DEEP WR GEMS (1 Viewer)

The Hank

Footballguy
I've been perusing my WW recently, in search of a final WR roster spot, and found some interesting characters that may be decent bye-week plug ins. Feel free to offer your own analysis/other WRs. Here are my own thoughts:

*NOTE I AM IN A 16 TEAM LEAGUE SO THE WELL IS DRY!*

-------------------------------------

Sam Hurd (DAL) -- I have been looking around the FBG universe and havent heard any news on the guy in a while. I may be wrong, but he could turn out to be the #3 WR for DAL. Hurd may be good for the occasionaly 35-50 yds a game with a TD thrown in every now and then.

Hank's Hunch: 33 rec, 401 yds, 3 TDs

Rashied Davis (CHI) -- Is it a pre-season tease, or is there some excellent rapport with Orton and Davis? Forget about games with Davis catching 2 TDs w/ 50+ yds. I think its more realistic for Davis to be the slot guy who makes the 7 yd slant receptions with the possible long yardage strike once every couple of games.

Hank's Hunch: 40 rec, 449, 4 TDs

Jeff Webb (KC): -- KC's Passing game is awful, we all know this. But as a #2 WR, it always intrigues the possiblity of the stars aligning just right and Croyle having a couple decent starts, in which case Webb is bound to have some leftovers of the Bowe and Croyle fantasy cookout.

Hank's Hunch: 32 rec, 375 yds, 2 TDs

Steve Breaston (ARI): -- Matt Leinart's 24 yd, 3 INT performance is just what the doctor ordered. Well maybe the local delicatessan. Leinart's pitifulness and ineptitude has most likely opened the door for Warner to reclaim the starting QB position, and the only possiblity of Breaston pulling together a decent haul. Boldin and Fitz are going to catch 95% of the passes, but if one were to go down, Breaston would be one of the first to benefit. Coupled with the fact that Breaston has a chance to be the KR for ARI allows for the possiblity of the random KR/PR TD. Warner is blessed with the ability to throw a football to a baker's dozen worth of WR. Lets hope that Warner doesnt get hurt.

Hank's Hunch: -- 48 rec, 502 yds, 5 TDs (1 KR TD)

Others to monitor:

Antonio Chatman (CIN) -- Lets see how long C.Henry can resist getting drunk and arrested before we annoint him #3 WR again.

Josh Morgan (SF) -- With the possiblity to become #3-4 WR in Martz' system allows you to become an instant fantasy consideration

Keenan Burton (STL) -- Burton will most likely start out as the #4 WR, with the possiblity to climb up the ladder with D. Bennett to be overtaken at some point during the season

Aundrae Allison (MIN) -- It's only a matter of time before Allison takes over the #3 WR spot over B. Wade.

Ben Obomanu (SEA) -- It's mandatory that in Seattle you must first pass a physical to see if you have been injured in the past, or are injury prone. If you have been, you will make the team. Obomanu has a chance to be thrown into the starting rotation if any combination of the wide recievers (Branch,Engram,Burleson) are injured.

David Clowney (NYJ)

Jordan Kent (SEA)

Robert Meachem (NO)

Devard Darling (KC)

Nate Washington (PIT)

Josh Reed (BUF)

bump

According to some Depth Charts and Shark Pool Banter, here are some names to keep in mind for this week, and for the forseeable future.

Devard Darling (KC) -- According to KC's depth chart, Darling is the #2 man. Granted Croyle isnt a world beater at QB, and Darling is #3 for looks (Bowe and Gonzo should be #1,2 in that department), Darling may be a good bye week fill-in down the stretch.

WATCH OUT FOR: J. Webb, W. Franklin

Antonio Bryant (TB) -- He's baack... again... any way, the former Pitt standout is tentatively the #2 WR in TB according to our thread discussing the subject. Bryant is certainly worth a roster spot, with the upside to put up some decent numbers in that west coast offense.

WATCH OUT FOR: I. Hilliard, M. Clayton

Isaiah Stanback (DAL) -- With Sam Hurd out for the meanwhile, look for Stanback to assume the #3 WR position in the DAL offense. If you WRs are low, or are in a deep league and looking for WR depth. Stanback could catch a random long pass in the slot.

WATCH OUT FOR: S. Hurd to get healthy

OTHER WR NAMES: K. Burton (STL), R. Davis (CHI), J. McCareins (TEN), L. Payne (SEA), M. Jenkins (ATL), J. Kent (SEA), D. Baker (PIT), J. Higgins (OAK), B. Lloyd (CHI), J. Simpson (CIN), C. Jackson (FA)

The Brady injury is bull.

Brady said he could have played in any of the preseason games but the team didnt want to put him on the field.

He said if thats the way the team wants to do things, he's okay with that. He'll get his "rep's" the first drive or two when it counts. But Gaffney isnt available in my 16 team leagues.

On the other hand...

With the tenderness of he wideouts and effectiveness of the Bengal passing game, Jerome Simpson could keep the #3 spot and produce. He is talented and if he gets open, Palmer wil find him and use him.

And the guy I would keep a serious eye on, is Brad Smith of the Jets. A similar situation as Simpson. Coles is hurt/tender and Smith is 6'2" with 4.45 speed and a quarterbacks understanding. Favre used him in his preseason week3 (play for real) start for the Jets on 1st, 3rd and 4th down, all resulting in first downs. Also, he started with Cotchery week 2 with Coles inactive.

Hagan practiced with the second unit on Wednesday. It is unclear what this means for the season opener, but it is an abrupt change. Meanwhile, the Dolphins also added WR Anthony Armstrong and OLB Rob Ninkovich to the practice squad. Armstrong and Ninkovich complete the Dolphins eight-man practice squad.

Deion Branch if he is available... went undrafted in a 12-team 16 rounder due to his injury, but by midseason he should be on a roster...

Yeah, he's not available in any of mine...but that's my fault. I targeted him in every league I'm in. I really think he is the "new" guy this year that consistently gets his 10-12 pts per week or thereabouts. But that doesn't mean that he's being drafted in every league of course. I'm just very high on him as were many of my leaguemates and as such I had to reach for him once or twice.

so, does that mean that Jabar Gaffney isn't available?
Nope, but he is good to put on the radar as well, should see alot of looks in that offense, I'd temper his expectations a little bit though with Brady until his foot heals more.
well, consider that Gaffney plays every WR position. He's efficient and accountable even if unspectacular in a sense.

And consider that Welker has already suffered a rib injury in pre-season and Moss, despite his massive workload and durability last year, is still a player with some years and hammy tweaks in his makeup.

And finally, consider that NE spent 60% of their plays in a 3WR sets last year. Even if both Moss and Welker remain unscathed, Gaf will be on the field a lot.

yeah, I'm a Pats homer. But I try to stay pretty realistic about them. While I would never advise anyone to draft Maroney, I would advise a guy scraping the barrel for WRs in a 16 team league to stash away Gaf.

good luck.

Note sure if he's a deep enough sleeper, but he went undrafted in some league I've seen, I'm talking about Mark Clayton. He was really hyped lasy year and then had his season washed away by injuries and a poor team. Baltimore should be improved this year with Cameron running the O so maybe Clayton could be a solid 4th WR.

This is very good.. if i remember right Pasquino pimped this selection in another thread. Basically said throw out 2007 as he was injured.

Another guy who is going real late would could be a WR3 in many leagues is Ronald Curry. Somebody's gotta catch the ball in Oakland and I for one don't think it will be Walker. Curry has always looked good when healthy although he has been almost like the WR equivalent of Chris Perry. Good guy to nab as a WR5 and get semi-startable numbers.

In order, with an attempted one word description on why:

1. Breaston - Checkdown

2. Davis - Competition?

3. Morgan - Benefactor

4. Meachem - Breezy

5. Clowney - Overlooked

1. Breaston agreed but he was drafted most my leagues and none are 16 teams!2. Davis A god one except the 4th option in the Bear OFFENSE DOESN;T WORK FOR ME! I picked him up waivers tonight and on second thought immediatly dumped him for Baskett! I picked him up thinking he was Ortins one target! Which leads to Baskett vs Jackson, everyone is high on Jackson but Baskett got the job. Jackson got the return job! Morgon and Meachum was drafted long before Breaston. Doubt they will be on any 16 team league waivers.Clowny is a good one but he's injured. Here is a good one for you. I saw Hurd discussed. Austin Miles. he was well ahead of Hurd when he got injured and will be back before Hurd I think. Or around same time! Could be huge in that Cowboy offense with all the attention on T.O. Whitten, and Barber.

excellent topic, as I'm always scrounging at that position (albeit in a 12 team league) -- but let me ask you this:

do you use a wr/te flex?

because maybe some te's would outproduce the above listed guys in spot starts.

I think in a situation like this you really need to wait on injuries to produce value.

assuming that well really is dry.

if you get return yardage, I'm assuming guys like breaston and cribbs are already gone in 16 teamers.

by the way, davis IS the slot guy for the bears, if it isn't common knowledge already.

could you maybe squeeze some blood out of that san fran turnip?

Taylor and Bryant skyrocketed up the adp last two or three weeks. They were all gone by round 15. I noticed Bryants play the second and third preseason game and immediatly put him on my list and he was gone long before I had a chance to draft him. So was Taylor! So I doubt they will be on any 16 team waivers as mine are 12 and 14 team leagues and they are not available any of my leagues.

Miles, Hurd, Cloney, Smith are best bets to be on a 16 team waiver. Carmillo of Miami is an excellent one. I never saw him drafted and no one even picked him up tonight my several leagues of waivers. Rashad Davis maybe a good one? He seemed to be Ortins favorite target pre season but I have to see it in a real game to beleive it.

Kevin Curtis and Bobby Engram were both available at the end of my auction draft for $1, as the 69th and 70th WR taken. With their injuries, they're off the radar of many, but if you can wait a few weeks, these guys should be solid WR's for most of the bye weeks into the late season, just when you'd need them. I think they're a better value than other WR's you can get that late.

David Anderson WR Houston TexansJust remember that name. If you dont know who he is you should find out.
:bs: can you explain this one? i'm in colorado, and not much of a college football fan... is this DA ahead of Jacoby in HOU? possible slot guy w/ AJ and Walter?
I dont know how he will be used with Davis healthy(although I dont think davis will play the slot) but DA will get a shot at the slot position. Yes he is ahead of Jacoby Jones. And if something were to happen to AJ or Walter, David Anderson is gonna be a PPR beast. Just think of him like this- He is everything Wes Walker is, but 2 inches taller with 4.4 speed. He's always were he is supposed to be on the field and catches everything. Also the NFL is a copy cat league and seeing how effective Wellker was last year the Texans would be silly not to try to use him in somewhat the same way. Healthy AJ+Walter= 2-3 catches/gameUnhealthy AJ or Walter = 6-7catches/game easily

I'm reviewing the WW before it processes late tonight, thinking about guys who could help my squad. We start 3 WRs with .5ppr. Return yardage counts 1pt per 25yds.

I have Colston, Marshall, and Holmes as my starters with Vincent Jackson and Arnaz Battle providing the depth. Steve Breaston is available. Would I be better off with him or Arnaz Battle?

Breaston looks like a depth / insurance guy in case Fitz or Boldin get hurt. Though he did technically out perform Fitz last week. Battle had 1 catch for 16 yds and JT looked OK, but was 14 / 20 (low pass attempts, especially for a Martz offense).I'm looking @ dropping L Robinson for Breaston in a 14 team dynasty b/c he looks like he'll be on the field more and involved. Especailly w/ Warner starting and getting less of the defense's attention. Bye week #3 wr material w/ some upside.

Since he will be deep on your bench, i'd go with Breaston. If AB or Fitz gets hurt, Warner seemed to have a nice connection with Breaston.

This probably deserves to be in the other forum, but I just saw that someone dropped Kevin Walter in my league. Is he a no-brainer pick-up? My receivers are Fitz, Housh, Driver, A Gonzalez, Engram, and Bruce. No PPR 1 point = 10 yds.

YES. He'll be a decent play all year. Consistant.
