DeAngelo Williams & Jonathan Stewart, RBs, Carolina Panthers (1 Viewer)

So what's up with Williams? Waivers run tonight, guessing he isn't moving.
He’s due about $3M for the rest of the season.CAR would take a $10M cap hit next year if he is traded now. If they just release him next June the cap hit would be about $3M next year and $6M in 2014.He is not going anywhere IMO
Why? They have to take a cap hit - due to salary or acceleration of signing bonus - pretty much either way. Additionally, this team blows right now....so what exactly is the downside of taking the cap hit sooner than later?

I believe these rough numbers are generally correct. The Panthers are currently expecting to take a cap hit of $8.45M for Williams this season ($3.2M prorated signing bonus + $5.25M salary). If they trade him today, they drop $2.95M of the salary off their cap, since it will be paid by the team that trades for him. But they add another $9.6M to this year's cap for the remaining prorated amount of his signing bonus. So their total cap hit for Williams for this year would increase to about $15.1M, roughly $6.6M more than his current cap hit for this year.If they have the cap room and intend to trade him in the offseason anyway, I agree there is not necessarily a great reason to wait due to the cap; in fact, there is an incentive to do it now and go ahead and take the cap hit in 2012, so they are free and clear in 2013 and beyond. Then it presumably becomes a question of whether or not they get a quality offer.

Gotta look at him this weekend. I hate to even focus on some of the reasons he might be a strong play. But on the surface JStew didn't take the trip. Is 80 yards and a TD really too much to hope for?

Surprised they haven't IR'd Stewart already.

Still not sure Williams would be a good play. Wouldn't be surprised if Tolbert/someone else ended up playing ahead of him (given he's not returning to Panthers next year and they've got nothing to play for)

I'm thinking in light of the tragic events in KC, Deangelo Williams is going to produce some surprisingly good stats, and I'm thinking he's a good bet for a long score tommorow. All Panthers should do well. KC, especially the defense has a lot on their minds. May be just a one week thing for Williams, but starting with confidence. At least that's my hokey theory.

Is it time to consider rolling DWill out this weekend? Not a great matchup @ SD but he's getting most of the RB touches with JStew still on the mend. Need a potential plug-in for Bradshaw and have the LeShoure/Bell mind####, Ballard, and DWill on the bench. I love his week 16 matchup vs OAK, but SD has been pretty tough on RB's this season. DWill took a short toss from Cam 56 yds to the house on Sunday but other than that was fairly pedestrian vs ATL (17/56). What say ye?

BTW, any homers or oweners have word on JStew's HAS? Is he expected back anytime soon?

Heard a report saying JSTEW not expected back this week but that was yesterday....lot of time between then and the game. I think Ballard actually looks like a good play from that bunch and, no, I'm not planning to start DWIL if I have him.

Thanks. Not sure I'm ready to roll the dice on my semi-final game on Ballard as my RB2 vs a tough HOU run D in Texas. Although I agree with you that among the bunch I have to choose from, Ballard is at least as compelling (or not) as the rest. Ughh...
