1-4 WIlson owner in my league finally gave up. Dumped him and picked up Jacobs and started him. He's off to a nice start.

David Wilson told reporters Friday doctors fear he suffers from spinal stenosis, and may miss the season's remainder.
He's got bigger problems than the rest of this year, if the initial diagnosis is true. Wilson will get a second opinion on his neck/spine Monday. Spinal stenosis has been known to shorten NFL careers, like that of former Redskins LT Chris Samuels. The 32nd overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, Wilson has rushed 115 times for 504 yards (4.4 YPC) and five touchdowns through two NFL seasons. He led the NFL in kickoff return yardage as a rookie last year.

This is the diagnosis that ended Cooper Manning's career. I'd imagine it depends on the severity, but the way I understood it -- this isn't a football injury, this is a condition.

From what I understand yeah, it's a condition in your spine. He's likely had it for a long time and it was simply aggravated with this injury and discovered during his x-ray's and MRI's. Jene Bramel tweeted out that it really depends on the degree of narrowing in his spine. I suppose this is a condition where if it's only a mild narrowing it's something he'd be safe to play through. But if it's severe enough he'd be at risk of paralyzing himself.

So, he already received the initial diagnosis of spinal stenosis. The fact that Wilson has any optimism of playing again this season, as evidenced by him saying, "”best-case scenario I’ll be back on the field (next Monday) to play the Minnesota Vikings", tells me that the initial diagnosis wasn't entirely certain that it should be season ending.
Julio's initial diagnosis was that the injury was season ending, but he didn't come out with optimism that he was going to play the next week. Plus, from the little I've read into this condition it seems like the varying degrees of severity can have a great effect on the diagnosis and is something that could vary the outlook more from doctor-to-doctor. A broken screw/foot is pretty cut and dry if that makes sense.
I'm pretty convinced he's going to be out for the rest of the season, but the analysis above just points out there are some signs there is some uncertainty involved for those holding out hope.

He also posted an article he wrote about Jarvis Jones, who has been diagnosed with the condition, that sheds some light on the complicated issue of determining whether a player is fit to continue playing even with it:

I like that Wilson's remaining optimistic. Although, even if the second opinion is good news. I'm kind of hoping (as a Giants fan and dynasty owner in several leagues) that they IR him for the season. Allow him to take any surgeries that may help the situation and allow more time for opinions to be formed by other doctors.

I may be wrong, but from what I've been able to gather, the location the condition is affecting determines whether it is operable or not. So, there's a possibility it's not something that could be repaired through surgery depending on the region it affects, in which it seems like it would be up to him and the doctors to determine whether he should risk playing "through" it.

I think the Wilson lovers and haters can agree that we hope this injury isn't career threatening. We all want to be able to say I told you so, but not at the expense of someone getting this severely injured.

As I follow this, I have a personal attachment to this situation as I sit here 30 days post-op from a neck surgery to alleviate stenosis in my own neck.
However, my neck stenosis was a little different in that it was forminal stenosis (narrowing of the nerve holes exiting the SIDES of each vertebrae) as opposed to David Wilson's spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal cord column in the BACK of a person's neck). The surgery that I had was a 3 level ACDF (Anterior Cervical Discectomy Fusion) of the 4th, 5th, and 6th cervical discs where they went in thru the front of my neck and removed 3 discs and inserted plastic spacers where the discs used to be and immobilized it with titanium bracket/screws. From what I've heard and read, Peyton Manning actually had a 1 level ACDF surgery the year that he sat out, but it was never reported or published as a "fusion".....it was always reported that he had 3 or 4 neck surgeries.
In David Wilson's case, I have to say that Spinal Stenosis is much more dangerous b/c it involves the spinal cord and the risk of possible paralysis. In his case, I think it is his VERTEBRAE......not a slipped or ruptured DISC that could cause impingement on the spinal cord. So I don't know the surgical procedure that they are talking about performing. (does anybody know the actual procedure that has been presented to him?)
Also, I do believe that Spinal Stenosis is what ended Mike Alstott's career.

I don't think anyone has specifically said what the problem is ... It sounds like there are many different causes (Inherited, Trauma, Degenerative) so it's almost impossible to even speculate.
Wow! Very interesting post ... How are you doing following the surgery?
