NFL.com's Gil Brandt believes South Carolina junior DE Jadeveon Clowney is "a good player, could be a great one if he works at it, but the jury is still out on that."
"I think he bought into the hype," Brandt writes. "He even admitted openly that he hung out this past summer, taking trips with friends instead of continuing to work out. And his poor conditioning showed early in the season." Brandt adds that he would take UCLA senior outside linebacker Anthony Barr over Clowney calling him a "more versatile, certainly more consistent player."

I've watched every snap of Carolina games this year and I will say that Clowney bought into the hype the media gave him this summer. However, he has had a profound effect on the majority of plays when he is on the field. Double teamed on passing plays and only sees a single blocker on running plays to the other side, which is the vast majority of runs. When they run at him he clogs the lane regardless of who is blocking him. The Heisman talk was totally unfair to him as a defensive lineman has little control over personal stats when so many other factors have to contribute to his success stat-wise. A QB or RB has the ball and has better control over personal stats.

Does he take plays off? Yes, sometimes he doesn't persue the back side when the run is wide and away from him. But he has ran down runners and made tackles on the opposite side of the field. He is a ferocious pass rusher and any reporter or sports blogger, who thinks he is overrated, should interview the offensive tackles assigned to block him. He always pushes the tackle into the backfield, but when the run is the other way it is hard to pad tackling stats in the books.

When teams see his freakish abilities in the combine they will not worry so much about his lack of sacks this season. Clowney works hard when he is in the game and he certainly has an impact on opposing offenses.

Will he be a great pro? I think so but time will tell. IMO the big question with Clowney is what happens when he has some success and gets a big payday. His raw abilities shouldn't be in question. His work ethic over the long haul is what I would be worrying about.

I hope he falls outside of the top 10 - Guy is just a ####!!! He either sucks, or just doesn't want to play. However you cut it, he doesn't look like a dominating player right now. Maybe he is too busy already counting his cash, but if this is his personality, he better plan on living the rest of his life off that rookie contract, because he will be chewed up and spit out in the rough business known as the NFL!

"My practice habits have picked up way more than they did last year," he said. "Last year, I really didn't practice real hard. This year, I came in with a different mind-set, like I want to be that guy, I want to have no flaws in my game." Many have questioned Clowney's work ethic this season, and we believe some unfair assumptions have been made. He has dealt with injuries and illnesses, but Clowney has been on the field for a larger number of snaps the last few weeks.

He needs to stop talking... All he does is hurt his stock.

A lot of people who have come out of college with tons of talent that didn't succeed - as talented as he is, I wouldn't be shocked if he was a bust.

Five NFL executives polled by NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah believe South Carolina junior DE Jadeveon Clowney's dip in production is only a minor concern.

"Minor concern," one executive said. "His tape is good. Ignore the dip in production. He impacts the game in a drastic way. My only concern is his makeup. We'll get more answers in that area after we meet with him and do all of our background work." As we have been saying, Clowney's statistical production has dipped for a number of reasons, but in the grand scheme of things it does not matter. Disruption is production, even if it does not show up on a box score.

NFL.com's Bucky Brooks disclosed he is concerned at what South Carolina junior DE Jadeveon Clowney will be as a pro.

"Two sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss for a guy who is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick? To me that is not enough," Brooks said during a radio interview. "Before I can stamp him as a guy that his going to revolutionize and change the position, he is going to have to show me more." We still contend that Clowney is playing at a high level outside of the Missouri game. Stats are fine, but disruption is production.

Florida OC Brent Pease told reporters the team's conservative game plan against South Carolina was more about junior DE Jadeveon Clowney than it was starting freshman QB Skyler Mornhinweg.

Mornhinweg was making the first start of his career, so it is telling that Pease focused more on Clowney than easing his new quarterback into the game. We believe other teams have done the same with Clowney, and it is just another reason why he is impacting games outside of the box score.

South Carolina junior DE Jadeveon Clowney (foot) will play Saturday against Coastal Carolina.
Clowney will play through bone spurs in his foot that will require surgery in the offseason. "His foot is bothering him. We practiced him yesterday and I (let) him off again today because it got real sore on him," said Gamecocks defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward. "It's going to bother him the rest of the season. I have to do a good job of resting him. We are going into the 11th game of the season, if he doesn't know what we're doing now, he never will." Clowney didn't practice on Thursday.

South Carolina junior DE Jadeveon Clowney was held out of Saturday's game against Coastal Carolina by defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward.
Beat writers were told after the game that Clowney could have played, but Ward told the defensive end to sit if he had any discomfort with the foot injury that will require surgery after the season. Defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles and running back Mike Davis also missed the game. South Carolina easily won 70-10.

Agree on both counts - Kid has been the "best defensive end prospect" since his high school days, def has gotten to his head... Red flags all over the place this season too - Big gap between the NFL & SEC, think he is in for a rude awakening.

 
Look, the one thing we can all agree on is motivation... The best way to motivate a young man who doesn't come from much, who appears unmotivated is to hand this young man a huge pile of money.

Not sure where that is coming from. The coaches and players would love to have another year out of him.

Offensives plan their entire game around him. Not uncommon to see a tight-end and fullback helping to block on his side.

He was hyped up way too much by ESPN after the hit, but he will be a solid player. Reminds me a lot of Aldon Smith coming out, he is an excellent pass rusher but needs work to be more consistent against the run. He really has not had any character issues at school that would suggest problems like Smith has had.

Most of the criticism has been around him not playing through injuries. Considering all of the conversations about whether or not he should even play this year and what happened with teammate Marcus, I think that is overblown.

If money is on the top of his mind, good. It should be. USC and ESPN have made plenty of money off of him. No issues with him doing what he can to ensure he gets his.

Usually when you get the thing that is motivating you, in this case it woukd be money, that would NOT motivate you more.......

The reports out of SC this year have raised a lot of questions about motivation...

To answer your question; natural talent/size - However this only goes so far in the NFL.

JMO - Maybe he turns into the next Bruce Smith, I just don't see it.

The MMQB's Greg Bedard spoke with multiple NFL executives who said the heart of South Carolina junior DE Jadeveon Clowney's evaluation could be focused on effort, consistency and passion for the game.

"Does [Clowney] have all the talent in the world? Yeah," one AFC GM said. "For people to get secure with him, it’s going to come in the interviews, the one-on-ones with teams... they’re going to see what’s in his soul. They’re going to see what makes him tick." Another executive added he thinks some of the criticism "can be overblown." It is noteworthy that Bedard called Clowney "extremely stiff (in) the hips, a straight-line player." We don't necessarily agree with this, but Bedard and NFL executives did bring up Michael Strahan among other names.

I was thinking the same thing. I still like him in NYG if he falls as some in this thread think. I really want him to go to a team that has top DE experience where his proper development won't be a discussion. Put it all on him and let's see how it plays out.

Jadeveon Clowney received his second ticket this month for speeding, this time going 84 miles per hour in a 55-mph zone.
Clowney was pulled over around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday and will have to pay a $445 ticket. "Police inspector Jim Crawford said the officer involved said Clowney was courteous and didn’t complain. Crawford said the officer thought Clowney’s name was familiar but did not know who he was," The State writes.
