David Letterman retiring (will be replaced by Colbert) (1 Viewer)

"Humorless ####s" are the only guys who don't like Ferguson? He's that funny?

I leave the channel on after Letterman all the time and don't see the genius I guess. Seems like he's 100% shtick. I don't find him to be funny or a good interviewer.
He's a great interviewer, his guests love him. He gets them to talk more about themselves than any other host, all the promotion stuff is secondary.
Tough to argue humor.I don't get him I guess.
You and RN both have very good senses of humor, I'm surprised you don't like him. Then again I've never liked Conan, and many think he's funny. I guess maybe his delivery is not preferred, but I did like his older skits. Leno skits were terrible, I guess I'm all about the skits.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I like both Ferguson and Conan. If I had to pick between though, I prefer Conan.

Doubt there will ever be a better, more versatile, house band than the World's Most Dangerous Band.
I watched Late Night With David Letterman on NBC almost every night. The nights I missed, I recorded on my VCR and watched the next day. I was a big fan of the World's Most Dangerous Band.

But there is a better and more versatile house band on television right now: The Roots.

With all your gold records I guess you'd know

Love the Roots. And they obviously are versatile. My money's still on Sid, Will, Anton, and Paul.

What about the king of all media himself, Howard Stern? You know he'll be talking about this all day on his next show.

He actually won a Peabody award for his interview with Desmond TuTu a while back.

I'm with you DD on not really ever liking Conan on the late night circuit. I think it has more to do as he is a sketch comic relying on a script, while Ferguson and Leno are stand up improv guys who are used to being able to think quick on their feet.

No kidding? I like his monologue, the stuff with the audience, Geoff, the horse, the Frisbees...all of it. But he gets good guests, a lot of them being hot chicks, and the banter is way better than the other shows IMO sans The Daily Show.

Liked Letterman, but he was getting tired in more ways than one. It is time.
Yup. Still the best interviewer in the business, but the show has sucked for some time. I quit watching a few years ago.

I don't get the Craig Ferguson love, either.

Letterman is still on the air??? If you watch these late night shows you are seriously bored. NONE of them are remotely funny.

Not to bring up bad memories, but I don't think anyone came back right after 9/11 with a better monologue that really helped the people of NYC, and America at large. I probably rewatch that intro about once a year or so, I'm not sure many people at that time could have come out and said what he did, how he did, nearly as well. Of course that was 15 years ago now.... I'll miss him, but he was getting a bit long in the tooth.

dave, wait!

kidding aside, he could have retired at anytime in the last 5-10 years. i don't think he's been mailing it in but it's time. he's a throwback to a different kind of era in television history. i always appreciated the respect that he and carson had for one another.

among those likely successors, i would love to see Jon Stewart. he has the interviewing skills as well as the comedic skills. he doesn't rely on "bits" per se, like Conan or Fallon, to be funny. i don't know that he wants to seque from behind one desk to another, especially when he's really the tent pole for the CC in many ways. he's interested in doing other things, obviously, but his ability to interview guests of every stripe would be a real asset.

i want to say that Letterman's best years were clearly with NBC. it was as exciting a bit of subversive network programming as you could find. it was random, funny and helped define a comic sensibility that was unknown up that point. every night was kind of a thrill even when nothing happened.

I think the perception of Stewart is too tied to his political affiliation for a spot that has a large built-in audience of people who would be bothered by that.

I can't imagine Stewart doing a late night show like that. Plus, his shtick probably wouldn't be funny to a lot of people, and him getting away from it to do more traditional "network-friendly" humor would take away from who he is, IMO. Besides, The Daily Show is too awesome to mess with.

he's been doing a fake news show for, what, 15 years? he's really a skilled and engaging interviewer. personally, i don't think the network cares about the perception of his political leanings. they stood by dave over a couple of scandals.

here's the thing and it has been mentioned elsewhere: there is no format to rest on. CBS and his successor can do whatever format they like. the traditional models are ripe for tweaking - look at conan defecting to TBS, fallon simply moving his show up an hour - and someone like stewart could build easily handle that. personally, i don't think Jon will do it despite the temptation because he's not planned his exit yet from TDS and CC. he's not going to take the job and abandon CC because he's nostalgic.

The Jon Stewart show was a late night talk show and was one of the best of all time, IMO. But, it was on MTV when MTV didn't completely suck.

Stewart's been offered the network chair before and refused to sit down. He's well paid, gets Fridays off, and can leave for three or four months to shoot a movie and Comedy Central doesn't care. No network can match that freedom.

Bad feed, but here's a link

Craig Ferguson is awful. Just really really terrible. Can't believe he's still on or that people actually like him.

Conan should get back on Network TV.
I tried watching Conan on multiple timeslots and networks. Not funny. He runs jokes into the ground and you can see comedian guests thinking "oh please just stop, can we please move on?"

considering you're about the only person in here who doesn't like Letterman, I'm not sure what to tell you. Late Night talk shows might just not be your thing. Who do you like?

Stewart's talk show started on MTV but the next year it was picked up by Paramount and syndicated nationally. It did not last very long, though.

I thought that was the case but wasn't sure. Man, it was awesome.

Letterman has had a greater impact on conversation than any person in modern history. Bait-and-switch sarcasm was functionally absent from the average American mouth until he came along. Deconstruction is complete, the chat form as an arbiter of outlook likely dies with him. Thx, Dave.

But he actually had a late night show before, and it was funny. And I don't remember it being political.

I doubt anyone would argue. I'd go as far as saying that Letterman's NBC was the best talk show ever.
i don't know. those very early CBS years were pretty damn good. it was a departure from the wackiness of the NBC gig in favor of him being carson-esque. he might have lost the battle of succession with johnny's departure, but it certainly felt like he won war with the new show. he basked in the public adoration for a time.
