DE Myles Garrett, CLE (1 Viewer)

Trade officially requested.
Interesting. They SHOULD have zero trouble getting 2 late 1sts for him. This being the Browns, they'll likely give him away, or refuse to trade him and risk him sitting.

Lions should be all over trying to get him opposite Hutch. Commanders would make a lot of sense too, as Dan Quinn's defense could really use that Micah Parsons level player.
These are the exact 2 I thought of. 49ers have the 11th pick and are desperately trying to stay in Win mode.

There is also a chance he stays in Cleveland. A trade request has meant very little in some cases recently.

Very rare to get a trade request this early though. Like usually when its someone who ends up staying or getting a new deal (like Aiyuk for instance) its after the draft.

This leadership team has seemed to be reliable when it comes to their we want volunteers not hostages approach, but that's also not been with the type of talent of Myles. That said, he has no guaranteed money left and if he won't sign a new contract, he can make this very messy. It's cost prohibitive to trade him before June 1 though.

Yes, this is a trade request timed to give whoever the buying team is the maximum amount of opportunity to secure a deal for him. Leaves all the current draft picks on the table and a few months to plan a potential move after they've finalized their rookie assessments.

I don't want to see Myles go but I understand his position and don't blame him. Hope he does well in the NFC.

I think this calls into question Andrew Berry's job stability going into the draft. If I'm Haslam, given the pile of picks they could get, do you want Berry in charge of that? I don't think so but the Browns being the Browns, MAC is probably correct and they won't entertain any trade offers and it will end as ugly as possible.

He apparently went public today because he already had let the Browns know he wanted out and I don't think he liked hearing Andrew Berry telling people at the Senior Bowl he'd not take two firsts for him. He's trying to force the issue.

I'll be surprised if he's not traded, shocked more like it unless they try and placate him by throwing more money at him. He has an $18.9m option bonus which kicks on the 5th day of the league year so I'd guess this goes down before then with the new league year, which would be March 17th and my guess is this gets down before that time. If it's not it would just increase the Browns asking price because the acquiring team would only owe him a tad above $1m.

IMO Myles is doing them a favor making this request. By the time they turn this around he'll be past his prime and/or past his contract, this is best for everyone involved.

His contract, even with that option bonus, is pretty good for any team acquiring him. The new team would probably want to extend him but it won't replace what the two remaining years on his deal, so if he's dealt before his option bonus kicks in his new team would owe him roughly $45m for two seasons. Between that, and being a better player then Kahlil Mack was when the Raiders traded him, he should have a bigger market value despite being two years older then Mack was. Only negative for the Browns is all I've hearing all week is how loaded this draft class is for DL, inside and out, and so a lot of teams would likely prefer the cheaper and younger option. Of course, none of them are Myles Garrett.

So I think he's gone, will end up a contending team with a late pick which will give up their 2025 and 2026 first round picks plus a little more for him.

Yes. A trade request with that farewell message indicates he’s played his last down in Cleveland.

This isn’t to leverage a new deal the way Lamar or Aiyuk did.

I'd say that nothing is for sure.
Would it seriously shock anyone if they signed him to a new deal next week??

That would shock me. What would not shock me is if we're still talking about this in August.

This doesn’t strike me as a money situation. I guess they could potentially throw a Watson level deal at him and make him say no.

Dragging it out and not maximizing his value would be so very Browns.

Remainder of Myles Garrett's contract...

2025: $1.3m base salary + $5m roster bonus
2026: $1.3m base salary + $5m roster bonus

Salary-cap hits of $6.3m for an acquiring team. And Garrett might not demand a new deal until after 2025, since his main goal is winning a title

yeah, but he is doing the right thing. hes giving his team time to get this done. he is not making this request as the season is starting and catching people by surprise. if this doesnt work out its on the Browns shoulders. Not his.

I suspected this day would come eventually. given Desean's contract, the team will struggle to stay competitive for a while. its tough when you have that kind of money trapped in one player who isnt even playing for you. The writing is on the wall here. but if he does get two firsts, thats a nice start on a rebuild.

He's not accounting for some option bonuses which are sizeable.

The Browns and Garrett restructured his contract on August 20, 2023. As part of the restructure Garrett converted $16.17 million of his 2023 salary to a signing bonus creating $12.936 million in cap room. The Browns also converted all of Garrett's future salaries into prorated bonuses and added five voidable years to the contract for salary cap purposes.

Per OTC:

2024 cap number - $19,722,120
2025 cap number - $20,374,009

Yeah I saw that after I posted that tweet.

I've never heard of an NFL star player requesting a trade and not getting what they wanted.

Lamar Jackson requests trade from Ravens, says Ravens ‘not interested in meeting my value’

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Lamar Jackson officially wants out of Baltimore.

The best dual-threat quarterback in the sport tweeted early Monday that, “As of March 2nd I requested a trade from the Ravens organization for which the Ravens has not been interested in meeting my value.”

In a thread where he thanked the fans for the love and support they consistently showed me, he said that he appreciated and loved the fans of Baltimore, but had to make a business decision that was best for he and his family.

I think we have to consider QBs their own separate category.

I actually hope he gets traded, but people are in denial or just out of touch with modern sports if you think it's a guarantee Myles is done in Cleveland

Not saying its a guarantee, but I don't see it as similar to Lamar at all. Lamar was a QB just entering his prime on a contender. None of those things apply to Garrett, even if he's, in my opinion, the best defensive player in the NFL.

A betting site I just looked at has him staying in Cleveland as the slight favorite over any over of the individual destinations.

Myles is under contract for the next two years. The Browns have done EVERYTHING right in extending him BEFORE he got close to becoming a free agent.
The Ravens didn't bother to extend the league MVP, they traded away his best WRs and made him PROVE IT with yet another league MVP award and then they didn't extend his contract until he demanded a trade and said his goodbye. He had zero years left on his contract.
QBs are their own separate category, they get paid more, have more impact on every play and have more impact on wins/losses. They are the most important and valuable and hold more leverage and that is why Lamar's demand to get traded was granted and he won another MVP with the Arizona Cardinals instead of the Ravens who caved to his demands.
Or DEs are less valuable than star QBs especially when they are under contract and the team they are playing with would get hit with a significant cap hit if they got traded. The last thing the Cleveland Browns can afford is another huge cap hit over the next two years. Myles is under contract, doesn't hold the leverage, the team can't afford the cap hit, the team would get LESS than they would if a team signed him away as a free agent which he WILL BE in two years. He isn't going anywhere.

Trey Hendrickson and Tee Higgins both requested a trade out of Cincy this past offseason and got just a flat "NO". Trey led the league in sacks so probably a star even if not a household name. Higgins played fine when he played.

Of course, 95% of the time players are looking out for themselves (and they should be) and are just looking for the most money to maximize thrir earnings. Demanding a trade is just one tool in the toolkit of negotiating, Cleveland may step up and pay him big again or they may trade him and another team does it.

The issue with Lamar Jackson was a contract signed by another QB by some stupid organization that guaranteed all the salary that's why the Ravens pumped the brakes.

He's been amazing for them for a long time. It's a testament to his dedication to excellence--the ability to play and produce at the highest level for a team that seemingly never has any hope. He's been to the Playoffs twice. They mortgaged the future for Watson, and now the Browns need a total rebuild.

I hope they do the right thing for him.

To be fair, Garrett deserves some blame for Watson. He went to bat for Watson, he also was very vocal about criticizing Baker Mayfield.

Garrett is an awesome player, who is likely a future HOFer, but I also don't feel they need to "do right" by him.

Greatest brown in the last 20 years - Joe Thomas or Myles Garrett? Both deserve better based on their performance. Joe seemed like a better dude.

While I think there's some PR points to be gained, a teams priority should be about what's best for them.
Getting multiple firsts and cap relief seems like a good idea imo.

I wonder if any team could take on Garrett and Watson at their contract. Dumping both together would be HUGE

If Watson were included, I doubt any compensation would be. Watson is probably worth negative 1st round picks.

Probably yeah, though I guess I meant more like take a very good/best offer as opposed to trading him where he wants to go for a lesser deal.

he also was very vocal about criticizing Baker Mayfield.
Way more to it than just this, but I think we have enough info to suggest both played a role in that locker room breaking, resulting in the sequence of events that's led us to today. Always lessons to be learned from prior events, but not sure it makes a difference to unpack this history now. What's done is done, and that is that.

Garrett was probably the loudest voice (other than maybe Beckham, who had nowhere near the cache Garrett had) in essentially running Mayfield out of town. Garrett also said he believed Watson and thought he was a "good guy" which could also be called toeing the company line. But its also possible if Garrett had fully supported Baker, instead of being against him, the Browns don't make arguably the worst trade in history, which has only been compounded by Mayfield looking infinitely better than anyone the Browns have trotted out since he left.

Now I'm not saying they dumped Baker, and traded for Watson because of Garrett, that's not what I'm saying, but Garrett (the team MVP) joining in on crapping on Baker, was a catalyst for the process to start. So, I don't feel like we should feel bad for Garrett for having to suffer for being on the Browns, he very much made his own bed there.

He's the best defensive player in the NFL in my eyes, though maybe more like top-5 going forward given his age. I do wonder if the Browns will have a hard time passing up an offer of 2 1sts round picks, because I think that offer will be out there.
