Deadbeat Owners (1 Viewer)

This year in one of the leagues that I commish in, we have had a few problems with owners just not paying attention. At first it was 2 owners so I sent an email to the league reminding owners that starting players on bye is not acceptable as it throws of the dynamics of the league. One owner keeps doing it though and I am not sure what the best action is. This league is just a friendly league where most of us play in other leagues together that are definetly more serious and we wanted to play around with a different format. The entry fee is only $10 so we are not talking any big money here.

Would it be fair for me as a commish to ensure that he has a valid roster by setting his roster for him? I wouldn't necessarily do waiver picks ups for him, but just do my best to give him a valid roster with what he has.

Or would a better option be to get him a co-owner that helps him manage his team.

What have others done in the past? I am looking for a solution to just get me through this season as he is gone next year.

BTW, his team is 1-6... about to be 1-7 because he has half his team on bye and they are all starting..... :fishing: :lmao:

Thanks

Just keep him out of the league next year. He paid his money, he can do what he wants really, unless league rules stipulate differently. Is the guy a jerk? Yeah. Should he be back in the league next year? No.

Unfortunately, at this point you might just have to leave the team alone, if anyone has already benefitted from this owner's unattentiveness.

Imagine you are playing him this week and the Commish comes in and sets a lineup after his half-empty lineup gave a team a win last week.

It sucks, but it really is a no-win situation.

I say just let things ride and boot the guy after the season... not that it should be a problem, because the guy seems to have checked out anyway.

Unless you are going to go in and retroactively reset his lineup for the other games where he played bye week players, you can't do anything. Otherwise you unbalance the league by only doing it for his future opponents, which isn't fair to those that didn't already got the easy win.

What means "reapidly?"

Repeatedly?

If it's that bad, kick the guy out of the league and get another owner to run the team or have the other owners run his team. Or disband his team and give the owners that have played him and would play him a bye....Oh, and put a boot in his ### for wrecking your league...

We have a solution that works fairly well in our league, although at a $10 entry it likely will not fly.

We require that the lowest point total for each week scribe an entertaining and informative recap of the previous week's games. If it is not funny, the writer gets assaulted with emails hazing them for being pathetic. If the recap-writing team fails to write their recap, we fine them $50. Either punishment is a suitable deterrant from mailing it in at the end. Nobody wants to spend an hour writing a recap, but paying $50 is not a good alternative either. Sometimes, the Sunday and Monday night games not only decide who wins ands loses each week, but also who will have to be the recap-writer. Keeps it pretty intense for everyone.

It is one of our league's best rules IMO. Keeps everyone involved every week, and keeps us all entertained each week with what is almost always a hysterical recap of the previous week's games, providing essentially a license for smack talk, hazing, and self-loathing.

The last place team has to buy lunch for the league at the end of the season. That usually keeps people interested.

:goodposting: I'm suggesting this to my league for next year......What about levying a $5 fine to the guy just on general principle. Let him know he's messing up.

No, never, absolutely not, don't even go there, not allowed, you will be sorry.

sounds like a scoring loophole. I know a guy that's in a league where def teams are played which start at 0 and can only lose points based on what the opposing team accomplishes against them. IMO those are dumb scoring setups and I say props to the guy for figuring out a loophole. If a commish(s) is dumb enough to not have these issues figured out beforehand the "offender" shouldnt be penalized since the rules technically had not been broken. pretty sure this is a def team scoring issue here also and this is exactly why it is not a good idea.

i would let all owners know they will not be invited back next year if they do not manage their team all year. besides that, there is nothing else you can do.

You should just make a rule that forbids owners from setting their own line-ups and allows the commissioner to do it for them. That way you will never run into these kinds of problems. Allowing the owners to run their own teams only leads to heartache.

Next year you can avoid another set of problems by drafting for them.

<end_sarcasm>

Find better owners, but if you take any action other than e-mail now you are giving an unfair advantage to those who beat him early in the season.

It sounds like this is a new league. If so don't worry about it, you will go through a few owners like this as you build up a decent group. In the off-season try to up the money. More $$ equals more intrest, and gets you more die hard managers.

some interesting replies.... Thanks for all the input. I have already decided that this guy is not coming back next year and have some interest from some other individuals that hint that they would take his spot. As for fines, those aren't really that realistic. First, its only a $10 league, but also there is no way to enforce getting his money. Its not like I can garnish his wages....

Also, as someone pointed out, there is sometimes a strategy to starting a player on bye. I am actually doing this myself in the same league with my TE. I have Witten and there is no way I was going to drop anyone on my team so I can get 2-3 points. I also let other teams in the league know I was doing that on purpose. This guy is starting RB,WR,TE,PK on bye this week.

As some of you have pointed out, I think my only option is going to be just let it ride out and some guys will get lucky with an easy win, while others may actually have to play his team and get a loss. I do kind of like the idea of going back and just giving everyone a win against him to really make him "Team BYE" but I don't think the league would really go for that.
