly watch TV anyway, but Ferguson is $$.

look at the old Daily Show vids of him, if you get a chance. his character there as Colbert are different than the version he runs with on his show. Beyond that, he was an improv actor with Second City here in Chicago. He did some other sketch comedy after that for Comedy Central.

I'm fully aware he is a comedian. I'm just thinking CBS would be concerned that, by not bringing the persona along, they risk alienating the fans he has, while also risking that whatever his new shtick is won't work with middle America. To me, he's not the lead-pipe-lock top option.

I agree that he's not a cinch to transit well. I understand the network wanting him though. Kind of, for me, it comes down to be gone able to really interview guests. He doesn't so it nearly well enough on his own show. I still think Stewart is so obvious the best choice but I know he's not leaving. I bet if Save asked him though...

Yea, I don't see Colbert working at all - it would be jarring to see him doing something/someone else.

Man freaking Simmons is dialed in. He said in his column the other day that Colbert is definitely getting that job.

Not to take anything away from Simmons but I saw stuff on Twitter the day Dave announced his retirement saying Colbert was CBS' top choice. I haven't read this whole thread but I'm guessing that was in here somewhere too.

Alienated? Are Colbert fans that invested in his persona?

Damn, that was quick. Gotta suck for Ferguson.
He gets the CBS buy out for his contract option. To my knowledge, he's also has never publicly lusted over the 11:30 timeslot like Letterman and O'Brien did before him. Ferguson is a talented guy who isn't necessarily limited to the talk show format. He'll land on his feet somewhere.

Yet another flaming liberal who thinks his snarky brand of not-so-clever humor is more funny than it really is.

Network television is utterly vapid.

Its all over Variety and Hollywood Reporter. They both reported that Colbert was their main guy they were going after the day Letterman announced.

guess not... wow. Very surprising to me.

It'll be fascinating to see how Colbert changes his on-screen persona. Television personalities are always some combination of a real person and the character they inhabit but few have tipped the balance as far as Colbert.

I don't see him really changing his persona. Viacom seems to like it, and I doubt they want him to stray too far.

Entertainment Weekly had a similar thought: "Colbert is expected to shed his ultra-conservative Colbert Report character for Late Show, which leads to perhaps the biggest question mark surrounding his hiring. Though he’s been going through the broad motions of being a late-night host since 2005, he hasn’t been “himself” on the air — so what does that look and feel like, exactly?"

So, John Oliver a slam dunk to replace Colbert? His run last summer on the Daily Show was really, really good.

Not a fan of this move, especially if he ditches his persona. The Report was some of the best written comedy stuff on TV currently.
I have to think this becomes a Hybrid "Colbert Report/Real Time" type show. Gotta ditch the format. I can't watch 3 Colbert interviews back to back to back.
